Brock Purdy is terrorizing the NFL, and there is nothing that defenses can do about it. Kyle Shanahan, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers offense is absolutely loaded with superstar talent, but, don’t think Brock Purdy is just some guy. He has proven through the first month of the 2023 season that he is absolutely a legit quarterback, and he is the lead dog of a devastating attack. How good is he really? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze the 49ers offense with Quarterback Brock Purdy leading the way.

Summarized: Purdy's processor is incredibly fast, he knows the ins and outs of both coverage shells and pass-rush looks, and he's ICE-COLD under pressure. He might not have all the physical tools, but he's an incredibly intelligent QB who won't back down to any defense.

Dallas will be his ultimate test because they will be the best pass rush he's faced this season with Micah along with the best team by far. he wont have time to go through all of his progressions and he's not a very mobile qb which Dallas struggles with so his best bet is to keep getting rid of the ball fast whenever he throws those quick short to intermediate throws

After watching several QB YT channels (AlexRollins was a lil late to the party, as he admitted), even last year, it was plain as day to see how good Purdy is and that's he's different.. I honestly haven't seen QBing this good in the Red n Gold since the 90s.. Yeah, his potential turnover percentage is a bit high but he is still technically a rookie. That's what's impressive here.
And who's to say his arm doesn't get better? Tom wasn't elite right away. His deep ball wasn't amazing right away either. Brock can probably work on a few mechanics to clean up his deep ball. He did sort of miss an off season of training because his elbow was rehabbing.
I say all of this just say "Bro is just getting it done." Sure, he has all the talent around him. He has an amazing coach. And he has an amazing defense too, but so did Tom. And we discredited him for many years as well.
Brock still has things to learn and grow in but as long as he puts in the work, keeps to the grind, I don't see why he can't be a great QB.

Some guys like kapernick have great opening acts followed by disappointment. Others like Kurt Warner who also get an opportunity due to injury go from Un drafted to 2x mvp. But Warner had Faulk, bruce, and holt. Kap had the offense that nearly got Alex smith to the Super Bowl. Purdy arguably has an offensive package as good or better than both. Most of the people saying "dont question it! Purdy is cooking!" are the same people that will criticize other NFL players by saying "he just sucks, don't question it" when their struggles mostly arent their fault. If Purdy was drafted by the Browns, you wouldn't know who he is (and thats no knock against Purdy, hes good, but how many other good players never even got a chance of recognition because teams dont use or teach them properly?)

Purdy has scrambled less this season. He has that in his bag, but last season he relied on that a little too much especially in the Dallas game in the divisional rd and left some yards on the field. This season he seems to be more reliant presnap recognition and anticipation which has led to some really impressive throws. And BTW, he completed some nice deep balls vs Arizona. His deep ball is not consistent but he CAN make those throws
I would like to see him use his legs a little more but what he and Shanahan arre doing is certainly working.
The Niners offense hasn't used YAC as much this season to gain yards..Purdy is #10 in air yards thrown....SF QBs have traditionally been bottom 10 in this metric. And he is also throwing over the middle a bit less this season based on his throw charts, which may be the reason his INT % is very low ( something Arod used to do)

Him throwing deep at the very least keeps the defense honest. I remember seeing several plays where Jimmy had Aiyuk wide open 1-1 but he would still throw it short against stacked boxes. I think Brock has a combination of skills that, while none are “awesome” - you won’t see him throw 80 yards like Josh Allen or have a Load-to-Release (LTR) of just over 0.3 like Tua - he seems to be good at nearly everything. Obviously he’s really accurate and his ball placement and throwing on-time or even early if necessary helps his receivers a lot. But it’s his brain that sets him apart. I read that the NFL ditched the Wonderlic - I think it was political (yes, I have taken it myself and scored better than the average NFL QB and I had just had major spine surgery to boot) - but Brock took another IQ-like test and scored very high, supposedly. So I think Brock is successful because he has a combination of smarts and few true weaknesses.

The offensive scheme is more about an overall philosophy and normally the biggest differences are just the language and vernacular associated with said scheme.. people keep trying to come up with qualifiers as to why he fell so far.. he fell because humans were involved and humans are easily distracted by what looks good on paper and most arent going to take a shot on a kid who looks like the HS team catcher because if they flop, they lose their jobs.. if you fail on a 'stud' pick, well, you made the best choice you could at the time.. Well, unless you're Kyle and Lynch, lolol.. They drafted a completed a dud and moved all kinds of draft capital to do so, and were literally rescued by their QB coach suggesting to draft Purdy..

At 6:23 the defense must be REALLY frustrated. The rusher had nearly a free shot at Purdy and the receiver isn’t exactly wide open. But Purdy looks like he takes a five-step drop, throws early off his back foot really to a spot, then slides to even avoid getting hit while delivering a strike. Most quarterbacks here might try to set that back foot to push off and in this case they would get sacked and be lucky to just unload a duck, trying to simply not take a loss. But Brock seems to do this over and over again so it’s no fluke.

It's probably too hard to get a Brady-Manning-level rivalry between QBs of different conferences. Those two met virtually every year, either because of the 3 year AFC East vs. South rotation, or because they won their divisions. (And they were in the same division in 2001.) Purdy and Mahomes could meet once every 2 years at most, outside of Super Bowls. Purdy-Hurts is a good longterm possibility, though.

Rookies often have statistical outliers of a first season (There's a ton recently: Watson, Burrows, Mayfield, Jackson, etc.) where they will light up the league for their first season or part of a season. Once there is enough tape to analyze tendencies and craft a Pro defense to stop/slow them down there is usually a period of struggling and regressing to the league norm, or slightly below. It happens to rookies all the time, the question becomes whether they can learn how to outwit the defense that knows what you want to do.
By about the third quarter of week 1, I was already thinking Purdy looks even better than last year (that stat about his intermediate field passing completion rate improving form 80% to 90% this year is literally incredible - if anyone can find any other QB's at any point in their career that have put up those kind of stats, I'm all ears as to who). Week 5 is done, one of the two other teams in the Conference that could challenge the 49ers has been handily dispatched, and Purdy looks like a vet's vet that has seen everything an NFL defense can bring at you. His offensive teammates, and the creative playcalling help a lot (no doubt, landing in the right spot matters), but this kid looks every bit the real deal and I'm dubious that there is a team in the NFL that can stop this 49ers squad if they're healthy.
