As an Italian, I can say with enough confidence that when choosing the winner of San Remo's Festival almost nobody thinks about what song is better for Eurovision. San Remo is much more important to us than Eurovision so we choose the songs which are better for a San Remo victory only. It is a completely separate Festival celebrating Italian music tradition only, with no ties to Eurovision, differently from other countries who have their own national selections for this kermesse. That is why our winners have the option not to partecipate. Because they never sang to go to Eurovision in the first place. We stayed out of it for many years and it wouldn't surprise me if it happened again

The problem for the exams is that each state sings in its own language and in fact it's called Eurovision otherwise it would be called differently it would be a whole other thing

@@MatthGulins8555 the thing is the lyrics of this song are nothing new either. They're nothing ground breaking surely, are they? The song speaks about the obstacles in a relationship between 2 people who like each other.
I appreciate the poetry but with everything that is going on at the moment - the war, the post-Covid world we're in, the sinking economies, the far-right government in Italy, human rights, the mafia in Sicily, the job uncertainties, the lack of opportunities for young people, the cost of properties, the cost of food, etc. etc. - I'm not finding this song particularly meaningful either.
It's not like the message Marco Mengoni is trying to convey is that extraordinary. It's all sounding very generic, very bland, innocuous, extremely safe and protective. I like the song, don't get me wrong. But I'm not blown away either. I won't be downloading it. Will Italians be remembering it in 6 months from now? I very much doubt it.
      "Dovrei telefonarti
      Dirti le cose che sento
      Ma ho finito le scuse
      E non ho più difese"
      Thanks Marco, that's lovely lyrics.
      Next.

I'm Spanish and I've been following Sanremo from 5 years now. Every time someone here assumes the winner goes to Eurovision as if it was a national selection I have to explain them the whole thing, exactly what you've just said. Sanremo is such a unique festival and music is the most important thing, as it should always be. I admire you for that. The week of Sanremo is one of the weeks I look most forward to during the whole year and I'm sad now that it is over 🥲🥰

Have you ever noticed how Italian songs have always the problem that they need to cut a part to fit in the three minutes required by ESC? That's because NONE of them is written or submitted in Sanremo Festival thinking of Eurovision, because the important thing, to every artist, IS Sanremo. And that's why they can even choose not to participate in ESC or to participate with a different song. We are happy if we do well in ESC, but during Sanremo Festival nobody really cares.

I legit think the Italians are right if they don't care about Eurovision :)) They were underrated so many times and it's a wonder Maneskin eventually managed to win it. They are classes above other songs that finish above them, at this point Sanremo clearly has a higher level than Eurovision imo, and I'm not Italian. Sanremo is way more of a true song contest than what Eurovision came to be in the last 2 years. Eurovision is just hype and show contest lately.

Grazie ancora. ❤️🙏

Marco is one of the best singers here in Italy at the moment. Italy chose him as the Sanremo's festival winner not because of Eurovision (Sanremo is not held for ESC selection) but because he was the best of the competition. Eurovision is a plus in his career made of 2.8 million records sold in Italy. He peaked the Italian albums chart seven consecutive times and entered the Top 10 Italian Singles Chart fifteen times. Moreover he won the 3rd season of XFactor Italy, two TRL Awards, nine Wind Music Awards and nine MTV Italian Music Awards. He still has to decide what song to present at the ESC competition. I think he will do very well in any case because of his talent and extraordinary voice.

Sanremo and Eurovision are brothers, but they are different, like all siblings are. They were always different, even in early days (not all the chansons were equal, they had subgenres too). They were both born in Italy, but with different aspirations: the first was born to promote Italian culture, the second to reunite Europe with the power of music. Sanremo's main focus is on lyrics and voice, in Eurovision the major focus is on stage and visuals. Without a perfect voice for your musical genre or without a meaningful song, you won't ever win Sanremo (it's happened only a few times in weak editions), in Eurovision you can still win if you have stunning visuals. Do you Eurofans ever thought of why Italy overperforms in Eurovision? I have your answer. They came easily top 10 because their vocal performances and lyrics are strong. They already start with an advantage against other countries which should manage out to fit a stage to the song or the artists they chosen. They have nothing in common, literally, nothing, just the fact they are both song contests. But separate song contests: Sanremo isn't a National Final for Eurovision, is more an Italian Song Contest, indipendent from Eurovision. When Italy didn't participate in Eurovision, Sanremo was there, every year, one week a year. Not to select a song for Europe, but to select a song for Italy. That explains why it isn't a simple National final and why Eurofans might be frustrated to see what Italians choose as their winner. Because they choose their winner, not what they think Europe may crown as a winner.

You've got a perfect analysis. It is exactly what you've said.
But, considering what is happening in the last times, because of the recent trends ruling today's musical "market" or "industry" 🤔 (i'm sorry, but I'm not able to explain it in other terms) and also ruling in many Eurovision kind of songs, I'm afraid (and i'm suspecting) this is already begin to influence and change (unfortunately in a negative way) the kind, and genre of music that we make. And the risk is "conforming" the style of the songs, getting lower quality songs, with loss of personality, charisma, melody, and so many other things on what Italian music is known about.
And this, in order to serve the discographic industry, to sell more, and more quickly.
So the result is going to be like so many more flat and meaningless songs, maybe catchy, maybe easy listening, but easy forgettable, and poor of quality. Even Sanremo is beginning to lose its quality and beauty with choosing songs that are no more good as some years ago (and i'm referring at not so many years ago, actually).
Marco is one of the few good artists that still can resist, (and Luckily he won!!! 🥳🥳) but we are already invaded by "artists" singing every stuff, which are chosen dispite of the real good songs from good artists, which we also have.
      What a sadness 😢😢😢

      Era questo che intendevo dire.

Try to understand these basic concepts: 1) Sanremo doesn't serve to bring out the champion for the ESC (which we care very little about). 2) Italians love well written lyrics, well done arrangements and beautiful voices. 3) Maneskin were a parenthesis, usually, if we look at ESC, it's to smile at tacky performances, poor lyrics and bad choreography.

It's an italian power ballad. Italian ballads are about expressing emotions, in this case the self-healing and the rage of a man that judges the many mistakes in his life. You always expect something revolutionary from Italy and then always fall in love with the average dancy/rocky song made by the latest international queenie joining ESC. Do you make the same questions to those singers who have been singing the same ole uninventive dance or rock song for the last ten years? In this sanremo you could listen to great groove and beats like Elodie, Madame, Rosa Chemical, Lazza, gIANMARIA and they all sound great and contemporary, but get over it, italians have their tastes and they have a soft spot for power ballads THAT is the style we created in the early 60es with songs like "io che non vivo/You don't have to say you love me". Power ballads are known to be raw and raging and soft, shouty and raw again. That's what italian passion is about. Would you say to any contemporary soul singers that they are predictable only because they sing a style that has been a household genre since the early 60es? Do you really consider Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith or maneskin innovative? Just asking....

Forse così riusciremo a limitare i danni...

    Anyway thanks for your video.
Marco is the most beautiful male voice we have in Italy, he is known as a very sweet, sensitive and emotional guy, which makes him even more special. During the Festival he had a fever and sinusitis, despite this he sang wonderfully! ❤️
The songs presented in Sanremo are meant to be the best Italian song and not for Eurovision, where a different style often prevails (funny/trash songs), but this is real music and he could win. The song is about the inner conflict we all struggle with, that's why he feels the song very much in his heart while singing it. The text speaks of two parts of the same person, the conscious and the unconscious that talk to each other, the life of dreams that collides with that of reality (just "Due vite", "two lives").
Truly a deep and emotional meaning, a beautiful music that together with the text take the audience into a dreamlike scenario. Furthermore Marco is an excellent interpreter, this makes the difference and makes this song perfect, because he transmits all the emotions to the audience that watches and listens to him, even to a foreign audience that does not understand the Italian language and this says everything about what a great artist is Marco.

@@chrisperry5365 Thank you 🙏 Everyone has their own tastes but associating Marco with that face with that expression she put in the video is just propaganda. Marco is defined by the experts as an alien because his technique is perfect, he manages to do things with his voice considered very difficult for a human being, and all the other videos of foreigners who review this song say the same thing, they cry, get emotional, have the creeps, they say it's impossible to change his voice like he does, from acute to heavy, and instead in this video she says that he screams 😂 that's why I also wrote another comment in which I said that either this girl doesn't understand anything about music , or is just doing propaganda, and I had put the links of the experts who analyzed the song, but she has deleted my comments more than once, and maybe she will delete this too. It's one thing to prefer another genre or think that a song is not suitable for Eurovision trash because it's a song on a higher level and of a different style, and another thing to say technically wrong things about singing and put that expression while talking about the best singer we have in Italy. Among other things, foreigners often get confused about one thing, the others make songs based on Eurovision, the Italians instead do it for Sanremo and to elect the best Italian song, for us Eurovision is just one more thing. Sanremo is the father of Eurovision because they were inspired by our festival which has been around for many years before. This is a musical culture that the girl in the video doesn't know.

@@Io88888 I agree with what you said, though I don't think unsatisfactory reactions like this one are ill intended. Everyone has their own personal tastes even when it comes to objectively good songs (like Due vite). But yeah, the Eurovision mindsets such as having biases towards bop or ethnic or quirky songs regardless of how good they are then having a bias against "safe" songs or ballads (there's also a lot of misandry in the fandom especially when it comes to male ballads - everybody loves Alika's ballad but they hate on Marco's and Greece's, Switzerland's and Cyprus' ballads) is really annoying and insulting towards those artists and how they choose to express their artistry. I love Eurovision for how diverse it is, but I hate that part of the fandom who thinks they support diversity when in fact they just want every country to send a circus act.

@@chrisperry5365 Exactly, but I don't dispute her musical taste but the lack of understanding of music if you say that an artist like Marco is wrong because he screams, in a point of the song where everyone gets excited and the experts describe a beautiful and very difficult change of voice, praising his technique. Furthermore, I repeat that the face he put on the cover of the video is propaganda, because when there is such a good artist with such beautiful music you cannot put that expression which is not objective, even if you prefer music of a lower and more trashy. The foreigners I've heard love Italian ballads, because they indicate them as a higher level of music, as art. Evidently there is a part of the fandom that, as you say, loves trash, but even if they prefer another genre they must remain objective on the quality of what they are listening to, otherwise they look like those who don't know about music, like video girl.

Here nobody cared about this contest excepting for the few eurofans. We mostly thought it was trash music. But since Euphoria won, everything changed. It became a huge international hit and yet, Spanish ESC delegation didn't care at all and we've been sending trash for many years with no expectations or support from the national public. Mengoni's song & singing were just too powerful not to win Sanremo. In Sanremo, you have to have everything, good lyrics included. OK, I speak Italian, it is amazing how much more you get if you understand what the song is about, given that lyrics are seldom shallow. Having said that, several other songs would have done better in Liverpool but that's OK. There is only one winner but Eurovision is about exposure, it's a chance to promote the artist and the country. For example, Konstrukta got lots of fans and worldwide recognition last year, something she could have only dreamed of, so I am sure she is pretty happy. Mengoni is guaranteed to get new fans too, and Europe gets another taste of Italy, even though it is not likely that this song will win. BTW, he'll have to shorten it by 30 seconds or so.

There are still people around who think that Sanremo is a musical competition to elect the song to be sent to Eurovision, maybe they don't know that the winning artist can refuse to compete for the ESC!

FYI Marco and his team are thinking of changing the song to bring to Eurovision. They might use another bc there's nothing against this in the rules of Sanremo. They also know this isn't a Eurovision type song, I personally would have liked Lazza to win but Marco is a phenomenal singer and in any case I don't think he cares much for ESC. May is far so this isn't a priority

Yeah I got the same reaction. Mengoni has a wonderful, wonderful voice, but Every song's like his other songs, the "classic italian ballad". However I'm curious cause he just said yesterday evening that he might not bring Due Vite at the Eurovision..let's see! Thanks for the reaction :3

I think one of the most common mistake that has often been made when determining the winner of Sanremo is choosing the singer and not the song. I mean, Mengoni has a beautiful voice, objectively, ok, and everyone talks about how good of a singer he is. But I've heard almost no one talking about how good this song was. It just sounds like any other Italian ballad, I agree.

Hello, I am Italian, when I first listened to this song it really didn't do anything for me. The day after it came up on a random playlist and since then I can't get it out of my head! I really, really like it. Maybe it's not immediate, which isn't great for Eurovision, but definitely worth listening to it a couple of times. P.S. although it's in my language I still haven't paid any attention to the lyrics. Ciao

I don't watch the reaction because I see your face on the thumbnail and it's not promising. Additionally I read some of the comments and I already understand here we have the same problem. Foreigners who don't know the Festival of Sanremo. Think it is the national selection, but it's not. The italian ballad is the typical italian genre. We probably invented it, considering Sanremo started in 1951 while Eurovision started in 1956, based on an idea of an italian, Mr. Pugliese. So Italy is the father of Eurovision. If you don't like this song, note Marco Mengoni can interpret whatever genre of music. He has a flexible voice, incredible voice range and crazy interpretation skills. And puts a lot of emotions when he sings. To know his vocal skills, just check his interpretation of Let It Be, performed on friday evening in the Sanremo duets and cover night, with the Kindgom Choir. You can find it on YT, in the RAI channel. Concerning Sanremo, for us is like the father and the mother together. While Eurovision is the cousin of 2 degree. We care only about the music, the vocal skills, the emotion, the capacity to involve the audience and transmit feelings. We don't care about the fakeness of all the presentation seen in Eurovision, the special effects, the props on stage. Etc.

actually we invented the "power ballad" style in 1965 with Pino Donaggio "Io che non vivo senza te". Ballads were sung around the world but in the typical "love me tender" style.
