  • I hesitated to buy this knife for a very long time because it didn't incorporate scissors. While I would really enjoy an X version of this knife, I wish I would have purchased it a lot sooner. This is a fantastic minimalist carry knife. I am really struck by how much I enjoy the smaller frame size of this knife as well. Let's take a look at the Victorinox Cadet in Red Alox.

Would be so nice if they did. But since they haven't had 84mm scissors since the mid-80s and their tooling apparently broke, it doesn't seem likely. I honestly don't know why they can't just fix/remake the tooling for it.

So a nail file, blade and scissors? Maybe if the nail file were flat at the end to double as a screwdriver, then it would just be a larger Classic SD. I think a better configuration would be a Bantam with scissors, so you still have the ''multipurpose'' can/bottle opener but more importantly flathead and Phillips (in a pinch).

  • @miklospinter

    Good video :)
Just 2 hints for the future:
    1. I think it's safer to open the "least sharp" tools first, and then the sharper and sharper ones. I would leave the blade to the end.
    2. If you half open a tool (except the bottle opener that has a half stop), you are putting pressure on the back spring, and the tool on the other end of the same layer is much more difficult to open (and there is more risk that it closes on you).
-> Opener layer: fully or half open the bottle opener FIRST (no tension on the spring), THEN the can opener.
-> Blade layer: if you fully open the reamer or the blade, the other tool will be easier to open.

Maybe if Wenger weren't owned by Victorinox we would see a return of the 84mm scissors. But I don't think they want to diminish the sales of the Delemont 85mm and I assume those scissors are easier and cheaper to make than the Vic design. Unfortunately I don't like them and would much rather they made 84mm scissors again. Only option is to cary a Swiss card or a Classic for the scissors and additional tools. Cadet is still an excellent pocket carry and is very discreet option even for a suit. I gave then as groomsman's presents at my wedding. We used them a bit that day, not least for opening some beverages. I enjoy your videos and commentary

I started carrying the Cadet Alex about 4 years ago. I used to carry the Tinker but the size and weight of the Cadet won me over for EDC. It was my first Alex knife and I have been afraid that the Alox scales would war quickly. Not so - it looks the same today as it did when I bought it and I have carried it every day. I also got the Alox Farmer which has everything I need in a pocket knife. I keep that in my back pack.

I do like to EDC the Cadet, but occasionally I carry the alox Bantam. It's a single layer knife that has everything the Cadet does except for the nail file. It is unbelievably thin and manages this by using a combination tool fo the bottle opener / can opener / screwdriver. (If I'm going that minimal I'll drop an alox Classic SD in the coin pocket - this adds nail file and scissors and a knife too small to be useful...)

Why a Cadet X? When you have a Pioneer X and imo the reamer is much better than a nailfile. Okay it's 93mm not 84mm. Imo a better option would be a Bantam X, which would be basically an alox Compact (minus backtools and scale tools).

@@timsummers870 You mean based on youtube comments you've read, probably only in English? Funnily enough no German, Spanish or Dutch language SAK review yt comment sections voice this opinion. Okay snarkiness aside there are 2 reasons Vic don't make every combination model or indeed make custom SAKs. The first is that this way we keep buying more SAKs in our quest for perfection which we never attain, and most of us wish for a model which doesn't exist. Otherwise we might well just buy one for life, given their durability, whereas as it is I bet most SAK owners possess more than one. Secondly in the German speaking world the Swiss are renowned and even derided for being slow and stubborn, and in the case of Victorinox it is still just a small family-owned business (the CEO is still an Elsener) in a small town where it's workforce are from. So don't expect them to adapt to your American ''the market wants'' philosophy in this lifetime lol.

My initial foray into multi tooling was a Leatherman Core. I didn’t get into SAK’s until way later. The Cadet is an amazingly useful tool. Capable beyond what the eyes would initially suggest. Another bonus is that it’s totally unthreatening to the average sheeple. If the kid is at the playground and the Cadet comes out to cut something or fix something absolutely nobody pays attention.

I’ve been carrying a cadet every day for ten years and love it. I would really like a version with scissors, but would want some modifications to keep it to two layers. This would likely mean going with the combo tool like on the Classic and possibly losing the nail file (maybe it could still fit?). For now, I get around the lack of scissors by also carrying a Leatherman Style CS, which also gets me a longer driver and tweezers. The Style PS would work as well (they don’t carry the CS anymore) and would add small pliers and wire cutters. A Micra or a Victorinox classic would also be a good pairing.

  • @dpg227

The Cadet is such a pocket friendly size. So delightfully short, thin, and lightweight. For me, anything under 3.5 inches can go right in that little fifth pocket. That way it doesn't need a pocket clip, and won't wind up sideways at the bottom of your hip pocket without one. I would definitely buy an "X" version of this knife. Hopefully, it would be a new 84mm version of the Victorinox scissors, though, and not the 84mm Wenger scissors with the tension bar and the serrations.

The cadet with a pair of scissors would be the perfect EDC for me, agree. And i would instantly get also a sportsman (basically... A cadet plus back tools and scale tools) with added scissors. Shame they don't do 84mm size scissors.
For the nail file, agree it's much better than the secondary blade, not only for grooming, but also... It's a pretty much perfect flat Philips driver for smaller size screws.
For the can opener... I see your point ,claw style is better if you look at it as a... Can opener! But honestly, who opens tin cans with a tool nowadays? While Victorinox can opener is basically the best "delicate" pry tool around, and doubles as a small flat head and a medium size Phillips screwdriver, for these reasons it's basically one of my favourite tools, would actually be perfect if sharpened in the back, like a opening hook

  • @danishskiwarehouse
    @danishskiwarehouse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I really enjoy your reviews, thank you. Your point about these not having scissors is the same as mine, although the extra layer’s added width would impact how slim they are in the pocket. So... I have in my head the solution of “modular” Swiss Army Knives. Basically, all SAKs have the Cadet as their basis. (I know there’s differences: length, second blade vs file, corkscrew/Phillips/nothing etc. but you get the idea.) For me, a complementary “knife” would be fantastic: it would contain no blade or opening layers, but things like scissors, pliers, in-line Phillips etc. That way, the increasing width could be distributed across two tools and therefore two pockets. I know it goes against the very idea of a multi tool, but for me the practicality would be interesting. I’ve toyed with the idea of modding my Deluxe Tinker so that it would lose its Cadet tools, but always chicken out! Great review as always.

Lots of calls here in the comments section for Vic to make a Cadet X or even a Cadet without opener layers but with scissors...so a nailfile, blade and scissors...just an enlarged Classic (not SD if if the nailfile is pointed). I don't see so much utility in a nailfile - but maybe a real file. Anyway I think a winner would be to add scissors to the Bantam instead, so it would only be 2 layers, but the combitool would give you more utility - bottle opener/flathead and can opener/Phillps in a pinch. I say in a pinch because I have a GAK and using the combitool on a Phillips at an angle is pretty awkward.

Theres a lot to like about these alox versions but ultimately the lack of scale tools is a deal-breaker for me. The tweezers are half the reason why I carry my Compact or Classic on any given day. Victorinox tools are great auxiliary options (backups, as you say) to carry along with a heavier-duty knife or pliers-based multitool, but the truth is theres a lot of jobs that I don't trust those thin little pieces of 4116 to handle. But I never regret having a pair of tweezers nestled away in my pocket. Or those little scissors, which really are great.

White? Never seen a white Cadet, except for custom mods maybe.
I even heard that you cannot anodize aluminium white, that would have to be a coating.

Yeah, I misspoke on that point. My mistake.

Your Cadet is an older model, the ones made since 2018 have another nail file design.

What type of files do the newer models have?

@@name5949 I guess it's personal preference. Some people say the new one is better, others like the old one more. For fingernails the old one might be better, for other stuff I like that the edges are not flat but also textured

Pair the Cadet with a Knipex Cobra XS and put a lot of larger, heavier plier-based multitools to shame.

Another great vid, Thanks. Have to agree with you Ben on a "Cadet X" Alox SAK being a most useful and personable package.
I got a custom "Cadet X" made up some years ago and when in use it has me thinking why Victorinox don't release such a great tool.

Your link is working now. I love that knife, I'm so jealous. Where were you able to get that made custom? That is something I would be very interested in. If you could spare it for a little bit, I would love to feature your knife on the channel as well.
