I just bought an ISBN from Bowker and wish I had seen this video first. Oops. Oh well. But I have to say, Derek is spot on with everything else that I've discovered on my own like great cover art on Fiverr. Great job, Derek.
Very informative!! I wish I had come across this video Before I went with a self-publishing company where I agreed to giving them(I didn't read the contract thoroughly) 85%; now I can say, hindsight. Now I have a new version of my book but am struggling as to how to not make the same mistakes as with the first one.

🙏🙏Thank you for helping us...thank you for helping me. I've published 7 books so far. I'm making more. I love to write. Learning how to do all of this stuff is confusing....the business aspect not writing the book. However, you've explained this stuff out quite well for me to slowly digest. Compression game on slow here for me more often than not. I get totally discouraged during the process of trying to understand the whole ISBN thing but i keep going.

It's either ISBN codes or rent.....I pick paying rent Everytime😯😰😭😭😭😭😰...thank God for Create Space, LuLu and so on and for now this #wonderful video and that ISBN website he shared with us. The struggle is real.....if it wasn't for the internet I'd be six feet under as the love and support and answers I've gotten over time from this platform has saved my life. 😭😭😭😭THANK GOD FOR MY HUSBAND AND THE DANG INTERNET.... Sorry to bother you but do you recommend doing the price in your barcode or not?
Probably yes - most book stores won't take a book without a price in the barcode. I don't try to sell in bookstores so I don't bother. If I did more events though, I'd price high so I can "discount" at events, like $19.99 on the cover but $10 in person, "1/2 off deal."

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of buying 1,000 ISBNs and then sell them at a discount to indie authors. Do you think that is a viable business idea?
does the barcode maker you have on your site still meet the "standards" that stores require?
I think so - there are barcode scanners you can download to your smartphone... if you make a barcode you should be able to scan your screen and it will read it.
I'm self published and I just purchased 10 ISBNs from Bowker. I originally used the free ISBN that CS provided. I would like to republish my book using my own ISBN and it's asking for an "Imprint Name" ("the publisher assigned to your ISBN is your imprint."). I'm not working with a publisher so who should I list as my imprint name?
Just create a name as the imprint ---I just used my last name and used "Right House Publishing" or Emma Right" as my imprint. If you have a formal company use that name.

While I'd love to get my own free ISBN here in Canada, which is free as it is, it seems a bit complicated as is the process of getting the copyright. Said copyright is only $50-65 as well, which sounds reasonable to me. I think I'm going to skip that, just focus on getting a good book cover, then leave CreateSpace to take care of the rest. I just hope that in getting the ISBN through them, which I think is an American company, that it won't mean that my book was written 'in America' or anything like that. It's written in Canada by a Canadian; no Americans involved in the process of writing, editing, nor cover designing because I'm pretty certain the graphic designer I'm communicating with is Canadian as well. I'm a pretty patriotic person.
Hey Derek. Ive gotten a lot from watching your videos. At 3:30 you talk about the difference between a createspace or a bouker barcode. I am printing with createspace, so Im not bothering with bouker for all the reasons you talk about. Question. If magically I do get a gig with a traditional publisher to go into book stores, theoretically, can I not change the barcode later to another publisher?
Side note - possible to have two ISBNs? One for CreateSpace and another with the new publisher?
I am getting ready to publish my first book. So, I shou'dn't worry so much about designing my cover and printing my hardcopies as much as I should getting a ood cover design for online sales? I am lost as to where to start with this. As of now, all I have is a completed Triology. I was going to first pay an editor to reedit my book, and then worry about interior formating for both online and hardcopying and then the cover. Is there anything I'm missing? I kinda don't get that logo thing you're referring to. Not that advanced in what I know about publishing yet. But, am I on the right track?
Thanks for the helpful video. For Lightning Source/ IngramSpark, it seems to require your own publishing company/ imprint in order to upload and produce your book. For other printing presses they sometimes require that as well. Isn't it better to create one in that case?
Also, if you are not based in the US, do you still need to purchase an ISBN from Bowker? If I bought from somewhere else, will my ISBN have the same recognition as a Bowker one, especially to be listed for bookstores globally?
If I used the free barcode that CreateSpace (or KDP now) generates, can I take that barcode and use it elsewhere (eg if I wanted to simultaneously upload my book to IngramSpark)? Or will that only work on Createspace/KDP?
Digital e-books really are the better way to start writing books.
At $25, Bowker seems to me like the obvious option for a print publisher.
Bowker isn't a publisher... they don't offer print on demand or books at all, as far as I'm aware; they offer ISBN registration, but charge a lot for that service.
@@DerekMurphycreativindie Thanks Derek. I actually meant that Bowker would be useful for a print publisher to use to obtain a barcode. Here in Canada we are lucky because the government makes ISBN numbers available at no charge to assist in developing a Canadian publishing industry. Small presses in Canada are also subsidized by our very generous governments (provided thy don't publish anything too politically incorrect).

So if I get a free ISBN from createspace and use your barcode generator how do you add it to the book in createspace?
You place your ISBN and barcode in the back cover. Check out how print books do it on Amazon. Also the Amazon Createspace has a template for a book cover and its suggested placing for these items. Finally if you use Fiverr --one of the cover designers--they will know where to place these--usually at the bottom.

Mr. k the "I" in ISBN stands for international so I would assume you can sell it anywhere
Hello Derek, I ordered a book online and when I received the book, I compared the ISBN and they dont match. Although I went to isbnsearch.org and it brought up the correct book. Advise.
So many middlemen.
We have to expect that these politically correct and consumer aware to check into these publishers name.
