*Corrections/Mistakes* - I was very incorrect on total RAV sales. In 2020 the Toyota RAV4 reached it's 10 million unit milestone and they have sold millions more since then. I mistakenly misread a chart and read the US sales from 1 year and misinterpreted that as total global sales since inception. This misreading led to the next mistake. - BYD Song Plus in 2022 exceeded US Total Rav4 sales in 2022, not totally culminative sales. - I was incorrect in saying the RAV4 does not use electric motor and engine at the same time. It actually does at some faster highway speeds. - Toyota RAV4s battery is 1.8kWh, not 18.1kWh as stated. It is 244v x 7Ahr = approx. 1.8kWh
The RAV4 definitely has options for the Cruiser variant, with there being a $687 difference between white and the other colours available. I think this is a large oversight, since you listed the paint option for the BYD.
I went to a Toyota Store in China... it was a ghost town.... Then I went to BYD store... it was like the Melb Royal show... heaps of familys, trying out cars, sales person explaining features, makings deals. ballons, show bags. Very down to earth, I can see why BYD sales so many cars in China.

That chinese junk will be polluting earth on a dump in 3 or 4, IF it lasts that long.
A great video David. I think there is an important missed criteria in the comparison, and that is the passenger accommodation. The bigger dimensions of the Sealion 6 allows for a much more spacious cabin. Even though the RAV4 has more cargo space, the more spacious cabin is much more important on a day to day basis.
I could never buy the RAV4 because of its old technology drive train. It is the BYD for me but I’m biased because I have an Atto3 and a Seal Premium and love them both. BYD will improve service, parts and warranty over time. Toyota has also lost or missed the plot on EV’s. Great review btw. Please do more of them.

Honestly, RAV4 is so yesterday, manual seat, dull interior, dated infotainment...on the other hand, BYD is a contrast to RAV with its generous smart features, less fuel, fast pickup, spacious interior ..... I placed my ordder on BYD straightaway with no hesitation.

Bought the SL6 2WD why, interior passenger space and comfort, much quieter even in HEV mode. Use only in EV mode during the week. Something the RAV4 for sale in AU cannot do.
Why didn't you mention, BYD is PHEV. You can use it as ev for every day in day out from cheaper fuel (electric) cost. Free if you got solar. The Biggest Winning advantage is it can be novated leased with 100% Pre tax payment and GST free (Car cost and running cost). Also longevity, there is No transmission in it (you mentioned it). Cant wait for the Sealion 7. A Seal on stilts. Have a Seal Performance and traded a 21 330i in on it, couldn't beat the novated leasing benefits. Its not only well built, reliable, quiet, smooth, extremely roomy but fast. 0-100kmh with two passengers and a half full boot is a constant 3.8 seconds. Over and over. Cbarges fast at super fast chargers and easy to charge at home (1.2kw at home and free fast charging at work 7kw). If the Sealion 7 has the same drivetrain with 390kw, im sold. I said and always avoided Chinese made products but after a test drive in the Seal in April, we ordered it right away. Legacy automakers should be afraid, very afraid. 17k kms later and still loving it. Three things the 330i had that are missing on the Seal; a much better autonomous driving system, the roundel badge and driving dynamics. Everything else, it blows the BMW out of the water. It is faster than the i4 M50 for half the cost. That's value.
Very good comparison. Would you mind adding another category - driving dynamics? I have owned a 2014 Mazda CX-5 and after trying out other compact SUV's including the CX-50, I got a newer CX-5. Thanks!

You are correct and I will add a correction. I used their plug-in hybrid capacity by mistake. That and I haven't seen a real world electric only stat and didn't just want to go off manufacturer specs.

This video was aimed to be a sort of 'video brochure' of each car. Plenty of seasoned auto journalists that have driven both cars so wasn't something I was keen on doing as a newbie!
Very surprised by the lower boot space of the BYD... I am just starting to look at my next car, Tucson HEV AWD, BYD SL6, RAV4 AWD in that order, so in showroom will look closely at why the BYD is so much smaller. I am a firm believer in cabin width being very important for car comfort, however reviewers rarely discuss internal dimensions for comparisons.
It's hard discuss and measure interior dimensions because the lower half is generally wider than the top half. And the feeling of spaciousness can be compromised by how far the top half tapers inwards. Only real way to test if it is suitable is by sitting in the car yourself
I agree and I would say that Sealions battery pack offers more underbody protection than the RAV's open undercarrage. The Blade Battery is not just sitting there exposed, it is very very well protected and forms an integral part of the entire cars structure. Its called 'Cell to Body', where they integrate the battery pack into the body of the vehicle. I didn't mention the replacement cost either because battery replacement cost would be very reasonable when compared to the $10,000 cost to replace the Rav4s 1.8Kwh NiMH battery. The Sealions battery is 10x the capacity and uses more modern chemistry, using Toyotas pricing per kWh structure for their 1.8kWh NiMH battery that would mean the Sealions 18.1kWh battery would be $100,000 to replace.
Don’t like the RAV4 hybrid so it’s the Sealion 6 for me. Rented a RAV4 for a weekend,,and have test driven the BYD. Against this you have the XPeng G6 which I drove at the Melb EV show and prefer it suspension feel, self parking. So PHEV a Sealion 6, EV either the G6, Sealion 7 or an MG4 for an urban runabout or an XPower. Not a fan of either of the Teslas.
Nope on the Sealion 6, it’s not a satisfactory test drive or drive. Suspension too soft. Suspect the Sealion 7 could be the same. So it’s an MG4, XPower or G6.
Spare parts section is a null point for Australia as there are not any BYDs currently out or warranty and if you buy a new one with comprehensive insurance then you’re covered there as well.
Those RAV fuel economies are way out too. I’ve had mine for 18 months and have averaged 5.1 over that time. I can’t think of how anyone would get in the 6’s. There’s no doubt the RAV is an old platform but Toyota doing what Toyota does, strong, functional and reliability backed from great resale make it hard to pass.
I personally like the DMi better it allows me to drive like an electric car all the time. Not like Toyota hybrid you have to be gentle on the petal and keep the speed below 40km.
oh mate the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid doesn't have a 18.1KWH battery as you claim thats sold in Australia that size battery is on the Rav4 Prime thats sold in the USA and thats a plugin Hybrid not sold here in Australia
Resale value and reliability is an old thing. That is why you can see more for sale Toyota cars because after 2-3 years of using they already bored with their old fashioned Toyota cars.😅😅😅
My main concern is how the BYD drives!? I once rented a MG and I hated it, it lacked basic agronomics, had to keep my ankle tensioned up because the accelerometer height was too much. Plus I felt every pebble in the ground in my spine, add to that enormous road noise, plus out of control handling ! . It is never enough to compare between engines and efficiency and all that stuff, it is about the driving experience as a whole!!! Anyone knows anything about this?! Is BYD really better than RAV 4 ?! though I know Toyota are still using 1990s technologies and stingy in everything they do even with their designs

BYD just has introduced the Sealion 6 DM-i with a extrem low price for the base model: AUD 40,000 (THB 940,000). The RAV 4 is (unfortunately) not available in Thailand.
Even Toyota themselves is going to pay BYD and deploy DMi in the future, why get the failure technology now
DMİ nedir?
Great research and professional summary .. best I’ve seen (Atto 3 owner)
Thanks bud! Appreciate the feedback!
RAV4 advertises as a weekend away vehicle but doesn't have V2L so the BYD would be my choice.
BYD is way better
Thanks for this informative video. I need some advice, im torn between choosing this BYD U DMI vs the KGM Torres EVX. They are both the same price and both are fully loaded front wheel drive. Your thoughts?
In the Philippines, SL6 SRP is 40,940 AUD. While RAV 4 XLE HEV is 54500 AUD.
RAV 4 is too OP pre 😂
Your video is very professional for sealion 6 owners, we are the byd accessories shop, look forward to cooperate with you!
Great show, mate.
One pretty crucial comparison You didn't cover , the visual aspect , byd in the looks department Wins , front and back view are much more pleasing to have on yer drive. That's my take , so I individually asked the wife and the kids , they all liked the looks of the byd.
To be honest dad 4 was a handsome car 20 yrs ago , this present one is a pretty Zzzz box.
Meant rav 4 , pred text sucks
@@ellisrochlin2267dad4 😂 it still works don't change it

Another great video! Learnt alot
Thanks for sharing, very informative ❤
Thanks!
The ridiculously long waiting time of up to 24 months for a new RAV4 is the main con for me.
Most certainly buy a Sealion 6, more impressive improvements in 2025, when BYD starts offering such car in UK
BYD Is in a league of ita own. RAV 4 was an option when i checked the Tucson Full Hybrid. I of course opted for the beautiful Tucson... Soldi It Yesterday and Just purchased the BYD . No compatiscon in either aspects.
Good video indeed, However, It would have been more comparable if it was the RAV4 prime PHEV, which unfortunately was not marked for us. Thanks for your efforts!
Excellent review 🎉
@@ronmonzon216 Thanks mate! Much appreciated 🙏
Good job sir appreciated bud is more advantages my concern is after sale service being ofw I’m very aware anyway thank you so much very good presentation good bless
Safety, fuel efficiency and technology are my top priorities in that order.
In india, BYD is launching Emax 7, 7 seater ev at an economical rate of rs 30 lakhs.. Is it the same vehicle u r discribing at present.. Anyway appreciate the professional way of ur comparison 👍👍
@@joseukken8136 thank you for the kind words 🙏
No this is a different vehicle. The Sealion 6 is 5 seat SUV.
The BYD eMax 7 is known as the BYD M6 in other Asian markets, but it is not sold here in Australia.
How is the comfort of the sealion 06 compared to the rav4 though?
Waiting for 5th GEN DM-I BYD sealion to release. Hope 2025 can come to Australia market.
Do you have any news if BYD will release a PHEV equivalent for the DM-i 5th gen? I want that 2000 km 65L tank fuel efficiency. Could probably get to 2700km under the most ideal driving condition.
@@apeinto5637 in Chinese local market it just got released. But not sure when to Australia, I heard a guy from BYD, he said 'hopefully' to get it next year.
In Australia, RAV4 has 5 Badge trims (GX/GXL/XSE/Cruiser/EDGE) each of these have 4 combinations of Hybdrid or conventional engines with either a 2WD or AWD - so the total trims should be 20!!
Dream of BYD Sea Lion.
Owners of BYD Sealion, how is it in the mountains, and driving a loaded car (3-5 people) uphill? how is uphill overtaking? efficiency on inclined roads?
Great video with great detail. What do you drive?
My daily drive is a BYD Seal Premium
Does anyone have any concerns with having a hybrids like this and then having to maintain petrol and electric engines?
Still better than buying 1 pure ev and another gas car for long distance drives. A true 2 in 1.
How about a comparison between BYD Sealion 6 top spec and the new Hyundai Tucson1.6T HEV AWD.
I would never buy a Toyota again poor service backup & 3 goes at fixing the Prado. Generally they are overpriced & behind the times. I’d buy the BYD any day of the week
Nice video but you showed the Rav4 battery size as 18kw/h. It is 1.8kw/h. Also no mention of the EV only range and availability of charging port.
You are correct and I will add a correction. I used their plug-in hybrid capacity by mistake.
I didn't include electric only range as I figured buyers in this category would be more concerned with total range and real world figures. That and I haven't seen a real world electric only stat and didn't just want to go off manufacturer specs.
Could you please add a section towards the end of your video discussing the resale value of the product after five and ten years?
@@KitKat2Die4 anything I put up about resale would be just speculation for either car as neither have been around long enough. Would prefer to stay with stats that can be confirmed today.
I'd love to see a comparison between BYD Sealion 6 vs KIA EV5 top end models.
BYD is twice better than Toyota Rav4, unless you are brianless toyota funs, go and test drive them both, you will understand
Fans, you mean fans
Yes, I do think he means fans, specifically fans who have misplaced their Brians. Lol
Tow bar option on byd?
There are a few aftermarket options available
Great review but I would have liked to see build quality and driveability discussed...
I had a look at the CarsGuide review on YT. It has a boot capacity of 574L for the BYD, on a par with RAV4, but mentioned it does not have a spare.
Byd is much better looking
cool and professional!
Fam the rav4 does use both engines and motor generator 2 at the same time.
Yes that is correct and I stand corrected. I am adding that to my corrections
Battery protection from underbody impact is important in Australia. I don't recall Battery replacement cost being mentioned.
It's too bad that US consumers won't have the chance to decide for themselves. RIP.
Sounds like a dedicated toyota fan
BYD!!! 😊
Sealion 6 is getting a local suspension tune. Not sure when those updated SL6s will hit the market though.
I would buy both
Spare parts section is a null point for Australia as there are not any BYDs currently out or warranty and if you buy a new one with comprehensive insurance then you’re covered there as well.
toyota in china is for elders
Those RAV fuel economies are way out too. I’ve had mine for 18 months and have averaged 5.1 over that time. I can’t think of how anyone would get in the 6’s. There’s no doubt the RAV is an old platform but Toyota doing what Toyota does, strong, functional and reliability backed from great resale make it hard to pass.
And Toyota is going to use the BYD power train in the Future
I personally like the DMi better it allows me to drive like an electric car all the time. Not like Toyota hybrid you have to be gentle on the petal and keep the speed below 40km.
Toyota all day with resale and reliability
oh mate the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid doesn't have a 18.1KWH battery as you claim thats sold in Australia that size battery is on the Rav4 Prime thats sold in the USA and thats a plugin Hybrid not sold here in Australia
Cheers mate, all of those points were covered in the corrections/mistakes post in the pinned comment.
Some reviewers prefer the Outlander PHEV
7:05 engine and electric motor can work together if more torque is needed,. At all speed. Can run electric only at high cruising speed.
Yes that is correct. I added this to my corrections post a few days ago.
The engine shown on Rav4 is a Lexus, data has to be as accurate as possible, not pasting any clips.
It's the same A25A-FXS 2.5L engine. Just has a Lexus badge on it instead of Toyota.
Depreciation/resale is the big question.
Plus overall reliability. Another big question.
Can China build quality be trusted.
You're free to visit China so that you may know how they build quality and trusted mega structures.
Resale value and reliability is an old thing. That is why you can see more for sale Toyota cars because after 2-3 years of using they already bored with their old fashioned Toyota cars.😅😅😅
Understand the superiority of byd in terms of features. In aust rav4 buyer doesn’t give a wink on Chinese. Car.Toyota still has a big customer base.
For now.
That is really just a comment on the people who buy them.
