    I can't thank you enough for breaking this down. I've played for years, and always assumed that this technique, was reserved for the jazz legends, and not mere mortals. I can't wait to try it out. Your the best for doing this!

      +terrill13 Thanks for the kind comment! Delighted to have helped. If there are any other techniques which you want to know more about then do let me know. I'm thinking I ought to do one on note 'bending' in the new year. You may want to watch my video on vibrato or my videos on altissimo in the meantime. Thanks for your support.

    I bought my alto sax 2 days ago subbed to your channel same day and growled today. I found the second method best. I couldn't hum and blow at the same time.So it worked for me, I'll definitely invest more time into this. Thanks a lot!Chez

    Thanks Chez. Not just for this vid but for a whole bunch of your beginner guides. I'm 57yo and now 8 weeks into learning my first ever instrument. It also helps that my Missus plays clarinet and alto... but now I've got my very own tenor 8-)
    Give me a shout if you're ever playing a gig near Bribane. Be Happy!

    That trill or flutter tongue was the way I first got the growl too. I had the problem of not actually having any mentor or teacher after I got out of high school. And no primary sax player ever. So I had to learn everything pretty much on my own. I did get to go to a few clinics. One with Chris Vadala, years ago. He was with Chuck Mangione, and I think he is teaching at New York University or something. And another memorable clinic was with the saxophone section before a concert by Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd. There were about 25 of us sax players , and the musicians from the band took a few of us into separate rooms and taught us for about an hour. Just so fantastic to get to pick those guys brains, when we were just high school kids then.

      Sounds like a great experience! It's tough to maintain motivation without a tutor but sounds like you've had some good points of reference. Do you set yourself goals as well in order to keep practicing? Cx

    Flutter-tongue can be done 2 ways, actually. The other one involves reverberating the back of the throat. It's a lot more taxing on the vocal chords but might be easier for people who can't roll their R's. It's also a lot closer to growling in terms of sound.

    God that tenor saxophone of yours is beautiful miss Chez babe. I don’t see much damage to the bell of it at all. I’ve loved and liked the sound of the tenor saxophone ever since I saw other women and especially for the first time since I watched on a VCR tape Mel Collins of Dire Straits playing it during their Alchemy tour in 1984 on the song “two young lovers” I know I’ve wanted to try out or sample playing the tenor sax but I don’t have any experience or practice playing it. Still I’ve always wanted to go and visit a recording studio and watch how other women play the saxophone to make their own songs or music. I don’t know how to growl on the saxophone but at least this video of yours helped me learn it. Keep up the good work Chez dearest. Jason.

    excellent tutorial Chez.. :) this may make you smile.. just over a year ago I got my first sax.. an Alto..Then when it arrived I went out out to the local jam night and played it.. I'd watched some videos on YT on how the play the basics and I learnt a scale too..Then went out and played with people. They asked how long I'd played for.. I replied with "just a day" .. They couldn't believe it lol..I was able to play clear notes and was in the right key too ..

    Thanks for explaining Growling so well. I think your video has made a lot more sense than some other ones online Chez. Definitely going to try out the technique tomorrow (it's past midnight so won't crack the sax out tonight!). A separate question, when using flutter tongue, as you're concentrating on the technique I'm presuming you can't tongue articulate the notes therefore to practice would I approach it as if playing slurs. Is that right? Thanks.

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brian M Exactly right brian. I should have flagged this. Once your tongue is in motion for flutter tonguing you can't articulate. Have you come across any videos where I have explained my "click" fingering articulation? If not, I'll do a video on this soon! Thanks for watching and so glad the video was useful! Cx

    I've managed to growl using flutter tongue for most of the range, *and* using the hum. However, my vocal range isn't that great, and I can't hum high notes on the Alto. How do you hum-growl the high notes? An octave down hum doesn't seem to sound right. Thanks!

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Boeck Glad you've managed master the effect! To be honest, I don't think it matters too much which pitch you go for so long as you get that collision in the sound waves which cause the juttered 'growl' sound. Whilst you can hear the hum pitch, unless someone is up close, they should just hear the effect it has on the sax rather than you. Try recording with mic at the bell of the sax to see if you agree. Cxxx

    Hello and thank you for your great videos ! Really nice and easy to understand even for a french guy (sometimes you speak really quickly bu it helps me improve my understanding ;) ). I have a question about humming : is it normal for a person standing next to me to hear my voice when I am "growling" ? Thank you in advance and thanks again for your work !

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well hello France! So thrilled to have reached beyond the language barrier. Really good to hear from you Kevin! Ideally, when humming for growling, you pick a note which resonates well (ie interacts with the sax note for maximum effect on the growl) but harmonises well so goes undetected. Close mic positions can also be a problem for picking up the hum. Try pitching the note as usual, then Hum an 8ve or 5th above. Use this for the growl & see if it becomes more discrete for you. I'm in France again for a gig next month. I shall wave to you! 😉

    • @cheztaylorsax

      I guess your tongue must be pretty far back to growl. How about starting the note with a tongue & a full tone then going into a growl? Or trying a 'k' tongue instead? th-cam.com/video/JLyeujvU4Jo/w-d-xo.html

    A pretty woman and a nice set of pretty saxophones. Tenor and alto, my favorites too. Can’t wait to see and hear more sax music from you Miss Taylor. Maybe you’ll be on tour someday and come to my hometown of Saint Louis Missouri. Then we can visit and so on. ❤️ ya!

      You are a looser with a capital "L"......why even bother with a stupid comment ....move on dipshit....Chez is a beautiful ,talented , kind and thoughtful person that gives up her time to offer advice/ tips to keen players , why not just admire her beauty and enjoy her engaging personality.....that is if you know what one is?.....you obviously had a bypass operation on yours.........

    Goes to show that anyone can put up an instructional video and get views. Top professionals in the field are charging $60 an hour for skype lessons......... Maybe let that soak in a little......

      seanwinter sax hey Sean. I presume from your firm comment that you are a pro player yourself? Is there somewhere sax players who follow this channel can see/hear you play? Always great to have a pool of influences. All the best to you. Stay happy, life’s short. Chez

      It's great you're giving tips for beginners. But it's very obvious this is a concept you have just a rudimentary understanding of. No talk about what the interval you are humming is and what that effect has on the notches that are created in the growl. The closer you hum to the the original note the wider the notches are. The further away the smaller they get.
      Tim Price charges $60 an hour for skype lessons. And he has numerous books published by Hal Leonard.
      Literally click on my name and you can hear my playing. I am a professional player but I don't claim to be better than I am.

      seanwinter sax Hope you find other videos online which are more your vibe. I enjoy teaching via TH-cam. I try to make fun and engaging videos which summarise ideas and concepts for anyone who’s interested in watching / listening. I value the comments and take them to heart. After a decade playing sax professionally, I’m now seemingly in demand & I’m really grateful to enjoy my pocket of the industry. I’m booked abroad at least twice every month so I get to see the world+ my career at home and away has lead me to a live a great lifestyle, drive a sporty car & own 2 properties in central London. I enjoy my saxophoning job but it’s not my world. Family and friends are. Please remember there’s a person at the end of your comments. Chez
