I wish there were more licenses required in other fields. I am a tile guy and follow after plumbers and aways see bad remodel plumbing. I was a plumbers apprentice for a few years and know enough to tell the general contractor did the plumbing on a shower replace/ upgrade. I always get into trouble voicing my opinion as to why I am putting in a 1500 to 5k custom shower over coccus/ copper / pex/ shark bite cobble together when I know it will eventually leak and the home owner will just have to suffer later damages. I like your integrity. I do the same thing in my trade, the right way or not at all!

I can actually understand why the second "scammer" said the tank was broken. Bolts don't just loosen by themselves, and he didn't know someone just loosened it up on purpose; he probably thought there was a bigger problem that did it. He still should have suggested something more like, "I tightened this bolt, which worked for now, but it'll just come loose again, so you should replace this tank as soon as you can."

Water leaking through walls is a bit of a sore point with me.
I was living in a cheap rental unit about 20 years ago. It was an old place, had a few problems but it was cheap. The toilet used to back up occasionally (large tree right outside the building) . The water heater (baby unit with about 25 - 30 litres) was mounted in the kitchen cupboard . It was winter time and the thing stopped heating . This made showering / washing my hair really hard due to the very cold water. After a 2nd call to the real estate complaining big time they got the thing fixed the next day.
The plumber came along, looked at it, found the heating coil was shot (no surprise after 20 yrs) . He gave them a quote to fix it but suggested a new one as he can't guarantee how long the fix will last as its old, a bit rusty and ready to die. To fix it was about $190 where a new baby heater (slightly bigger) was about $270. The owner said "Fix it". The plumber said, "Ok, but it will most likely break again. ". The owner goes, "No. Fix it" . Even I not being a plumber could see it was old and tired looking.
About 3 - 4 weeks later it died leaking water through the cupboard, through the wall, soaking the carpet in the bedroom. At first I didn't notice but within a day or two I could smell mould and this new life form had grown out of the carpet near that wall. It was like a black plant type thing and it smelt bad. I also noticed the carpet was soggy and smelled. I notified the real estate agent and a few days passed. I was at work and came home to find my bed had been moved, brand new carpet in the bedroom and a new water heater (bigger one)
I found out later that the real estate owner / worker had purchased the property . The property had been for sale and the water heater breaking the first time was done to complete the sale before the new owners took over.
By the time it broke a 2nd time is was now the real estate owners problem so I do understand why they did the dodgy to save $80
The real estate / owner visited a few more times and I realized that the owners are the real estate (cctv set up). A few months later I got a notice to leave (as they fixed the place more and more) because they needed the place empty to do an upgrade (new appliances, cupboards, flooring.
By the end of it the rent almost tripled when it went back on the market. No way I was paying triple and reapplying. Besides, an evil woman had just got her house built behind where I was and she was a crazy angry woman who would leaf blow at 6am every morning. Nobody needs that noise at 6am.

there is a huge diffrence in being honest with the customer and telling them that something could do with replacing before more issues happen and straight up telling them it needs to be replaced right then and there,
a customer is way more likely to get something replaced if you advise replacement than when you tell them it's the only option.
one of the first things you learn in sales is to help a customer sell them self on something, give them options and outline the pro's/con's of the options, provide them with the knowlage to make their own decision.
especially since you don't know the customers financial situation, they might be in a squeeze this month and realisticly can't affort a new water heater at this point in time.
but by being transparant with a customer and giving them the option you build up a relation with the customer, tell them look i can fix the problem right now for X, but your heater is getting up there in age, and it might be smart to think about replacing it before more issues come up because if i need to come out here every few months to fix something it is going to add up in the long run, you might not sell a new heather today, but this gives the customer the time to think it over and come up with the money for a new heather, and if they feel good about the service and information provided, they will come back to you once they want/need it replaced, and what do you know now you have charged the same customer twice, once for the fix and once for the replacement, and they will feel good about it, because they are the one that decided to call you for the replacement, they don't feel upsold and next time they have an issue they will call you again, because they feel good about you and your company.
it's all about the long term gain, building a good reputation with a customer will always get you more proffit in the long term than just selling that one heater today and never hearing from the client again.

    ( be advised I’m a southern plumber)
First off: the water heater, no expansion tank, no real dedicated t&p line ran ( you can get away with it if there is a floor drain) and those goddamn flex lines on the heater. Always hard pipe or Pex it. Those lines leak easily, the washer can go bad, they can develop a pinhole leak, and are easy to kink. Those are literally the tools of the lazy plumber in my book or worse handy man. Since I believe the early 2000 or 1996 thermal expansion tanks have been code, they have to be installed on the cold line after the ball valve or gate valve. The t&p line ( temperature and pressure relief line) must be ran out of the house, and have a 3/4 inch pipe with a 90 at least 8-12 inches off the ground per code.
Edits to come when I finish the vid lol

I called a licensed electrician to come and quote me a project. I got a quote that was just outrageous. The member of the company I called didn’t measure anything, didn’t do anything and went to the backyard and talked on the phone for 40minutes and came inside to give me a quote. I called another electrician because I knew that was a scam and the quote I got from another was 1/10 the price I was quoted. That’s how outrageous the number was. I was 20 at the time and I’m certain they saw me and thought I wouldn’t know any better. I also didn’t like the “yeah I can be out here in the morning wiring this house up for you boss” because 1 I had not even heard there price yet, 2 I had not signed off on anything, 3 I had not gotten a second opinion yet. I’d just recommend getting a second opinion for anything you are having done on your home or any property you own.

You actually know guys who have done stuff like this? Ive never heard of a tech actually breaking or scamming somebody maybe its not as rare as i thought? I know some guys maybe arent as thorough they notice the heater is older they notice its leaking the best recommendation is to replace it instead of repairing it anyways. I mean everybody has different ways of doing things ontop of that just like one of the plumbers said 'I didnt want to mess with it' because sometimes messing with older shit specially without discussing the possibilities before you could open up a whole new can of worms with that customer may even wind up making the repairs for free throwing your time and materials in the trash. Also most things dont just suddenly come loose so you call a plumber to come to your house he notices the supply line is leaking hes gonna assume its fuckin broken he isnt going to just assume you loosened it to try and trick him lol. I dont know im not trying to defend the idiots in this video but in all honestly any heater over 5-6 years I recommend replacing it instead of throwing a bunch of money at a repair. I would have also asked the customer if they had done any work on the heater recently considering the one line was hard piped and the other line was a newer looking flex line the very first thing any plumber should have done is inspect the flex lines and see if they were installed correctly and discuss with the customer how long ago the line was installed.

Plumbing Explained very good point. These guys could have had more of a conversation before giving estimates. But walking up to the heater and putting your wrench on it you now assume responsibility, maybe homeowner joe was tinkering around and cracked the nipple coming out of the heater, you go to tighten it and it begins leaking more then before. Now wife says “you caused more leaking then before you fix it for free now.” What’s your defense? Oh I thought that would fix it. Good luck with that. I wonder if any of the plumbers responding to the leaking water heater did some further investigation. I would probably shut off the water, take off the fitting and inspect the threads to see if it was cracked, boogered up or maybe not taped up right. At a bare minimum I would ask if it was serviced recently, to find some explanation of why it was loose.

This is WAY more common than you think, especially the "home repair" field. I used to have a company in Texas, that specialized in "handicap" (we worked with the actual STATE of Texas) .. anything from wheelchair ramps, to wheelchair shower installation and grab bars in showers. The great thing with that type of work is, you have to be licensed and up to date with the codes, as every single job you do before getting paid is inspected by the State of Texas. There were so many times I had to actually go out there and fix or even repair what other companys(that worked with the State) had done. They literally threw a piece of plywood down and called it a wheelchair ramp for a 75 yr old lady... It didn't take long for Texas to pull of their contracts from outside sources and put everything under their own banner.... The easiest thing I can tell you is... Never feel like you don't have a say so when you're talking with your contractor about work and if you feel like you're being "pressured" to go in the direction they want, but its not what you were wanting at all.. Then by all means, speak your mind as you're the client or find a company that wouldn't make you feel like you got strong armed for a quick buck.

One roofer said I needed new shingles. Needless to say I never called him back. I knew the shingles were only a few years old.
I got a reference from my awesome plumber. The roofer got on the roof. Inspected everything. Told me everything looks only a few years old. I should have called my plumber the first time. 🤦‍♂️

Rule 1 of scamming: the scam doesn't have to be smart to work. In fact the dumber the scam, the more people you filter out of your pool for schmucks. In scam emails for example they _intentionally_ put in misspellings and bad grammar to make anyone who is capable of noticing ignore it and anyone who didn't notice would be more likely to fall for the scam.
I could probably name a few politicians who could also fit that pattern but I don't want to get into politics right now...

That's actually smart because if it's out of your scope and you try to fix it anyway, any issues that happen afterwards are your fault. This way, there's business insurance, and such backing you up. Always trust in the paper trail, and take before and after pictures whenever possible.

@A_GODS Yes! And make a point of bringing in drop cloths, tarps, puck boards for sliding appliances, etc. I tell you, there's a type of laminate floor that's molded to have ridges like wood grain to match the pattern printed on it, which makes it really soft, like I can dent it with a fingernail. I make sure to point that out to the homeowner if I'm moving a fridge since modern floorplans tend to stick them in odd locations.
