      Michael Parsons Remember to be realistic - you will need to put in a bit of work whichever method you use for learning sax I have spent months researching into different systems and found a great resource at Takiras music method (check it out on google

    Was the most effective instruction i've ever received on an online source. I'm 17 and have been playing the saxaphone for one day :) The growl is much revered by begginer sax players particulary and its nice to see a video of someone who knows exactly what they're talking about with personality chucked in :) Keep posting these, although i'm new I know the difference between a begginer and proffessional tone and you're clearly very experienced, Thanks again

    1/2 I'm glad you found the growling video useful! If you are able to growl in the low to mid range then it’s only a short matter of time and practice before you are starting to hit the high notes with a good rasping growl. I would definitely go upwards one note at a time so for example if you can growl up to top G the try and nail G# and A next.

    Finding it hard to learn to growl, I play well but just can't seem to do it, blowing & growling at same time I just don't get. Any advice because its really annoying me.

    Hi there, Thanks for your comments on the growling video. Glad it's worked for you. the book I was referring to is called "Learn to Play Rhythm 'n' Blues Saxophone" by Mark "Deke" McGee. It's published by Jazzwise Publications Ltd, ISBN 978-1-906458-00-3. It's an excellent book with CD accompaniment and I highly recommend it for not only growling but many of the other "tricks" of the trade. Good luck.

    Don’t strangle the notes by closing up your throat & don’t worry if the growl “note” you hear in your head is far lower than the notes your playing. Sometimes it helps if you get a tiny bit more aggressive with your approach & really will the notes out sounding as you want them, remember once you crack this it’s just like riding the proverbial bike.you won’t ever forget how. Good luck & keep listening to the Clarence Clemmons/Junior Walkers/A C Reid's of this world to try to emulate their sound

    Quite a few of the commenters here say they can't do the growling sound with an alto sax. I tried today with my own alto and if I tried "humming" I also couldn't. But if I tried actually "growling" it was possible, but I had to play louder. And at first, as Graeme says, it was hard for my throat. It is getting easier, though. Practise....

    Ok I need some advice! I'm 17 and I have a saxophone collecting dust in the cupboard. I stopped taking lessons years ago because I wasn't enjoying the bog basics every week, playing tunes like coming round the mountain and oh when the saints. I learned how to simply play the notes. Now, years later I found my love for the sax and I wanna take it up again. Is it worth taking lessons again or work off these videos??

    great video! i was wondering if there was a difference in growling on a jazz mouthpiece vs growling on a classical mouthpiece. Is it easier to achieve the growl on a jazz? I'd like to be able to growl for my solos in my highschool jazz band. but i'm currently looking for a jazz mouthpiece and playing on a classical mouthpiece. Let me know! thanks

    • @zombieman2122
      @zombieman2122 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much easier to growl on a Jazz Mouthpiece. Growling is a technique expressed mostly in your Jazz, Blues, Rock and Roll and Pop. Classical Growling is not something you here much of, in fact my teacher's scolded me before for accidentally growling in a classical piece ;)
      Definitely much easier on a Jazz mouthpiece. And from personal experience I've found the wider chamber mouthpieces make it much easier too. Could barely growl when I used a 4C/5C and now that i have a 6C it sounds a lot more professional and is easier to project.
      I use a Meyer 6C Alto Sax Mouthpiece, I reckon you can buy em for about $160 online. Not the most expensive but it does the job well if you're looking for something around that range. Hope that helped :)

      I didn't get it until my 4th year playing. Just hum while playing and use A LOT of air. Getting out the first growling sound will make it easier cause you will get a feel for it.

    Hi :) I was wondering if It's harder to growl on an ebonite mouthpiece or an alto saxophone? Does it sound better with a metal mouthpiece? I do have a Berg Larsen metal mouthpiece for my Selmer Tenor, but only ebonite for my Selmer Alto :/

    Hi I've been playing the tenor sax for three years and I was wondering how to make it easier to play on a size three mouthpiece. My band teacher have been getting on my case because I play on a two and a half. Any ideas on how to make it easier. When I play on one my sound sounds really airy but on the two and a half I sound bright

    I can't do the huming growl good just flutter toungue can you help out I play alto in january I'm doing tenor and I can't get out the last note of the jazz scale also sometimes if I go lower than a E it gets high

    • @MrSKaTeR0709
      @MrSKaTeR0709 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I'm 13 and play tenor. Getting low notes is hard to do. But I've been practicing my jazz scale in the lowest octave so I can get those low notes out. I use the humming technique and that really works for me. But just try to blow faster air throw your horn. It's hard to keep the growl. But if you want to practice growling on lower notes, then just play your scales in the lowest octave. But you will get the hang of it. In pretty good at growling now. I think it just takes practice.

    • @alexovenden8698

      Learn how to play your sax to at least a basic level before you join your schools jazz band. And learn to read music. And practise as much as you can.
      This is a basic reply for someone who says they "just started playing" and doesn't seem to have figured it out by themself.

    Is that a DV you're playing on?

    • @thesaxteacher
      @thesaxteacher  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Austin, not sure what your meaning by DV? probably make of sax or mouthpiece? The sax is an ANDY SHEPPARD Autograph tenor. This is a limited edition (100 only) sax made especially for Andy Sheppard to his exact design. It's totally unlaquered on purpose so it looks old but was made around March 2012. Check them out on line, I'm really lucky to play on this horn and know Andy well, it only took 24 years to get me away from the black Keilwerth SX90R you see me playing in earlier videos on this site. The mouthpiece is a Theo Wanne Durga 8* although I have recently moved onto a custom made MORGAN FRY solid silver mouthpiece that I feel compliments the AS tenor even more. Hope that helps...if not message me again...Cheers...G

      mysteriousman1 I'm no expert but my biggest advice is that it comes with time. Once you get it it will be natural, but you just have to learn how you need to tighten or loosen your throat and embochure to get both the required air support and the throat growl
