Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.

Hey Mr. Murphy how much is your class? I am going to check your website here in a second but I think your class is probably what I need to take the next step- although I haven't put my main series up on KDP yet I want to know what to do to drive traffic in the first place. And sure I have learned some things from your channel but I feel I am missing huge things! Anyway I'm going to website right now plus I should definitely check out sumo for email lists.

You can giveaway teasers on instafreebie, or just publish a permafree book of a few sample chapters linking to the full one.

You just set the price to free on draft2digital or smashwords, then tell amazon to price match it to the ibooks or kobo page - when you stop offering it for free you tell amazon to set it to normal again.

Or do what I have done which is make pdfs of free chapters of my "Experts Catastrophe" and put them on a website - www.pseudoexpertise.com . Problem is that I am a "nobody" who no-one knows (for the very same scandalous reasons explained in the book) and no-one is "looking for" me. On the one hand even before finalising the book I have sold one copy to a friend of my mother and another copy to an aquaintance at the allotments. But that's unlikely to extend any wider (especially as I've not been able to get any reviews (rather than the few blurbs on my site). Most professional scientists are either (a) afraid to show support for my dangerously taboo material, or (b) sniffy about me not being one of their community of "proper" "experts".
My main hope is to get some mainstream media coverage of the various headline-meriting scandal contents, along with the quality hopefully selling itself in due course.

By the way, Derek's book covers are way beyond my own skill but then maybe my own self-made one could be out of his range too? I went to bookshops and sneakily substituted my books in the "nonfiction bestsellers" sections. It soon became obvious that my cover pseudoexpertise.com/ch-0-X.pdf was beating all those world-top professional ones!!!

I have to ask about the 200 downloads minimum a day on your permafree books. There has to be a reason those people are downloading it, because there are many permafree books where people aren't downloading them at all, they don't even know they exist. You must have a source of traffic in place, and so I'm curious about what that is, and if it's possible for a new author to have even remotely that level of success on free books.

I have good covers, decent even sales copy, and use keywords for visibility. When I started I needed to drive traffic, and I still use free book promo sites every once in a while to kickstart things. Now I can release a freebie quietly and it'll still do pretty well. This month I'm averaging 150 downloads a day.
