I remember my brother bought a red 72' GS with the 350, black vinyl top auto, console, Cragars, and a few whiskey dents & almost zero brakes for $200.00 back in the mid 80's It hauled a$$.

I grew up near Schenectady and my neighbor(Carl) had a 1970 GS 350-Green. Built a GSX clone. Paint color was red with the black stripe. Not sure where the 455 power plant came from, but do remember he sent the motor to a builder by the name of Kenny Bell. I was younger than my neighbor and was just getting into muscle cars at that time. Anyway- he took me for a ride when he got it back and those bias ply tires had no chance at all. The car hauled ass. At 40mph he’d put his foot into it and the
car would try to go straight but the tires would break loose and step out sideways. Anyway- great cars and stories Scott had. Thanks for sharing, which brought up some good memories.

Kenne-Bell. Pop Kennedy and Jim Bell. Old-school Buick racers who began building all-out performance parts. I think they gave it up, maybe 15 years ago and went to superchargers and Mustangs. If Kenne-Bell built it, it must have been a monster.

Ya, it was 1987 or 88 when he put the car together so the Bell family was probably neck deep in Buicks still. Thanks for the back round on the Bell’s. 👍

And most of it was well deserved. They had horrible oiling issues and there are ways to pretty much eliminate it by enlarging oil holes which increased oiling to the front crank bearings. But being that they all burned up originally before anyone knew about that mod, there are very few S1's with their original engines.

In 1971 my mother bought a Buick GS and asked them to badge it as a Skylark as she wanted it to handle well. It was stratomist blue metallic with an arctic white top with a black interior and a bench seat. It was my driver and she navigated everywhere we went. Like camping etc. Man what a car! It was a 350 automatic with power disk brakes and a posi rear end, and dual exhaust.

I was privileged to start a lot of races when I was 16 around 1987 it waxed an LS seven short block rectangular port headed four speed 55 Chevy that was tubbed the Buick pull the front left wheel off the ground, we had a garage that was my uncle 60s GM dealership this boy Dad worked there was a mechanic. They ran 1000 CFM Thermo quad on it into this. It is the baddest muscle car I’ve ever seen and I’ve been around quite a few monsters.

I wonder if the missing bench seats in all the 72's is because of the strike on GM that year, I know it affected lots of parts through the divisions.

The 1971 and 1972 GSX's were also available with a 350 and there were 3,764 cars that came with the N-25 rear bumper option in 1971 and 1972.

    • @scottscars4153
      @scottscars4153 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@brettslater872 True but surprising to many about the 350 powered GSX's. Being mainly a trim package,
they do carry a lot of stature on the collector market. Did you get a chance to check out the 2 GS455 verts I have in my video. They are 2 of 165 in 1971 total production. 1971 doesn't have the Buick records base that the other years do, to totally break them down by color and options.

    • @brettslater872
      @brettslater872 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@scottscars4153 I saw those two '71 convertibles and it's a shame they're buried in that barn and not being enjoyed and driven as intended.
The breakdowns as they relate to color and options only go so far. For instance: my black '70 Stage 1 4-speed at 1:37 of the video, where you're talking about A-Bodys, is 1 of 664 produced at Buick's Flint, MI plant. (not Detroit) In fact, all 1970 Stage 1 and GSX cars were built at the Flint plant - or Buick City, as it was commonly referred to.
664 is the number for the Stage 1 4-speeds for that year and that's all we know and this is based on the Daily Car Reports from Buick, which I have right in front of me. There's no color or option breakdown beyond that.
As for the Gulfstream Blue GS convertibles produced in 1970: 44 were made in Flint, 13 at Leeds in KC and 4 at the Fremont plant in CA. All GS ragtops were 455 cars and there's no info beyond that as it relates to colors or option loads, much less how many came with white interiors/tops, aside from how many were Stage 1's. I wish there was but unfortunately, there isn't. Also, 625 convertibles came out of the 3 previously mentioned production plants with white tops and that's all we know.
We also know that Buick didn't paint their brake parts red. Ever. Whoever did that probably did it sometime in the mid '70's, as that was popular during that time. It appears you have a great and rare car there and I hope you intend on restoring it or at least cleaning it up and making it roadworthy. It would definitely be a fun cruiser. Should you decide to, feel free to reach out and I'll help you get it back to looking and appearing as correct as possible.
Check out my channel for some more info on the black Stage 1, too.

It always cracks me up when these classic car hoarders keep quoting build numbers and options until eventually their car is a 1of 1, or a 1 of 3, super rare car car because it was the only one made in a particular color with some obscure option like left hand threaded valve caps or something to that effect.

As a young guy, I had a '69 400 GOAT (my avatar), and later a '71 455 HO GOAT. The '71 was a special order for the dealer's wife which explained the white vinyl top I removed. A true HO with every option available. The '69 was a neck-snapper, while the '71 was more of a powerful cruiser. Thank the EPA for that, the malaise era began then. Also, the '71 got 9 mpg for a little _less_ oomph. Verdict? I'll take the '69 any day.
Also. I worked on head subassembly at Chrysler in '75 while at University. There were 4 of us. I had the '69 GOAT, and the others had: a '68 HEMI Charger, a '69 383 Road Runner, and, dear Lord, a '74 gto. It's UNcapitalized because it had the guts of a 6-cyl Nova. IMHO, real GOATS were '64 to '71. Great video!

I had a 1971 Buick skylark convertible same color as the gs it was all original it was a bench seat with black interior. It had a dime sized hole in the bottom of the passenger side front fender and other than that no sheet metal damage or rust the top didn’t leak it was a low mileage car. Sold it to a guy in knoxsville tenn and he wrote me a check and closed his account before I could cash the check so he stole it from me. I still have my bill of sale with the vin on it I really would love to get it back. But never will. I drove it for a couple of years and it was a great car.

I’m quite positive that red and white boat is an Arkansas Traveler 14’ Runabout. I fully restored a 1964 that had the lapstrake hull. Loved that thing!! I put a 1970’s Mercury Classic 50 on the back and it zipped around at just over 35mph. Great little vintage boat!!👍🏻😎👍🏻

I had the "Pea Picker" & my headlight worked by putting the gear against the front tire. As it spun the little generator powered the light.

Good job on the video. That guy has a very nice collection and a lot of good information, but when he named the A bodies, he left out the Monte Carlo, which was also a mid size car that shared a lot of parts with the Chevelles. They were also available with the same LS5 454 that the Chevelles had.

I had a 1970 GS 455, gold w/brown vinyl top. Auto, bench seat. Got it in 72 used. Car was a rocket. In 1974 I almost bought a 1970 GS Stage 1, White, White interior, 4 speed manual trans for $2,000.00 in Piedmont Ca. I test drove but It was more than I had, I only had $1,800. That car was fast. The guy was firm on the price. I passed...ugh.😭

My 1970 Buick GS455 convertible has been sitting in my garage for 30 years.
Unfortunately I currently don't have the money or the time to do this rare muscle car true justice. It needs someone who does have the ability and the funds to restore it's proper glory

Be nice to see that 70 Buick GS convertible restored. I had a nice Red 72 Skylark that we put a nice Hefty 455 when we finished it up 462 stage 1 Kenny Bell equipped. It's up in Michigan last i seen it was 2010. My buddy Vern had it. He passed away in 2012. Not sure what happened to the car.

Nice trip down memory lane. I had a 70 GS 350 back in the 80's, it seriously had all 410-whatever lb/ft of torque for which it was rated thanks to the pre-emission almost 11:1 compression. Later I built a 70 Skylard into a Stage 1 "tribute" that would fool most unless you noticed the 12 bolt rear. It was another one that surprised folks at the drag strip, it looked for all the world like a meticulously restored 13 second car but it ran low 11's all day long. That was stout 30+ years ago lol.

The actual torque rating was 510 lbs/ft.
Had a friend who worked at a full service station back in 85’ just off the Interstate. A guy came in with a 70’ GS Stage1. Black, auto column shift, w/tan interior and a bench seat. He bought it for $1800! It was an original car in really great condition. He ended up ragging the whole car out. Wrecks, dents, and then engine damage. He took the engine to a machine shop and never picked it up! That car today in the condition he bought it would be worth north of $100k!
Fun fact. We coincidentally lined up with a guy from HS who had a 65’ Vette 396 4sp convertible. My buddy wasn’t a good driver. And the Vette got a 1-car length hole shot. But we started pulling him and caught him around the 400’ and coasted to the next night. They looked over and asked “what kind of Cutlass is that”? I said it’s a Buick! They loudly asked “a Buick”? I asked if they wanted to run again? They said “nope”! Hahaha

Had a 75 Buick Gran Sport.
    I know I know
Last year, just an appearance package at that point.
Silver body with the yellowish stripes, and the Silver interior.
350 Auto. Probably the best working car I had or years.
Like everything in the area rusted out bad.
Sold it to a salvage yard for scrap, he cut the roof off and used it for a yard vehicle, torches and tool box. Ran for years, always just touch the key and it was running.

    The Gremlin brought me back.
My cousin had the Gremlin in green and my sister had the Hornet in green. We hit a deer with the Hornet. My dad was a welder. He grabbed a grill from 1/8" x 1/2" flat bar and expanded metal. Good times😂

my first car to drive as a kid was my stepfathers 61 Buick Invicta. it had a 455 balanced and blueprinted motor in it so my stepdad took the wheel weights off the tires so it would start wheel hopping at 90 miles per hour haha. he probaly saved my life lol. that car weighed like 5500 pounds but once you got it cruising would go 160 all day.

I always wonder where it ended up, it was in Millis, MASS. where it was, and man alive was that thing fast!!

Always loved Stage 1 for uniqueness. Interesting how often the phrase “Holy Grail” mentioned. My definition probably differs from others. For example, the only 1968 Z28 convertible in existence in dark green exemplifies the phrase.
