Computer distance won't just be trickier with a standard bifocal, it basically will be non-existent. But then you do go on to say one can set up a bifocal with intermediate at the top and reading at the bottom, if one is willing to do away with any distance correction. It takes a lot of teaching to let patients know that a bifocal can be set up 3 different ways: Distance/Near; Distance/Intermediate; or Intermediate/Near. Or of course, the trifocal (Very few seem to desire those). I wondered about this before. I was prescribed reading glasses around 42 that were +1.25, but only needed them for my IPhone or small print. On a computer, no issues, except maybe small print distinguishing a 0 from an 8. At 55, I need +2.75 and +1.50 for computer. Holding things at a distance doesn’t make any difference now; I have to squint to see it up close.
So thankful I found your video tonight. I have an eye Drs appointment in the morning. I already have progressives but I absolutely cannot see the writing on my 26 inch computer screen without wrenching my neck up. I have bought an arm for it and moved it every direction possible. I need to read lines on it from the top to bottom for work. It's gotten so bad I just bought a laptop and I lay the front part of it below me and open it almost like a book. I will be asking for computer/reading lenses along with progressives tomorrow. Thank you !

I sit about 2.5 feet away from my screen, no trouble at all seeing it. I put on my glasses for everything else (bicycling, driving, etc). I have no troubles seeing the screen with or with out glasses on with out feeling strain, though I just choose to not wear them. I can look at things near me like a book with glasses on, and have no troubles quickly focusing on close objects with glasses on - but it's not comfortable as I can feel my eye's start to strain. My Dr. has said I might want to start considering progressive lenses, but I don't like the distortion that occurs with those, and since I don't have problems seeing anything near me or focusing quickly, I'm just not willing to go down that rabbit hole at this time. So off with the glasses is a good solution currently. I don't wear computer glasses nor do I have blue light coatings - though holy crow is there a push on big time for that pricey coating. I'm not overly concerned or convinced at this time that blue blockers are necessary (at least not for me) given how much blue light the various screens emits vs a sunny day outside mountain biking. I want to see a large scale and consensual agreement that blue light causes eye damage first and foremost (I'm aware it does cause sleep problems). I also look at and use warmer LED and florescent bulbs (I don't need 6500K studio lights - so I buy warmer (more red oriented) 4500K lights). I don't do things like take my phone to bed - give me a proper book thank you. On the other hand, I do have concerns with the HDR push (TV, computer screens, etc) that has requirements for screens hitting 1000 nits (or more) brightness, esp. since my eye's are light sensitive (thankfully most don't and the ones that do are rather pricey). My sunglasses are polarized and have the usual anti-glair coatings, etc. Don't see anything on my prescription for anything beyond a simple focal length correction. I do suffer on occasion dry eye, but I use drops to help with that.
I'm using 1.25D SPH weaker glasses for the computer (distance ~75cm / 29.5 inches), using a 27" 1440p monitor. I still see the screen clearly. I wish someone could have told me like 25 years ago to not use full prescription (I'm myopic with astigmatism) for close-up which would've reduced accommodation (it's a good thing to reduce). Better late than never I guess.
I'm "lucky" enough to have -1.25DS and -1.50DS. So I just wear...nothing behind my screens :-)) Just perfect for 65cm distance to screens, 8h per day, eyes totaly relaxed. When presbyiopia hits, I will just get lined bifocals, plano with some ADD for reading :-)
Simple answer: -0.25 or -0.50 dioptres relative to your Reading prescription depending on screen distance. I have -0.50 'added' to reading Rx for my triple screen and single 48 inch screen machines.
I will see an eye doctor because of this video. I didn’t know they could design glasses with just reading magnification on the bottom and no prescription on the top so that I don’t have to keep taking them off to look at objects from a distance. I only have a problem such as reading food product labels and looking at my iPhone screen from about a 12 inch distance which is what prefer. Thank you for the info.
I’m 48, have astigmatism, I am near sighted, having hard time seeing up close with my contacts or glasses on. I’m not sure if I need reading glasses or computer glasses. At the computer or reading long hours each day. Thank you for your video!!!!❤😊
I haven't been able to find a good pair of glasses. I have progressives with astigmatism and have no problem with everyday routine tasks. But I can't use them for the computer and instead use reading glasses for the computer screen. I haven't been completely happy with the results since I'm noticing that I'm leaning forward therefore causing incredible neck pain. The optometrist has recommended computer glasses so I'm going to try a pair. Fingers crossed.
You can go into Settings/Display/Night Light on your Windows computer and set the Night Light setting to ON. This will cause the screen to generate less blue light so no need to spend money blocking it. Same for your phone.
I am 45 and have myopia. I got computer lenses 5 years ago with a lower prescription than my distance glasses at -0.5 vs a -1.0. They worked for a while but now I have have both issues, near and far. So what would my computer glass have, a + or a - prescription?
My dad bought me a blue light lens specs as I study online due to this lockdown. Can I wear it while studying with books too?? And can I wear it while going outside for protection?🤔🤔🤔 Could you answer ♥️🙂
Yes, you can wear it while using books, and you can wear them outside as well. It would just be a question of how much protection it's actually providing outside. But it shouldn't hurt the eyes.
It seems like it should be possible to develop a variable power lens that could be programmed for an individuals various power needs then auto adjust using micro laser ranging.
I'm sure it's only a matter of time right now. Rumor has it that Apples new smart glasses can adjust focal point to accommodate for the individuals prescription. I'm super curious to see how well that works.
I am revovering from 3 eye surgeries one on left failed got damaged retina and the 2 on the right was removing optic nerve bone roofing. I went saw to optitians and they said my distnce hasn't changed but I do need reading glasses now. but no intermediate because distance intermediate was pretty much the same. so I reading reading glasses & normal transition lens distance ones and bought seperate set of of my first varifocals that optician told me try and the have transition with smallest distortions on both side. plus I am only 26 from the UK.
Hi I'm a CG artist and i have Astigmatism. i cannot find a link to your video about it in the description. I seat a lot of time and look at the monitors. I have no eye tiredness at all. If i use glasses for pc they are not hurt my eyes? maybe eyes be relaxed and when i remove them i have a loss in the picture quality? I'm sorry English is not my primary language. sorry for the poor grammar. btw no link appear when you point on top right screen corner :(
Thanks for telling me that. I put the link in the description, and in the video now. I thought I put it in there, but I must have never saved it. You can find it now. That is really good that you don't have any eye strain. Do you have a lot of astigmatism?
I'm so frustrated with my vision!! I have astigmatism and at 45 years old, recently got prescribed progressive lenses. They work fine for looking at my phone but they don't work for the laptop as I have to crank my head way back and then it's blurry if I look to one side of the screen or the other - it's only sharp in the middle and barely sharp at that. I just ordered what I thought were "computer" glasses - or intermediate as they were called but they still only work for my phone - they are super blurry for the laptop. I was prescribed 1.5+ for reading - so what should I order for laptop 24" distance?
Are the following 2 prescriptions essentially the same? A far-sighted 10-year-old with 2 diopters in both eyes. A 50-year-old with single-vision reading glasses with 2 diopters in both eyes. I mean, they both say +2.00 on the prescription.
I was wearing $2 +2D lenses but they seemed to refract a bit to much. Just picked up some 1.75's...for like 7 bucks and it's much better. Also, when multitasking (like reading a recipe and cooking) I can leave them on and they are much less uncomfortable (visually) than the 2 Diopter lenses.
Hello. Love your video. I am confused and need your help please. Just got my eye test for the very first time. I started to have problem seeing small letters like reading the instructions from a medication bottle. This prompted me to get my eyes check. I am 45 years old and my work requires me to be looking at computer screen for about 7 hours a day for 5 days a week. One prescription says: Final spectacle Rx (reading) RT +2.00, cylinder -0.50, axis 074, dist PD 31 LT +1.50, cylinder -0.25, axis 142, dist PD 31. Another prescription says: Final spectacle Rx RT +1.00, cylinder -0.50, axis 074, add +1.50, dist PD 31. LT +0.50, cylinder -0.25, axis 142, add +1.50, dist PD 31 Is it better to get a separate computer glasses and reading glasses or get the progressive glasses that have more computer glasses and bottom is reading? Is this progressive glasses also called office progressive? Also, would I need to get new prescriptions if I get a separate computer glasses, reading glasses or the progressive glasses? The doctor also did not ask me the distance from my eyes to the computer.
You doctor should be able to write you a specific computer prescription based on the distance of the monitor. You should be able to talk to them about progressives vs computer glasses and reading glasses. They may have specific progressives they can recommend.
I am still struggling with my progressive lens on computer then general use since its blurry everwhere I look and need to keep tuning in.... they say the brain just picks it up but i hate it so far
I will be 79 in Dec. I lost vision in left eye 40 yrs ago. Reading glasses have served me well. I have prescription glasses (not for reading.) About 6 mos. ago, something happened. My computer screen became too bright to look at so I can switch to 'high contrast and read things. However, I lose certain things like the line that shows what time your video is on & volume line. I have no contrast.. That is what I am looking for (like forensic lights & colored glasses. Where can I find these kind of products??? HELP! anyone Please. God bless you.
Doctor, I have a question. I am 30 years old. I have nearsightedness problem. My right eye is -2.50 and my left eye is -3.00. I accidentally changed to a job related to computers. 1, I need computer glasses, can computer glasses correct my vision on the computer? If yes, how does the answer help me? Will it completely fix my view on the computer? What kind of computer glasses should I use? For more information, I am using the sight glasses even though I don't use them all the time, but the sight glasses are not helping me on the computer, that's why I wanted the computer glasses. I hope that your advice and recommendations will help me and fix my computer vision once and for all. Thank you
sooo..... my optometrist appointment was last week. have a magnification of +1.00 suggested for each eye (i also have had regular prescription for decades. I asked if I should just get reader glasses for when I'm reading and using computer - rather than progressives - doctor agreed - said I could just order glasses with the magnification added. (full disclosure I ordered from an online store) just got the glasses and i had the readers on trying to read books etc and computer screen. started to feel a little sick/headachey. according to your chart in the description i'm confused if I should have different glasses for reading a book vs computer screen (there wasnt much of a difference there - especially since i'm just a +1 mag (i'm 46 years old). any tips for adjusting while still switching to my regular glasses for stuff away from monitor?! very confused.
Why not move the monitor closer to the reading distance? I only have one keyboard's width of space in front of me, and I don't need any glases. I might have broken my eyes when I was sitting like that near a computer around the age of 15. This length is now baked in. I see somewhat more poorly with distance glases. And big TVs are useless for me. I have a moderate distance glases as a compromise. The optometrist under-prescribed their power because they were my first and I was young.
You can have multiple prescriptions if you are looking for Single Vision glasses for a specific distance. Or if you are looking for a progressive lens that can cover all of those distances, you could just have one prescription for that.
Nice video sir, With my progressive glasses, I am not able to see customers during computer operating refer best Glass design for computer reading and some lone distance reading
@@DrEyeGuy Sir, I am reading without lenses, if I want to use progressive glasses I am using the bottom portion of the lens. Top portion using for distance.
If my prescription was Plano, 0.00 for both eyes with Single Vision Transition lense. Would that protect my eyes from computer and phone light ? I do have light sensitivity and dry eye that I'm treating with systane gel eye drops. But I'm always on my phone as well.
My prescription was for PL lenses that seem to only correct astigmatism. I chose intermediate lenses bc I primarily read on the computer. Would they be fine for book reading and general use as well? (30yr old)
i got my eyes checked. I'm trying to figure the numbers out. MY OD is -.25 -.25 130 (S, C, Axis). And there is an add of +2.25. In this example I want a pair or driving glasses and reading glasses. For reading glasses...Do I just add the "add" to the "S"? ie. reading glasses would be +2.00 -.25 130 (S, C, Axis)? Thx
@ Dr.Eyeguy. I work all day in front of Computer. Recently I got my annual eye testing done & I was told/examined that my power increased to +2.00 from +1.50(single vision only for reading). But after procuring new +2.00 glass I am not comfortable to see my computer with standard aprox.25 inches distance. This new glass is okay for reading but not at all suitable to work on computer. After analysis I found in an article that it is okay to go for one level low power glass which will suitable for both reading & to work on computer. I am in a confusion now to proceed further. Should I go for +1.75 or +1.50 as a common glass for both reading +computer OR start using +2.00 power glass for reading and bend myself forward :)) to work on computer. Please suggest. BTW I tried with Progressive lens which was not successful in my case.
I got a high power lenses +3.25 For both eyes but if I start reading with them for only 30 seconds they got blurry so I went to the store and get a very low power and I can read with them but I can’t see the computer. Should I go back to the clinic or I should get my computer glasses myself.
I got my first real vision exam ever at the tail end of last month at 31 and discovered I am mildly farsighted! My right eye is +1.00 and the left is +1.25 with a CYL of -0.5 and an axis of 82. The only other notation on the prescription is "SVL." How do I know if I need reading glasses, computer glasses, or both? Are computer glasses for the more intermediate distance something the doctor would have named or notated specifically if they would be helpful to me? Or is it something an optician will be able to help me work out?
Hi! Thanks for the question. "SVL" stands for "single vision lens". With your prescription and your age you could actually wear your glasses for everything: reading, computer, or even distance if you wanted to.
Dear doctor, I have spherical+cylindrical number in both of my eyes. Besides, I have astigmatism in my left eye due to which I have difficulty and discomfort while reading book. Please suggest what should I do? Though I am using prescription progressive glasses yet the near vision for reading is unsatisfactory in my left eye. Should I go for FEMTO Laser surgery or else?
Hi quick question I use vr a lot and have recently been diagnosed with borderline short sightedness. I have some people saying that vr can't damage my eyes at all but others say its bad so can it actually be causing shot sightedness or not. I've also been doing loads of online learning for school on a laptop during lockdown so could it be that. OK maybe that wasn't a quick question lol
These are all good questions. I covered it a little bit in this video if you haven't watched it already: th-cam.com/video/zR0y0LTmzT0/w-d-xo.html Right now I don't see any evidence that VR causes nearsightedness more than using phones or computer screens. Time will tell though.

You have the best questions. Yes, it can... having astigmatism can cause your eyes to continually adjust focus. Another thing to consider is a possible slight eye misalignment. This can cause your eyes to overwork at near, and cause trigeminal nerve dysphoria that can cause you to be dizzy and nauseous.
@@DrEyeGuy thank you! I just got astigmatism correction reading glasses for the first time and I noticed I wasn’t nauseous after reading. The words are so clear it’s truly a miracle.
Hello Urgent reply please. My age is 47 I am using bifocal spectacles for long distance as well as near distance. I have same powers for both the eyes( Left & right) L -2.25 (90 axis cylindrical) R -2.25 (90 axis cylindrical) ADDITION L +1.50 R +1.50 If i want to order separate computer glasses, what power should i select???
If you can measure the distance from your eyes to the computer screen. You can bring that to your eye doctor and get an exact prescription. They should be able to write a prescription without seeing you again as long as your current prescription is valid.
@@DrEyeGuy Alright. But is this true that the people with cylindrical number can't use single vision reading glasses separately? They will have to use bifocals only? I tried several single vision reading glasses but none of them worked for me!
@@SomNath-cm3jn Yes... the worse a person's astigmatism (cylinder correction) the less success they have with over the counter reading/computer/near glasses.

I hve +1.75i. Reading but is blurred with computers, they suggested using +1.5 instead. Do I need to buy 2?
I’m 48, have astigmatism, I am near sighted, having hard time seeing up close with my contacts or glasses on. I’m not sure if I need reading glasses or computer glasses.
At the computer or reading long hours each day.
Thank you for your video!!!!❤😊
Well explained. Thank you 😊
I haven't been able to find a good pair of glasses.
Usually you will move more in the plus (+) direction for near/computer vision.
My dad bought me a blue light lens specs as I study online due to this lockdown.
Can I wear it while studying with books too??
And can I wear it while going outside for protection?🤔🤔🤔
Could you answer ♥️🙂
Great information about the differences!
Thank you.
I use reading glasses when I have my contacts in and going to read more then a few minutes.
The best video on TH-cam regarding this topic. Thank you.
Thats good to hear. When you get the right power, even if it's 0.25 difference, it can really help.
One prescription says:
Final spectacle Rx (reading)
RT +2.00, cylinder -0.50, axis 074, dist PD 31
LT +1.50, cylinder -0.25, axis 142, dist PD 31.
Another prescription says:
Final spectacle Rx
RT +1.00, cylinder -0.50, axis 074, add +1.50, dist PD 31.
LT +0.50, cylinder -0.25, axis 142, add +1.50, dist PD 31
Is it better to get a separate computer glasses and reading glasses or get the progressive glasses that have more computer glasses and bottom is reading?
(full disclosure I ordered from an online store)
just got the glasses and i had the readers on trying to read books etc and computer screen. started to feel a little sick/headachey.
according to your chart in the description i'm confused if I should have different glasses for reading a book vs computer screen (there wasnt much of a difference there - especially since i'm just a +1 mag (i'm 46 years old).
any tips for adjusting while still switching to my regular glasses for stuff away from monitor?! very confused.
Do you need a multiple prescription for example single version, reading glasses, computer glasses? Or do you just need one prescription?
You can have multiple prescriptions if you are looking for Single Vision glasses for a specific distance. Or if you are looking for a progressive lens that can cover all of those distances, you could just have one prescription for that.
Nice video sir, With my progressive glasses, I am not able to see customers during computer operating refer best Glass design for computer reading and some lone distance reading
With your progressive lenses, are you looking through the top portion of your lenses when you look in the distance?
@@DrEyeGuy Sir, I am reading without lenses, if I want to use progressive glasses I am using the bottom portion of the lens. Top portion using for distance.
@@DrEyeGuy Top portion
I just got my line bifocals today!
If i want both for reading and computer what should i choose then
Superb lecture. Thank you Sir
I just got computer prescription glasses. Can progressive be added to creating reading depth after the fact?
No, unfortunately not. I would have to be a new pair of glasses, or you could possibly get your glasses remade into a progressive.
If my prescription was Plano, 0.00 for both eyes with Single Vision Transition lense. Would that protect my eyes from computer and phone light ? I do have light sensitivity and dry eye that I'm treating with systane gel eye drops. But I'm always on my phone as well.
When you say transition, are you meaning photochromic lenses that darker when you go outside?
@@DrEyeGuy Yes. That's correct.
My prescription was for PL lenses that seem to only correct astigmatism. I chose intermediate lenses bc I primarily read on the computer. Would they be fine for book reading and general use as well? (30yr old)
Yes, at your age, they would work just fine. Thank you for watching, and thank you for the question.
i got my eyes checked. Thx
Yep, you got it. Nice job.
Very helpful. May I ask if I have a prescription for reading glasses, how I choose the right one if I buy it online?. Thank you
Do you mean how do you choose the right frame? Or are you trying to buy simple reading glasses, "cheaters"?
I am not sure how to choose the glasses for reading and for computer (just one for both) ?
Thank you for this video💚
You're very welcome!
I would get your eyes checked by your eye doc, just to make sure you are getting the right ones you should be getting.
I'm under 40, +0.25 is fine.
Can I use this powered for both reading and computer?
Yes, that should work just fine for both.
Awesome video!
Thank you!
Excellent video.
Thank you! And thanks for commenting!
I covered it a little bit in this video if you haven't watched it already: th-cam.com/video/zR0y0LTmzT0/w-d-xo.html
Right now I don't see any evidence that VR causes nearsightedness more than using phones or computer screens. Time will tell though.
@@DrEyeGuy ok thanks

If you have astigmatism & you’re reading a lot without astigmatism correction glasses can that make you nauseous? Almost like motion sickness.
It's crazy what a difference it can make sometimes.
Thank you. 👩🏾🎨💜💜👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I should be thanking you more. You are always so nice to watch and comment on my videos.
Thank you so much 🙏
Do computer glasses make your eyes worse like reading glasses do.What can I use that wont harm my eyes further.
Prescription reading glasses for presbyopia won't harm your eyes. Same with computer glasses.
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you
thank you sir
I need to work on computer and mobile..... so progressive lens.
Hello
Urgent reply please.
My age is 47
I am using bifocal spectacles for long distance as well as near distance.
I have same powers for both the eyes( Left & right)
L -2.25 (90 axis cylindrical)
R -2.25 (90 axis cylindrical)
ADDITION
L +1.50
R +1.50
If i want to order separate computer glasses, what power should i select???
If you can measure the distance from your eyes to the computer screen. You can bring that to your eye doctor and get an exact prescription. They should be able to write a prescription without seeing you again as long as your current prescription is valid.
@@DrEyeGuy
Ok
Thanks
I was just wondering would it be a + glass or - glass?
@@SomNath-cm3jn I would depend on the distance... but likely it will be a + glass for your computer glasses.
@@DrEyeGuy
Alright.
Dr, It's me Alejandro, I was wondering a little thing, I think it happens to us all, When he left my glasses on my nightstand before bedtime clean them, But when waking up they are always dirty, To what can you owe this doctor? :(
So you go to bed and the glasses are clean, and when you wake up the glasses are dirty?
@@DrEyeGuy If doctor, I don't really know what is due, My glasses are metallic type without covering on the bottom of the lens “Floating glass”, Every night I use your fabric to clean them but the next day they are dirty again :(

Stop promoting progressive lenses, it is not for reading at ALL!
It ABSOLUTELY IS a lens design to help with both distance AND reading.
