- The Atlanta Falcons shocked the world and their starting QB Kirk Cousins by drafting Michael Penix Jr. 8th overall. Colin Cowherd says it’s better to be QB-heavy than QB-light, and believes that J.J. McCarthy will be a perfect fit for the Minnesota Vikings, and Drake Maye will struggle with the New England Patriots.

Disagree - they are devoting something like 15% of their cap space this season alone, and a ton more next year, to a single position out of 22. That doesn't mean it won't work out, but the probabilities, ie Moneyball, are not in their favor. The cap limitation (and dead money in the future) is the part that people need to be talking about here.
The Falcons arent paying anybody right now. Kirks deal is up in 2 years. The only contract they need to sign in the next 2 years is AJ Terrell and thats it.
No one hates JJ McCarthy as much as Colin.

Now we have an insurance plan in place to take care of our team for years to come. I fully trust GM Terry and Coach Raheem and the process...LET'S GO FALCONS!!!
Cousins is mercenary. You get what you give.
The move makes no sense from a financial standpoint because signing Kirk means you're in win now mode and you need impact players to make up for his salary. Basically, the Falcons are telling you they're building the team for 3 years from now.
The Falcons have PLENTY of cap space they are only paying 6 guys right now. Kirks deal is up in 2 years when Pitts needs his contract
Their bright idea is to win now and in the future lol. With Kirk, they hope to win enough to make the playoffs and obviously lose. Then when that little era ends, seamlessly move into the Penix era and do some real hardcore winning.
Right but the difference between this and the Favre, Rodger’s, Alex Smith situation is that those QBs were already on the team and under contract, the Falcons JUST signed Kirk to a massive contract

Colin, when the Vikings traded for Dobbs, they did so because, at the time, Hall was the only uninjured QB on the depth chart--Mullens wasn’t available for the Falcons game due to injury. So, they needed to trade for Dobbs to have a backup to what was their third-string QB.

Thats why they had to trade for dobbs
They should have just picked up Wentz instead of trading there draft choice or they should have traded for Trey Lance like the cowboys did.
Colin you gotta learn how the cap works
Saying that Penix had to carry "lesser talent" is just objectively wrong. We watched it play out over the last 3 days. Penix's targets: 2 drafted in the top 40, and another in the top 100, plus his BOTH tackles went in rounds 1 and 2 respectively. 10 PLAYERS DRAFTED. Only 3 of those outside of the top 100.
JJs top target went round 3... Just a few picks before Penix's WR3 went off the board. (Yes. I know the TE Loveland will be a high pick next year) 11 players from that team drafted. MOST on the defensive side of the ball. Roman, Corum and Zinter were the highest offensive picks besides JJ, all in round 3.
The Atlanta Falcons have found a way to become newsworthy. The Atlanta Falcons.
The fact that Colin didn’t have penix to the Falcons in his mock draft tells you all you need to know about his analysis.
Edit: People really don’t get sarcasm
I mean most people didn't, it didn't exactly fit what's considered 'conventional'
As a Bears fan, thank you Atlanta for not trading out of 8. Helped us get Odunze :) My bias aside, I was initially baffled at what the Falcons were doing but the more I think about it, the saying is " The best time to draft a qb is when you don't need one."

He doesn't like JJ McCarthy but says he will succeed , so if he succeeds he can come back and say " I told you he would succeed" 😂🤦♂️
The problem is Penix is going to be 24 when the season starts. There's a solid chance he'll be 26 or 27 before he's the starter
Imagine he then is one of the top QB’s in the league for 10 years. Idk why people act like he’s gonna be geriatric at 26 lmfao
@@ZephraFPSright! QBs are playing to nearly 40 now and he’s turning 24 this next month. Getting 5-10 years out of a great QB is a big win no matter how you slice it.

@Pogibearx Penix has had 4 season ending injuries what if he isn't good in 2-3 years
What if Kirk gets hurt
Couldn't agree more with this take.
Penix sitting behind a pro like Cousins is fantastic - so good for Penix - I think this was an absolute gold standard pick
If anything, Minnesota played their cards perfect. They liked JJ, and it will work, and they kept their 2nd number 1 this year. And they have their first round next year. Why give up everything when you don’t have to? JJ will work, and it could work out big. He is a winner.
“You know who teams DIDNT move up to get? The guy the Vikings moved up to get!”
Total idiot. I noticed that too. Couldn’t take any more points seriously after hearing that.
Some of your points are valid but I dont think you can make the argument that Cousins might get injured again, considering Penix has had 4 season ending injuries, including tearing the same ACL twice. Cousins is 36 and more durable than Penix is
Was just about to leave thinking there was nothing noteworthy being said here when Colin says that Penix will be 'the best backup in the league?' Maybe. Maybe not. But to state it like it's a fact is just bizarre.
The league has shown it can't pick a QB and Harbaugh knows what he is talking about. I like Herd but how can he even say JJ had better targets than Penix at Washington?
If you don't plan on playing bad for the next few years, you won't be able to land a great QB. This is a smart move. Every great team drafts a QB when the team has a good QB.
Look at the teams who dont draft a good QB when they are good, where are they now? Patriots, Giants, Raiders, Saints, Washington, and list goes on.
Kirk Cousins was the insurance policy for RGIII.
thanks grandpa collin. this really helped clarify that atlanta pick
The problem wasn't the Penix pick, it was the Cousin's contract before the Penix pick.
I love how everyone defends the Penix pick by knocking on Cousins. They say Atlanta was smart. Lol.
I love Colin, always a passionate opinion...even when often wrong. First, Penix isn't ANYTHING but a LOTTERY TICKET until he plays in multiple NFL games. So Colin's insurance idea is specious. Second, absent a Cousins injury, Pennix will be 27-28 BEFORE he sees the field....and Pennix has an injury history. Third, the Rogers/Love situation is instructive, but not for the reasons Colin thinks. The Packers kept pissing away SUPER BOWL chances when they had a HOF/MVP type QB. It is criminal Rodgers has only been to one Super Bowl. But, that's what happens when they only use 2 out of 14 first round picks on offense (2 tackles)...and only one pans out (Bulaga). When you have a good-great QB you give him all the weapons and protections you can. Finally, the OWNER is turning 82 this season....does he want some happiness and glory of a Super Bowl before he dies? Or does he just want his team to have a CHANCE to be good when he's dead?
So you think because Cousin's is coming off a major injury it was a good idea to draft a QB with an extensive injury history?
Lmao
Thanks for talking me off the ledge. It makes sense to me now. Life long Falcons fan.

Nobody was willing to move up to take JJ... except the vikings who moved up to take JJ...
If the Falcons were so concerned about Cousins’ longevity, then why sign him?
Kirk Cousins will be 36 at the start of the 2024 season. Given that the majority of quarterbacks are backups or out of the league at 34, Cousins already is ahead of the curve. You can't expect him to be good at age 38, much less 40.

The Herd speaking facts while everyone else is freaking out.
The problem with this pick is, you will have to have two different offensive schemes. 1 for Cousins and another for Penix! Not the best idea!
I actually agree with this take. Don't be short-sighted. We could certainly be proved wrong, but right now I like it.
It's not about Penix. It's about where they drafted him.
Ok there’s so much wrong with this analysis. The falcons weren’t gonna draft a “linebacker” at 8. They desperately needed an edge rusher and they had their pick of any of them at 8. Yeah a good backup is great, but at 8 that’s a bit rich for a backup.
First video of the herd I’ve watched in a while. Clearly it’s time to re subscribe and watch!
