This week’s film breakdown analyzes the San Francisco 49ers' second year quarterback Trey Lance. Lance didn’t play much in his rookie year, just 2.5 games, so even though there isn't a big enough statistical sample size to give him a complete evaluation, the tape never lies. I think this was an incredible video. I think you bring up some great points Alex. My thoughts about Trey is that he’ll only get better. He’s played, like, 10 quarters of professional football, and wants to learn. He’s going to QB camps and putting all the work in. He’s also proving he’s a leader by going to rookie minicamps, calling every rookie after they’re drafted, and more. I’m just so excited to see how he evolves.
10 quarters, a finger injury and a knee injury, bad mechanics poor accuracy and a wobbly 9000mph spiral and a 33.4 QBR...
I hope he takes care of that "wants to learn" thing quickly...
High hopes but low expectations. Jimmy staying to sit is a problem for our salary cap, but it would make me feel a lot better about the risk on this rookie

@@levisnyder6585 it's the last season of his contract? The total QB room price is about AVERAGE for the NFL .. free agency is over, there is nobody to sign that's worth it... It's too late to worry about cap. That money is now mostly guaranteed. You lose most of it if you cut him. If you trade him, somebody is going too make you pay part of his salary for the favor and it still counts against your cap number. He's not going anywhere without a favorable asset in return. It's the dumbest of dumb moves to cut him.
The whole cut Jimmy thing was over months ago. It's oblivious rambling at this point.
Jimmy's lifetime QBR is currently 98.9. that's better than Elway.
Trey's NFL career QBR is 33.4.. that's better than... Uh... Maybe someone...

i think he's got it, but he has to calm down. The same issue i saw against central arkansas is the same issue i saw when he started games. He tries to do too much game time. He has to settle in calmly and control the pace of the Football but that's gonna take time, which brings us back to reps, he just needs more of those, and good news for him, looks like he'll finally get it.

What does this even mean
Trey (and Kyle) settled down very well in the second half of the Texans game.
But the main reason Trey executed the passing game so much better in the Texans game was learning a lot of NFL defensive and offensive scheme for two months on the practice squad, due to elite intelligence and work ethic. This was exactly the type of knowledge he needed to learn coming into the NFL as a relatively inexperienced QB.
Trey is going to do very well and Kyle will make a great offense for him.

I agree with you… His first throw or two was usually a bit of an adventure as he seemed amped up - not nervous (which is important as I think he’s decent under pressure already) but he could improve. I think he’s already shown improvement last year in little things - sometimes in the same game. His footwork and mechanics are not perfect but they are better (and probably good enough if he is good in other areas). He seems to have eliminated some wasted motion in his footwork and while he will never have a super quick release, I felt some of his problems with “hard” passes and strange mechanics had more to do with a 21 year old trying to make up for needing a split second longer to process, by hurrying up his throwing motion and the speed of the pass itself. He didn’t have much trouble with touch in college, so I felt that he could fix this once his processing speeds up - which I think he will do this because his football IQ and ability to read and understand defenses seems like it could be a strength. I agree with Alex that his running will not be like it was in college but I do think he showed improvement in his pocket presence. Initially he’d take off a little early when he could have just shifted or stepped up in the pocket, but he seems like he has already learned to not abandon the pocket too soon -and the really good/important part is that he doesn’t just take off running - he attempts to keep his eyes downfield or tries to reset and still looks to throw. So, while he will likely still rely on his legs (and they may work in plays for this whether it’s option or run plays) I think his legs will be mostly used to evade pressure and buy time to throw. Overall, he’s got a lot to learn but I think he has the talent (physical and especially mental) to be very good in this league- and while the O line is a bit questionable at the moment, he’s still got a lot of talent (players and coaches) around him so he won’t have to do it all himself. That said, if Trey continues to improve like I think/hope he can, I could see the niners being very good for a long time BECAUSE of Trey (and not just with him benefiting from a talented roster around him). We’ll see… The niners have a tough schedule this year and the crazy media folks are always too high or too low on guys, but if we have some patience- since he just turned 22 a couple of months ago- I am excited to see what Trey can do!
I might be in the minority, but I believe Trey will succeed this year. He'll make the rookie mistakes sure, but he does numerous things better than Jimmy. He's decisive, not scared to throw outside the numbers, can roll out if the play breaks down and takes care of the ball. Not to mention he has zip on his throws as well. The Faithful are very excited for him and ready to get Jimmy outta here.

Did you even see this video? I agree Trey will succeed in time but you keep pleading your case like most fans that JG is scared of throwing outside the numbers. But Trey has problems with his short throws, accuracy, and leaving the pocket to early. Anticipation is another. JG was not scared of throwing in tight windows, mainly in the middle of the field but at times cost him with turnovers. He is accurate. So many fans argument is Trey can make the long throws that JG struggled and escape pressure but he also struggles in areas that JG doesn’t
don't be ridiculous--the online horde of fans adores qb's like lance, fields etc...those types of qb's are the darlings of the young online fans...all they get is praise from the media and internet fan base..
He will be lucky to get six wins.
@@MA_808 I'm with you. I don't think we're winning the Super Bowl this season. It's just so obvious who is better between Jimmy and Trey imo. One hasn't gotten better since he came to the team he's only gotten worse. And the other has loads of potential and can still break out of bad habits since he hasn't played that long.

Thanks Alex. 9:47 Lance's problems are mostly in his footwork. He takes some overly long and overly short steps which makes the height of his platform inconsistent. That inconsistent platform moving up and down makes it much harder to throw accurately, for one thing since the view of the field is different from different heights. He's better at this on quick plays where he retains better, more even footwork.
His footwork is is still a work in progress, and it has improved. Some of his low passes were due to taking an overly long plant step, making his platform lower and thus the ball lower.
I would not read much into the Cardinals game. It was an anomaly where Trey did not have much practice, and Kyle did not have much time to craft an offense for him. Kyle tried to give him some run options, but (Kyle said that) some of these were NOT supposed to be keepers. Trey had definite problems making reads against the Cardinals.
Trey radically improved his passing game by his second start against the Texans, due to two months on the practice squad learning offensive and defensive scheme. That's why he was able to execute passes so much better, and this learning was exactly the knowledge he needed as a relatively inexperienced QB coming to the NFL.
More than anything it showed his elite learning ability, coupled with work ethic, to be able to make that large of an improvement in a relatively short time. That bodes very well for his future. He will continue to improve significantly as he continues to learn. And Kyle will have no problem crafting an offense for a QB who can generally launch the ball from anywhere on the field to anywhere else on the field, whether it's deep downfield, outside the numbers, or far cross field, unlike Jimmy.
Trey's primary job is to pass, not to run, so it's good to see him make a major improvement in his pass game execution after the months as the scout team QB on the practice squad. Running is nice to be able to do if a play breaks down, but his primary job on pass plays is always to correctly identify the defense and get the ball to the schemed open receiver.
No prob LE. Yeah, some great points there, check his left foot too. It's usually not pointed in right direction (it's a little too closed) which messes up some of his upper half rotation.
I'm excited to see what Kyle does in the play pass and play action game, with Trey's arm strength I think that will be a fun area where Shanahan can really elevate him.

Could him looking slow be more of a product of him being indecisive as a runner? I agree that he looks less dynamic than he did in college and that he probably isn’t as fast as we thought but I think he does have twitchyness and enough speed. Also encouraged that he improved A LOT from start 1 against AZ to start 2 versus Houston.

4.5 isn’t slow. 21.54 MPH in pads is not slow. You bring up a good point though. He seem very indecisive regarding around running. Lastly, Trey is a big dude (6’4 230) so his 4.5/21.54 speed will look slower than someone who is 5’10 190 pounds.

He’s not slow he just takes big strides bc he’s a bigger dude. If he was shorter like Kyler Murray he’d look fast only bc his shorter legs would require more strides. That’s the only difference
Trey's understanding of offensive and defensive scheme was radically better in his second start due to a lot of learning on the practice squad. That elite learning ability and passing game execution improvement tells me he's going to do very well. Fans need to keep in mind he came to the NFL with very little QB experience.
He's going to do well, and Kyle will create an incredible offense with him. Trey has massive movement (for passing) and arm talent, but more importantly great intelligence and work ethic.
Ignore the Cardinals game as one where neither Trey nor Kyle had enough time to prepare. Alex Rollins read way too much into it, given that.

Great video. I think Steve Young would strongly agree with you. He preaches how much a crutch a QBs legs can be. Affording them the luxury of NOT needing to master reading defenses. And how it took him a ton of discipline to do it, motivated by the thought that reading D is the only way to be elite. Letgs only get you so far.

It seems like much of the media see Jimmy as being much better than Trey (some niner fans as well). I appreciated that you were able to show where they both succeed and struggle. I just hope that Kyle Shanahan can piece together a game plan so that Trey Lance will be placed in the best situation to succeed. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Michael! Interesting, I feel like every 49ers fan I've talked to hates Jimmy and thinks Trey is 2nd coming. I don't think his ceiling is quite as high as people think, but I trust that Kyle can get some quality production out of him while he learns

Nice video Alex! Yeah Alex ,Trey's happy feet are what worry me most. As a Niner fan I am hoping he can be trained out of that? I ask that as a question. Over the years ive seen happy feet and it never seems to come BEFORE someone goes on to have amazing seasons. I dont know man cause its weird there cause JimmyG is still there. I feel we will see this thing where Jimmy eventually replaces Lance some time during the season. Hopefully, with Shanahan being such a good coach he will get Lance where he needs to be. I love JimmyG but watching those last 2 series against the Rams was hard.
Footwork is definitely something that can be fixed, so that's promising. The better your footwork, the better you can play in structure since concepts are timed to come open in sync with the QBs drops, so that will improve his accuracy.
Jimmy hasn't been traded yet because of his injury and teams haven't been willing to give up the capital to bring in a guy who is still rehabbing. It is an odd situation, no doubt about it

I’m excited to see what he can do with this opportunity. He’s being dropped into a perfect environment for a QB to succeed, and he has a rocket arm and elite athleticism. He’s got a great O-like, great weapons, great Run game, defense and head coach. He could be the next Mahomes or Josh Allen. Consistent accuracy is his biggest weakness
If he had such 'elite athleticism' why wasn't he recruited to play at a real football school like Mike Vick?
Great Oline is debatable. Tomlinson gone, Mack considering retirement, McGlinchey coming off a torn quad and was never good at pass pro. Also I don't see "elite" athleticism

He has the same struggles that Allen used to have. If Allen can do it, Lance might too. Might is an important word though
He also overstrides. A lot of quarterbacks have a wide base so they don't have to step as drastically into their throw. Someone like Tom Brady keeps a narrow base and does his signature bouncing, where he takes a stride coming down. It works because he starts with a narrower base than most. Trey Lance does the same bounce and stride, but starts with his base already widened leading to an overstride that drags his back foot, keeping his hips from following through and lowering his arm angle.

I'm very anxious as a niner fan. I truly don't know if his skill set is what can unlock this offense. I was disappointed by his running ability and don't like that he doesn't protect himself. His accuracy is questionable but his big arm leaves you hyped on potential. We got a tough schedule this upcoming season. I'm very excited to see him but I don't know how successful he'll be.

Alex interesting video as always. I’m just curious. Why are you willing to give Trey Lance more of the benefit of the doubt than you were Tua from a few weeks back? By all reports, Tua has the capability to understand and operate Shanahan’s system. Tua has strong ability to read defenses pre-snap and is a very accurate thrower of the football. In your Tua video, I felt you glossed over the oline factors and particularly in his rookie season there was Flores playing games with him.
I’m not a member of Tuanon by any stretch. I do think that it’s popular to trash a young QB that’s had a lot go against him these first 2 seasons, but yet other young players such as Lance are being given more leeway to grow and develop. Curious your thoughts on this. Love the channel as always!
Thanks Sam. I think Tua is a very limited player compared to Trey which is why I was harder on him. Tua needs to play the game in a very specific fashion where he's playing with perfect timing and within structure, and he's not THAT good at doing either of those. His accuracy is good, but needs to be better and he turns the ball over too often, plus the Dolphins have not allowed him to master a system since he's on his third. I agree that I should have shed more light on the OL issues, so that's my bad, but I don't buy that Flores was playing games with him or trying to sabotage his career in any way(Flores knows if he loses games he gets fired).
I had Trey Lance ranked 5th in QBs in the 2021 draft and still consider him a 2nd round Prospect. As a 49er fan I'm still extremely stunned that staff gave up 3 first round picks for this kid. As much as I want my team to succeed, I'm not as optimistic about Lance as much as the average 49er fan is. I've watched every play of his college and NFL career up to date and the film is pretty underwhelming at times. Major concerns for me that are already showing up instantly in the NFL. Wondering if he's capable of making a huge leap. Because he'll need it.
I also had Trey ranked 5 but I'd have to push back on 2nd round prospect. Without a doubt drafting him 3 is very risky, and then you add on the insane amount of capital. I'm with you that he's looked questionable so far, hope he proves us wrong!
@@AlexRollinsNFL wheh I say 2nd round prospect, I'm more referring to the top end of the 2nd. That seems to be a sweet spot for developmental QBs. (I'd put him slightly higher if he had more experience) With that said, I can see a team justifying a late 1st round for Trey. Just not my cup of tea. Either way, Great video and I definitely hope he proves us wrong. Go Niners. 🤟🏽
@@jonathanlopez2697 I think while he is a developmental QB, he does have high end tools that you're not going to find with just any rookie prospect. Mahomes and Lamar were a couple of developmental guys who you weren't gonna find in the 2nd round. Appreciate the comment Jonathan!
@@AlexRollinsNFL Lamar & Mahomes were much better prospects though. Even from a statistical standpoint. It wasn't even close. Mahomes cut his teeth throwing the football at Texas Tech for a few years posting up HUGE numbers. Same with Lamar both passing and running against real competition. You said it yourself Lance is not as great of a runner people expected him to be. He's no where near the Lamar level of runner. Even then Lamar Jackson was drafted 32nd overall. On that fringe second round territory. In 16 FULL games in 2019 Lance only passed for 2,700 yards. (Cringe) . The only thing I find Lance has that's ELITE is his arm strength. I don't think he has elite accuracy, I don't think he is an elite runner, I don't think he processes at an elite level, I don't think he has elite pocket presence, he definitely didn't play against elite talent. I mean there's a lot left to be desired. I think he and Kaepernick posted similar college numbers, similar skill sets yet I even believe Kaepernick was a more elusive runner than Trey and he went in the 2nd round. I just don't see it man.. anyway, you got me on a ramble now lol. As much as I want to like Trey, I just don't see him on that level.
As a Niners faithful, I'm excited to see what Trey can do. I wasn't disappointed in his rookie performance. Especially because he wasn't being prepared to be the starter nor did he have the offense scheme built around Jimmy down. But with a scheme built around him and his strengths, I think he will be good. Tired of all the haters, let the kid prove himself, even Brady wasn't a starter.

It's because Jimmy is injured and teams aren't looking to trade for him. The 49ers don't want to outright cut him
davis mills had less college games and looked much more better.
Sadly, we now may never know. We will now have to wait another year, if at all.

He really needs to learn how to protect his self running the ball. He has long, slim legs and can't run with much power against NFL players. It reminds me of RG III - except he was a much faster runner. It's concerning because every time he takes off I get queasy when he gets hit or goes down. Has to change because I don't think he can survive a 17-game season running like this.
I think he was more tentative in his running than he was in college. I think we see a more certain and poised Trey this year. Will that translate to immediate success? We will have to see

All this kid needs is playing time and to get into a groove, get into the zone and once he does the skies the limit for him.
Lance has a lot of potential. And Jimmy makes too many mistakes. However, Jimmy has also come in clutch a lot of games and the Niners’ win pct with him leading the offense is something like 75-80%. Without Jimmy, it’s like 20%. Idc what people say about his errors, Jimmy G is a Winner

I find it odd that the Niners stretched for a QB that has weaknesses in the some of the areas that are hardest to teach. I don't wish HIM any ill will, but I do think it could be a heaping serving of humble pie for Shanahan and Lynch

I believe Shanahan thought he could add a similar run game element to the offense like he had with RG3 and due to the arm strength could develop the drop back passing game over time, but he's been taken aback at how raw Lance is.

For example, your belief that Kyle has "been taken aback at how raw Lance is"; and you say "is" as in today, not "was" as in when he was drafted. Trey wasn't drafted to start in 2021; that's why they kept Jimmy. They understood that Trey didn't have a lot of experience, played only 1 year in college in 2019 and then didn't play in 2020 because of Covid, instead opting to declare for the draft and spending 7 months training and working on areas that needed improvement, and was going to need time to be ready to start. Trey was only going to play if 1) Jimmy had an injury that kept him from playing or 2) the team record was so bad that Kyle went with Trey to get him reps and experience. The first happened for the second half of the Seattle game, the 1st Arizona game, and the Texan game. The second almost happened if the 49ers had lost to the Rams in November and were 3-6.
It's now 2022. Kyle has watched and worked with and talked with and game planned with Trey from rookie mini camp last May through the end of the season in January. He believes Trey is ready to start and has said so. In an interview with Rich Eisen on 2/11, Trey said that talking with Kyle as much as possible this off season, continuing to build that relationship, him understanding how Kyle sees the game and Kyle understanding how he sees the game, making sure they're on the same page this year was important. At the Annual Owner's Meeting on 3/31, Kyle was asked about Trey's off season. He talked about what Trey was doing and would be doing until OTAs and said "Trey's the guy I talk to all the time".
So, yes, there's a lot on Trey this year, but also on the team and Kyle. Game planning and calls that play to Trey's strengths: playing under center, play action, roll outs, zone reads, and perhaps, as they did at NDSU, an early deep ball play call to put the defense on notice.

I’m a huge Shanahan fan and I love what the 9ers have built but they mortgaged their future on this Lance pick. If he doesn’t pan out, they may never win a ‘ship.
I have to point out that the first two plays, those pockets are not the same. Maybe Lance could have thrown & taken a hit, but it was pretty clear the right tackle didn't hold his guy for more than 1.5 seconds. Second pocket is way more stagnate, holding off a stunt on the right side rather than being beat on the outside.

I think he’ll be a little better than that, last year he improved each game he played, it was pretty clear when you watched. I sorta expect the same thing to happen again

I’m still a fan of taking a chance on Trey Lance along with his upside and avoiding the Jimmy G 2.0 pitfall that is Mac Jones. Maybe they could’ve gone about trading up better but I’d rather whiff on this swing than know that I’m fucked if I ever fall behind in a game because my QB can’t push the ball down the field with a lick of consistency.

@@PhatMon920 the niners were a borderline playoff team last year and went 9-6 with jimmy. Jimmy also had 3K yards, 20Tds and 15 TOs(numbers identical to rookie mac jones without 3 all pros on offense).Expecting trey and the niners to Do better than that is not being unrealistic
I can't help but feel like the 49er's tossed Kaepernick, sat in QB hell for a pile of years, and then traded a bunch of picks for a guy that looks like less athletic Kaepernick.
Now, I was no where near a Kaep fan as a player, but I can't help but watch Lance and just keep thinking "Gods that just looks like Kaep on the field"
I will say, this kid is still young and has better coaching in place, he could definitely surpass Kaep, but it...it just feels ironic.

Hard to believe the 49ers' brain trust didn't pick up on Lance's negatives from his college tape, except I guess there wasn't a lot of it to evaluate. Makes it harder to understand why they surrendered so many picks to move up for him, when Lance might've been available to them without moving up. Mac Jones almost certainly would have been, and he looks like the best QB of the 2021 class.
I'm a Chargers fan and as such am ever so thankful that Justin Herbert fell into our laps in 2020, without having to give up a single draft pick. Watching Lance struggle is a reminder of just how remarkable Herbert's first two seasons have been.

I don't think they missed them, just were confident in how much they could improve them. There were rumors that they moved all of those picks to get Mac Jones, and were pressured into moving off of him.

I think Trey is the future. Jimmy is the now. Jimmy's weaknesses are very apparent. He doesn't have a big arm. He doesn't stay healthy too. And he's not very mobile.
Trey is younger than Jimmy but he has to learn not to get himself injured like in the Cardinals game but the mobile game is there. He also has a big arm. He needs to work on his mechanics and his feetwork to be good and great. Trey has years to learn that.
Finally a fair Lance opinion from someone who doesn't cover the 49ers. I think the 2nd half of the Texans game made me excited of what Trey could become but he needs reps to improve

I still don't like the 49ers move for Trey Lance, mostly not THAT they drafted him, but HOW. They had the 12th overall pick and looking at the 2021 draft now, it seems somewhat plausible that either Justin Fields or Trey Lance still would have been available at 12, or at least that trading up to 8th or 9th would have been enough to get Trey Lance.
I think the commanders would’ve took trey. I think they went to three to make sure they get the guy they want. I see your concern tho.

Its so crazy to me that everyone thinks he needs to be ready this year, I think they kept Jimmy g for a reason and thats fine the young dude needs to develop.
They invested 3 first round picks in him in part to get him on his rookie deal, he's cheap only for a couple more years
They didn't get rid of Jimmy G because there are only so many QB needy teams and those teams don't appear interested in trading for Jimmy.
I wont lie Trey Lance reminds me a lot of Cam Newton. I watched Cam play more than any other QB and he gave me a lot of flashbacks. I think as he develops he will learn to protect himself on the run and grow more patient in the pocket. He has a lot of upside.
I'm worried about Trey's body, he has a similar running style but he couldn't make it through a full game without getting injured.

The “non fixable wonky throwing motion” hasn’t aged well since over the last two weeks in OTAs his mechanics look much cleaner. I agree he isn’t as dynamic running as I thought he’d be. 49ers defense has potential to be the best in the league this year and will keep us afloat while trey gets game reps to start the year and if he be even 10% better than Jimmy this year, watch out.

He's got a big arm but he's never going to be pin point accurate with his hitch and the toesy footwork, he also doesn't spin the ball well so balls tend to sail. There's a tendency to exit the pocket unless it's super clean, and he doesn't really hang in there to deliver the ball right before taking the hit, it's just not his style. It's not really something coaching can fix, Shanahan will have to scheme around those deficiencies.
Some things you can fix a lot is muscle memory. For example it’s no different than Lonzo balls jumpshot ( if you watch basketball) shooting the ball mechanical af. A error can differentiate a great shooter from a good one and a good one from a bad one. I brought up Lonzo because look at his jumper from day 1 in the nba and year 3 or 5. It’s a significant difference and his numbers shooting wise went up , but you have to be willing to change. A lot of people tend to want to change but when adversity hits the blame it on the change and revert back. If he was turnovers prone i would agree but mechanics wise it’s all about trying to make that your new muscle memory.
@@ShisamiiGames not easy to change at multiple levels, it's not just the footwork, it's not just the hitch, it's not just sitting too high in his stance, or not being able to generate enough spin on the ball. With basketball you have time to square up. Not saying it's impossible but the problem is much more complex in Lance's case and the first thing Lance decided to do in the offseason was he went to a sprinting coach. He might not recognize this as a problem, he's not surrounded by people who are eager to point out what's he's doing wrong. People around him tend to be complimentary.

Just like he’s is also training with a notable Qb coach this offseason too. So he’s hitting every box we aren’t just going to act like all he’s focused on is running. When he got that Qb coach as soon offseason started. Also with basketball shooting is just as mechanical as throwing a football . You can set you feet but if you mechanics off you will most likely miss.
I would say those are all things that can be fixed my coaching. Coaching and practice/game reps

The numbers on Lance are skewed at best. Shanascam never ran any plays that complimented Lance's skill set, instead running plays suited to Jimmy Two-Picks or using Lance more like a wildcat halfback. Not sure what is going on in that locker room, but something needs to change or Lance will be labeled a bust.

DB I'm going to push back on this comment, but mostly cause we have the hindsight of how good Mac looked in his rookie season. I think he does have good ability to push the ball downfield despite his meh arm strength, but I'm only confident in that because we've seen it happen in the NFL. Without knowing that last year, it would have been an incredibly questionable pick

I've watched a lot of videos of him throwing the football... and he's just not accurate. One of the several videos that I saw was a 49ers/Chargers joint practice where the QB's performed in a skills challenge. Lance was the only one of the six QB's that didn't hit the target at least one time. He was shown up by Nate Sudfeld & Easton Stick. He may be able to stick around a little while because of his legs, but unless he can improve his accuracy... he'll be a bust.
At this point I'm just hoping he'll hit Mac Jones's rookie level!

I've been so confused with all the hype from trey lance. He had one great season as a sophomore and now he's being positioned as a franchise QB. Do the 49ers just know something we don't because I feel like his massive lack of experience could spell disaster for him.
49ers got a new QB coach so that should help with footwork and mechanics
