    So ProRes RAW *can* be output at 1080p! Everything I've seen up to now only mentioned 4K. I'll be sending my camera away in mid January and I guess I'll be ordering more 6TB hard drives. I really appreciate the work that Atomos and Nikon have put in to give us this powerful feature for the Z cameras.

    Z6 is the only full frame camera under 10k capable of capturing RAW video, but not only under 10k even with the upgrade and the Ninja V it's under 3k. Crazy amount of power for that price.

    Grateful that this is finally being delivered!!! Bought the Filmmaker’s kit in Feb in anticipation but I am worried when all demo (like Apple hyping its iPhone 11 Pro Max) feature dialogue-LESS sampling with Hit or Music...
    So, are there any issues with sync’ing up audio with the HDMI delay of recording to the Ninja V? I’m going to be using a Zoom F4 and write the Time Code to the Z6 but I’m a little muddy on his the Video being transferred from the camera to the Ninja remains sync???

If I switch to any other codec, the record button works fine. I'm not sure what's going on. The SSD drive I'm using is not Atomos, it's a WD. But, I can still record with it on the other codecs. RAW is great editing to Nikon Z system, but some more support for software would be appreciated. Hope the support comes for Resolves soon. There needs to be a support for Resolve, because that is the color grading tool of choice for many users and having access to this footage makes most sense for grading, not editing. FCPX is Mac only so that is somewhat limiting and premier is not as a good for grading, which again this footage is worth it. You need extra data for color grading not editing.

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not here to defend Nikon, but we don't know. It may be an additional chip on the mobo, or an activation in the firmware that gives them some additional revenue. As Nikon service centers in many countries are actually not Nikon owned but an outsourcing vehicle under Nikon flag, it does not help Nikon whatever they are doing. My guess of what is happening, compared to a PC, is a BIOS upgrade. What we call the camera's firmware is actually a bundle of operating system, drivers, applications and services. If we move over to a real PC, upgrading data or software in eprom chips like BIOS, but also in the minicomputers in e.g. SSD, require special software or boot procedures to be able to do that. Generally, you cannot update BIOS from inside Windows, albeit there are some steps that could be taken in a Windows UI, like installing a new BIOS copy in unused BIOS memory and setting a flag to load that as replacement of the BIOS that is used to boot the motherboard/computer. If such provisions are not built-into the camera's FW (i.e. OS, apps, svcs and drivers) nor its hardware, then you need to do it with a special maintenance arrangement.
      As to the film-kit version of the Z, the way I understand it, that does not have the capability installed either, just the upgrade has been payed for upfront.
      How digital works. Not defending it.
      I run workstations with their SSDs in RAID mode where the RAID level is offered by the motherboard's chipset. Without RAID mode, I can update any SSD's firmware with the vendor's tool, in Windows, during Windows. When drives are used in RAID mode, I can't, as the chipset puts a definition layer over the hardware- and you cannot do one drive at a time without bugging the RAID set. In this case, I need to shut the computer down, take each drive out, update the firmware individually, hope no data are damaged, place the drives back, and rebuild the array, where the array management software may, or may not, review data integrity and repair accordingly. That is not as exciting as inventing a conspiracy theory that Nikon does nothing but stealing your money. After decades of prof Nikon use, I have to say that the past 7 years have shown a couple moments of "if you do that, you don't need enemies" and it is not even likely they had come up with such a plot.

    • @TaipeiGeek
      @TaipeiGeek 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're adding a small human on the motherboard who presses an ON switch for the RAW function every time you press record. Nikon service centers have a shrinking machine, hence you can't just update the firmware to get this feature.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2.20 firmware is needed but the modification needed in addition is a change to the HDMI board.$200 is what the US charges but it can be different in other countries. My local Nikon service center said it takes a day and most of that is the cleaning and checking calibration operation after reassembly and it is a lot less than what the Nikon USA charges.
