    You were right kicsi is a turkish loan word from several thousend years ago. There is a sentence which is almost the same: "zsebemben sok kicsi alma van" ( in my pocket there are many small apples). While "eleven hal úszik a víz alatt" is almost the same as in finnic. Fun fact: in the 13th century several tribes spoke hungarian, got wiped out after mongol invasion. Some uralic language show resemblence, in the finno-ugric family. During centuries Hungarian took many latin, german and slavic words, however due to the agglutinative structure the language remained very stable. We can understand old-hungarian scripts from 900 years ago, while its barely the case for german languages.

    As a native Hungarian who speaks Finnish as well, I would rather say that these languages are relatively close to each other... I mean it was really easy for me to learn the basics of Finnish as a Hungarian since both are Finno-Ugric languages. However, these languages had been separated so early in time that we could not kinda "create" anything in common, except basic words and very similar pronunciation. In terms of pronunciation, we always get the feedback that anyone who hears us speaking Hungarian thinks we are speaking Finnish with a very weird accent, but when they are trying to pay more attention, they realize that it is just not possible for them to understand anything from Hungarian at all. It is really funny, especially when we get this from native Finnish people... :D

      @MiklosHajma ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@jccbm Yeah, because it's technically not an European language :) As far as I can tell, what you had the most trouble with, are the agglutinative nature of our language with all those affixes and combined words. I was laughing when you were trying to take apart/theorize some words in the wrong way, like "rendőr" (rend = order, őr = guard). Or "titkárnő" which has it's roots in the word "titok" (= secret) similar to English - so as the language being vowel harmonic, you can't just mash words together, the "-ár" affix will result in titkár and you can leave it at that or put "nő" after it if you want to specify that you're talking about a female secretary. Actually this affix is pretty much similar in usage with the English one when you describe an occupation or something you're proficient in (like in listen - listener).

    Fun fact:it takes a foreigner on average 15 years to learn hungarian to fluency ,this doesn't account for background,as no matter where you're from,it will still be exaclty as hard to learn the gulyás language
    Edit: also hungarian separates it's vowels into two categories,long and short,short=a,e,i,o,ö,ü,u,and long=á,é,í,ó,ő,ű,ú and back and front vowels,front vowels=e,é,i,í,ö,ő,ü,ű and back vowels=a,á,o,ó,u,ú,this is an important part of grammar as hungarian has vowel harmony,so when you add a suffix,it has to have the right vowel,so for exemple hal is fish,but halad is your fish(hal+ad),and ember is human,but embered is your human(ember+ED)

    • @Dicska
      @Dicska ปีที่แล้ว +94

      To make it even more spicy, we don't even use this vowel harmony consistently. Like, út means road but if it's yours then it's utad - BUT hús means meat, but when it's yours it't húsod (note the difference in accents, too - it's not a typo). Similarly, híd (bridge)-> hidad (your bridge). They aren't even the same vowel group. I really have no idea how other people can learn this mess of a language. It also makes _us_ harder to learn English, since there are so many differences in grammar.

      @thomaskolb8785 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      @@Dicska Actually, for me, the most tricky thing was to fully understand the social ladder built into the Hungarian language. As a foreigner one can sound super rude just by accident.
      Like saying "mit kérsz?" instead of "mit tetszik kívánni?" when you mean "what do you want?" to an unknown or elderly person, or also from a man to a woman. You can say "maga mit kér?", and the words are all polite, the grammar is correct, but the whole phrase sounds frightfully aggressive. But then again, if you say "mit tetszik kérni?" to a small child or a pet, then it sounds absolutely ridiculous.

    • @Dicska

    This was really fun to watch, although I think some precision would be welcome in Duolingo! What's important to remember is that Hungarian is an "agglutinative" language, which means that we add suffixes at the end of words to give a precise meaning of how they're used in a sentence. So, for example, "bort" and "vizet" aren't the actual words for "wine" and "water" (those are "víz" and "bor"), but they are "conjugated" as such because they are the object in their sentences. For example, if you went on the water, you'd say "vízen", if you took a swim IN the water, you'd say "vízbe", if you cook pasta WITH water it's "vízzel", and actually quite a lot more cases. Also, the verb "to be" (Lenni, én vagyok, te vagy, etc), is slightly confusing, because while it mainly means "to be", the third person is generally omitted (as in, You'd for example say "This is wine-> ez bor, He/she is a teacher -> ő tanár, they are police officers -> ők rendőrök), the third person singular is actually confusingly used to convey possession ("to have"). So, for example, "I have wine" would translate to "Van borom" (litterally "There is my wine"), but
    "you have wine" would be "Van borod" ("there is your wine"), "Houston, we have a problem" would be "Houston, van egy problémánk" (litt. Houston, there is an Our Problem) as per the agglutinative language.This is part of what makes Hungarian so damn hard. Apart from that, some phrases on Duolingo made me smile a bit because you just wouldn't ever say them like that in reality, we would never casually state that something is not an apple but a car.

    Fellow Hungarian here, your pronounciation is refreshingly on point! :D Yep, we pack everything together into affixes in words, changing the base of the word depending on how it sounds easier (Hungarian has a lot of partial or full "resemblance" where vocals blend together, meaning we not necessarily say things as they are written). Ex. -T is an affix to express the subject (answers the "what"/mit question in a sentence). Sör = beer. Sört = THE beer (pointing at the subject of the sentence). This was a fun video, thank you! :)

    You hit the nail on the head with the 'kicsi'. I looked it up in an etimological dictionary, and it is, indeed, a word of ancient turkish origin.

      Depends on the student's mothertounge. Both hungarian and japanese are agglutinative languages with a foreign phonetic inventory, free world order and five different tenses for politeness, but hungarian at least is commonly written in the latin alphabet, and includes technical language of greek, latin turkish and german origin. Japanese has its own alphabet, and has technical language mostly derived from chinese. But for a chinese speaker, japanese would probably be wastly simpler to learn.

    I understood that it is a nice way to breakthrough the basic grammar and learn some few words. 14:44 actually, both would be correct, but the nuance is different.
    Hungarian grammar may seem weird compared to English and many other languages, because there isn't a specific order for the parts of the sentence, instead they are put in the order of importance. So if an object is the focus of the sentence, you start with a noun. If the thing that happens is the most important, you start the sentence with a verb. If the person involved is the focus, then you start with the pronoun. And if a trait is the most important, you start with an adjective.

In rural areas they were commonly used back in the 90s and 2000s. Less so today, as most people have either gas boilers or some other electric heating that provides warm water without having to store it, hence why people were trying to sell them as they were no longer needed.
