    Hey thanks for this review. I've been tossing up getting the Mmmbop or maybe a Marley. So always good to hear more real opinions.
    So glad to hear it's fun on flatter trails, as my concern was it was only fun when speed or gradient got turned right up. And that would have been a killer since a lot of my trails are flatter ( grade 4 or 5).
    Good to know about the origin of the name too! Although that song has a special place in my heart ❤️

    I like reviews based on stock first, because essentially that’s what you get when you slap the credit card down and nearly shit yourself over how much you just paid for stock. By the time we upgrade our bikes we nearly double our costs. I have heard great things about the Ragley so I imagine it’s a solid stand alone bike. Thanks for the review!

      In a lot of ways I feel that the stock build is better than my custom build, so I'm confident that the stock Mmmbop is ridiculously good and a great deal for the money. Thanks for the comment!

      That's a bummer; hopefully you can get one on the next round they stock them back up. The good thing is that you have a Nukeproof Scout; which is an awesome bike! I don't know if you care about the frame material, or extra cost, but they do have the Blue Pig frames in stock. I'm hoping I can get my hands on a Blue Pig to do a side-to-side comparison with the Mmmbop; just to see the differences between steel and aluminum. Thanks for the comment!

    Got a 2020 on a 160mm Lyrik ultamite
    27.5 2.8s on bontrager line comp 40s on rapid drive 108 POE hub
    Cushcore plus
    Code R
    Spank 777 50 mm riser
    All GX
    Absolute black oval
    ( a must )
    The bike is a blast ridden over 2K miles mostly single track and blue / black trails
    It’s a magnificent climber ! But you need to attack the climbs
    If you granny gear the climb then your gonna zig zag once you fatigue .
    It’s a full sus slayer on everything except extra rocky rock gardens at speed , but if you slow down a bit it’s still easy .
    As for other HTs
    I have ridden everting from steel to titanium and to be honest the MmmBop is special for the $$$$$
    The RSD middle child is a blast to .
    I’m a fellow Cali rider ( Pasadena area )
    No need for a full sus anymore :)
    Enjoy the bike man
    And play with some 2.8s you won’t look back

      It’s hard but I have a 2/3 k climb a few miles from my pad , and as I upgraded and changed parts I kept trying different things. I’m a 200 pounder and 54 so it’s a bitch lol
      Also getting the right Psi ha been huge ( ranges from 17-20 psi ) give the bike different personalities .
      I had a Yari ( loved it ) but my friend hooked me up with the lyrik damper .
      It got smoother but the Yari is fine . 4 pot brakes were a must to stop my big ass on long steeps lol .
      So the build was out of necessity over time .

  • @madcapper6

    The frame looks very similar to the Marley. I'm guessing the Mmmbop's 63.75 head tube angle is gonna be a tad slacker than the Marley. Is that the only difference? Other than that, the frame design, the shape of the hydroforming on the tubes, the disc brake mount, dropouts, all look pretty similar.

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is a very similar looking frame but there are quite a few differences. On top of the headangle being slacker, the stack height is taller (so the front end sits higher), it has more reach, the seat angle is steeper, and it's much longer. It doesn't sound like a big difference but it does change the character of the bike. I used to own the Ragley Piglet (steel version of the Marley) and the way it rode was very different than the Mmmbop. Both bikes are equally awesome, it's just a matter of which one suits your style. Thanks for the comment!

      Thank you and congratulations on getting one, especially at a discount. I should have the mullet video out in about two weeks or so, I'm still trying to get more footage. I'm actually running a 160mm on the mullet setup, which is overforking the bike, but it is amazing. @BikeHombre  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!! I think you’ll be fine with the 170mm fork. I’ve read on forums about people who did a 170mm fork on their Mmmbops and they didn’t report any issues. Just that it slackened the bike a bit more and made the bike even more capable on steep downhills. I’m actually contemplating running a mullet setup (160mm 29 in front) just for fun to see how crazy it would be to ride. If you decide to put in the 170 let me know how it rides!

      @@BikeHombreThanks for the reply. . Got a 170mm Zeb which is taller than a 170 Lyrik. Like 586mm ATC. Rides really well to be honest. Climbs well for the fire road to dh that I do. Use Mallet Dh pedals and you can charge really hard with it, forget about feet being blown off and it does really well throwing it into rock gardens and some sections of Ft William DH. Definitely notice the fork stiffness and front end being way more controlled. My carbon 27.5s just about holding up. I may drop the Zeb travel to 150 and see how it does.

    Awesome video, with the pricing and parts released for the 2022 where I can get it for $2700 all in, how would you consider the 1.0 build vs a RSD Middlechild Chromo SX level $2900. I don''t know why it's so hard for me to just get the MmmBop over the RSD, but the frame versatility and purple steel just have that je ne sais quoi that I keep staring at.

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a tough one because I adore the RSD and the purple color is just stunning. The main thing that the Mmmbop has over the RSD in builds in my opinion is the drivetrain is better. I personally have never used SRAM SX, but I have friends who had them on their bikes and that's the first upgrade that they did. Also, are the brakes; I'm not a huge fan of the Level T's, but I've also never used the new SRAM DB8s (but I've heard good things about them).
      So here's something to think about as well. I just looked at the Chain Reaction website and the Mmmbop 1.0 is 30% off and all sizes are available; and at that price it's hard to beat that bike. BUT, if you really want a steel frame take a look at the Ragley Blue Pig Race, which is the steel version of the Mmmbop and it comes with a Rockshox Lyrik, SLX/XT drivetrain, SLX 4 piston brakes and Nukeproof Horizon wheels. And conveniently it's also 30% off as well.
      The main thing is that the RSD has the versatility of being able to run both 27.5+ and 29 wheels and RSD does let you choose purple. The way I look at it, parts can always be upgraded but you have to be happy with the bike itself and never have the thought "Maybe I should have bought that other bike instead". For me personally, I love my Mmmbop and there are times after washing it and it's sitting outside, I just stare at it in awe as it glistens in the sunlight. It's that specialness that I think we all look for in a bike. Even though this is a Mmmbop video and I should be saying "Get the Mmmbop!!"; it sounds like the RSD is the one tugging at your heartstrings. So for that reason, I would get the RSD.
      But regardless of which hone you choose, let me know which one you buy and how you like it once you get a couple of rides in. Thank you for the comment and good luck!

    • @ShortGuac
      @ShortGuac ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BikeHombre Dude thank you so much for the breakdown. I don't really think much of my components once I'm out and about, but the amount of people that have issues with SX is just too great to look over for myself. I think I'll get the Blue Pig as it's even cheaper on sale than the MmmBop and as a heavier rider, I don't want to wince everytime I take a drop or case a jump for now. I figure I can always buy the frame on a sale and just swap the parts over anyways if I'm still looking at the RSD later on. Thanks again for your help in deciding! I'll edit this once I've taken it on a few rides.

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    is 160 up front spec? I wonder what less travel might do to steepen hta and seat tube Angle for a slight boost with climbing... ?

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The stock build comes with a 150mm fork, but the Mmmbop can run anything from a 140mm to a 160mm without any problems. I don't mind the climbing since the bike descents so well. I might make a video with a fork with less travel to test out the theory though. Thanks for the comment!

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to own the Piglet, which is the steel version of the Marley. The differences between the two aren’t huge, but they do make a difference. The Mmmbop has a higher front end, is longer, slacker, lower, and just more aggressive.
      I think the Piglet is an amazing bike, but I felt like I was able to reach the limit whereas I haven’t hit the limit of the Mmmbop yet.
      If you want a super aggressive hardtail I think you should go for the Mmmbop. But if you want a bike that climbs a little better, it still insanely fun to ride, but it’s just not quite as capable then I would go for the Marley.
      Either way, I think they both are great bikes. Thanks for the comment and let me know which one you’re going to buy!

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@infernokush4206 I would go with the bike based on the trails you’re going to ride it on. If you like the rougher, steeper, technical terrain then go for the Mmmbop. If it’s going to be less chunky trails then I’d go with the Marley.
      But since you had a downhill bike, I assume you like a bike that rips; which in that case I’d go Mmmbop. To me the ultimate hardtail ripper is what I did to my Mmmbop. I converted it to a mullet and it’s unstoppable. I’m actually working on getting the footage to make a video on it right now, but as a mullet the Mmmbop still pedals good, it’s still a blast to ride, and the downhill is unreal.
      Also, can you test ride each bike and figure out which one you like better? If you can do that, but I think you’ll lean towards the Mmmbop

    • @BikeHombre
      @BikeHombre  ปีที่แล้ว

      My frame is a Medium and I am 5'10", so I actually am between sizes as well. I tend to like by bikes on the smaller side and then add 38mm riser bars to make the front a little higher. If you like bikes on the bigger size with a higher front end then I would size up. But if you like a more playful bike, then I would size down. For 2023, there are changes to both the Mmmbop and Marley; the main is that they are only sold frame only. I actually did a video detailing everything for the whole Ragley line-up, here's the link:

      I think that the Commencal is a great choice as well. Everything I’ve read is the Commencal is an amazing bike. I wouldn’t worry about riding on the street with the Mmmbop. It pedals really well and it’s the bike I always use when I ride around with my daughter. Since it’s a hardtail it still puts power down really well. When you ride mountain trails are they steeper or more mellow? If it’s more mellow, I think the Commencal is a solid choice. But if it’s steeper trails then I would choose the Mmmbop just because how capable it is. My old hardtail had a 65.5 degree head angle (Commencal has a 65) and I could feel a dramatic difference between that and the Mmmbop (63.75 degrees). The Mmmbop has more front end grip and is lower, so it just rails corners better. Both are winners.
