Practice tips for Vizzutti

  • Even visiting Mom, the practice continues! There are often passages, even in pieces I've played many times, that I have to treat like I'm learning for the first time when I "dust off" a piece like Allen Vizzutti’s "Cyclone" in preparation for the next performance (which is tonight in Norfolks with Terry Austin and the Virginia Wind Symphony; then at the VMEA Conference on Nov. 17).
Here is one such lick, starting in m. 270. For some reason it's always been easy for me to scuff. I change the articulation to slur-two-tongue-two with Allen's blessing. Even the day before and on the performance day, I'll methodically hit this lick at gradually faster tempos.
Then there's a big cadenza section near the end; I'm working on managing the changes in register and energy, from G#3 to B6 (which doesn't really come out here!), and then the dexterity required for the last section. I recently switched to a 1.5 B/C cup by Pickett Brass for the sake of sound quality, but I've not yet figured out how to manage the high register!
    And therefore...back to the shed...
