  • The Monoprice Cadet 3D Printer is quite small. Though, it punches pretty well for it's size. Can it perform well enough? Here is my review!

I think like any printer you are sacrificing your time to get a quality print out for price. You get good prints out of this despite its ridiculously small size and it is priced high. I've spent dozens of hours fine tuning and upgrading several Ender 3's and get better prints, with comparable prints coming off at around 3 hours of tuning for the same price.

@@99salabar If you are only getting 50% of your prints from an Ender 3 then there is something not set up correctly, I have had 2 Ender 3 printers for over 2 years now and the only failed prints I have had have been due to a badly wound roll of filament that kept getting snagged and a wood filament print that blocked my nozzle because I was printing at too high a resolution for the filament

Prusa Research just launched a school program, where you (as a school) fill a form on their website and they will lend you one of their printers (either i3 MK3 or MINI) for free for 3 months. If you use it during lessons and, in the 3 month time, deliver a project you've worked on together with the students, the printer is free to keep for you. The project can be as simple as a cookie cutter or a key ring.

This was on my list a few months ago when I bought the PowerSpec (Monoprice/Wanhao) Duplicator I3 Mini V2. I chose this one because of the slightly larger print volume, the heated bed and it's a lot cheaper at $140. This is my first printer, so I thought this would be the most value way to get my feet wet. The print quality is probably on par with the Cadet, but there are plenty of mods and support for the I3 Mini. Is the size small? Yes, but I figured it's enough to get by for now. Most of the projects I have in mind fit this size anyway. Thanks Joel for the great vids!

I can see this used in a children classroom where students will continue to be young and inexperienced year after year but not for beginners, the enclosed designed is ideal to keep away little hands from the hot-end. I chose the Artillery Sidewinder X1 as a beginner because it's a platform that can grow with me instead of me having to throw it away after I outgrow it.

I got mine from monoprice marked down to $70 including shipping. For that price I had to get my first 3d printer. I love this thing. I'm a retired engineer so learning the freecad software was not a big deal. I've been busily replacing broken items around the house as long as they are not more than 4 inches. Vacumm cleaner wheels to pop-up camper parts. For the most part, no problems. I got it to print with wifi but it was much slower than just copying to an SD card.

my first printer was a M3D Micro 5 years ago. 2 years ago I replaced it with a Monoprice mini delta. Both printers have a build volume comparable to the Cadet. Sometimes I wished for more, but until now I really could live with it, when the alternative was no printer at all, because of the lack of space. Now I'm going to free some space for a larger printer (Creality CR 6 SE) but I'd still recommend a small cheap printer to anyone who wants to get started. You can do a LOT with it.

I've worked with classroom 3d printing and I can definitely see the appeal of this. Most of the time there isn't enough time to print an object larger than 100mm. With no exposed wires, and auto bed leveling it makes it easy for inexperienced teachers to use.
As a comparison: We are a bunch of PC people looking at a mac. We want more options and more control, but the simplicity of this appeals to those less inclined to learn about the inner workings of 3d printing.

I realise this is a really old review, but my kid (also 10 years old, Joel :) has just had a 3d-printing summer-camp where they learnt Blender and printed what they designed. As part of the camp they got to bring the printer home, and it was one of these Cadet printers. My son loves it. As I speak, it's printing the Eiffel Tower (in 2 parts, this is the lower part) and has been for the last 12 hours. It looks awesome so far (it's been going all night with maybe an hour to go).
FWIW, I work at R&D in Apple, and you can do quite a bit of stuff with a Mac :) But what the little printer has done is start me looking at much better ones - the Raise3D Pro3 looks good, as do the Vision Miner 22 IDEX and the Mosaic Element HT...

Joel, I think there is a place for printers like this. For instance I'm working on a Voron0 and Voron2.4. The Voron0 has a 120mm^3 build volume. I'm building it so I have a small printer on my desk for rapid design iteration and testing. Before sending off the full part on a full build platter to a larger printer. The other use is as a back-up printer to be able to make replacement parts for your main printer. All that being said, I think the price is a bit high for not having a heated bed, and for the lack of finished software.

Sometimes limitations are good. With basically 100^3 for build volume, given the right settings realitically a class of students say 20 kids could reasonably go through one students print per class while reviewing the one from the prior day and teaching about additive manufacturing design

I got the Toybox about a month ago. I have made so many things. A number have been low poly pokemon but they spark joy😊. I've also made a couple soap holders for my bathrooms.
The app and their library is very easy to use. I've imported a several outside models and most have printed pretty good.
I am rapidly out growing it but I knew that was a risk going in. It's good at making little things. It's plug and play. I can see making toys for my niece for as long as it will print.
I'm looking at getting a bigger more capable printer in the near future. I think little printers are great for getting a taste of 3d printing. Their practicality is limited but they can just be fun.

We do also sells these under a different name. I discovered that they bungled up the firmware making it unhackable. Not to dwell on the open source license violation, this means they kinda threw out what would be a major selling point to me. A 3d printer that works out of the box, and also allows for a little hardware hacking later? *That* would be a 3d printer for students. Alas, that's not what this is.
But it could be. All Weedo needs to do is release the source for their firmware (which, again, they should have done from the start) and this machine would be worth the price in my opinion.

I have MP Select Mini V2. Bought for 180€ inc. Taxes and shipping a year and a half ago. For home practical printing (clips, holders, small storage boxes) it did ok, but I have heated bed that is deforming from heat, effectively limiting usable space. 100mm3 print volume has one benefit. It forces your maximum print time to sensible limits and lack of heat means no styrene materials. As bad as it sounds it may be somewhat a feature 🤔

Seems like theres a lot of comparing price to build size of another machine. One thing you can say for this machine is that it printed out of the box. You dont always get that with the other machine. Sometimes you also dont need a larger printer and could use the space saving. I have 3 taz and 5 minis. But most the time I use the minis since it fits on there and takes less counter space.

I've done a lot of research on 3d printers to decide on which one I want to start with. I am currently waiting for a Tina 2 to arrive from amazon. It's pretty much the same printer as the Cadet. As far as functional items I looked at multiple models and it was either small enough for a tina 2/Cadet or too large for even the more expensive printers I looked at. I got the feeling that you were a bit biased about the printer before you even started looking at it. There are numerous workarounds over the spool holder. There are even extensions or replacement spool holder you can print on the tina 2/Cadet. All in all though I liked your review.

I have a customized DICE 3d printer (with build volumn = 105 x 95 x 89) sitting on my table next to my laptop. And because of its size, weight and quietness, I'd say it is actually useful, especially for home users like me who do not have a basement or a garage, need to move from time to time, and live with wife and young kids. I can carry it from place to place, I can print at night, without annoying my wife and kids. However it would be perfect to have a little bit larger build volumn like 120x120x120.

The replacement printer has so far been great. WiFi still not working but the printer does see the network. My cooling fan has started to make a nasty grinding noise so I am exoecting that to go south soon. It has printed a baby groot in wood, two statues in gold on two marble plyinths a yoda and a vaze. All printed really well by my un experienced standard. I love the auto bed leveller and auto feed. I altered the Gcode to push the bed further out. I am a 3D newbie but a 40 year programmer :)

The build volume may stil lbe good for certain things. I am actually trying to conceptualize (i.e. before build) a set of SMALL printers witharound this build vorume - x5 (i.e. one print bed or two that is 10cmX10xmX60cm (or 2x30cm) and has one independent arm for 10cm width. Likely fully independent in a Prusa Mini style setup, coming from the back. The idea being to be space efficient (also in height) and print 6 differnet small parts at the same time in a batch. So, small volume printers DO have a use case - and the price can be higher, as a lot of the components do not get cheaper when the build voumne is small. They just may not be mass market.

If they could get the price down, I think that it would be great for school use. 3D printing takes time so larger prints couldn't really be printed in the time frame of a class (or two). Plus with a lower price a classroom could have one for each student, it would be a great extracurricular class, or like a class in a summer camp or something like that.

I use this printer to make fasteners, and in this case to hold numerical elements on a scoreboard, using rubber bands on the back of scoreboards in archery. I can actually print faster on this machine than on larger printers, and get better results at the same speed. Strange but true.

  • @Bajicoy
    @Bajicoy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I could see a dozen of these printers being used in a class room to get young kids into printing, tucked into a small desk/shelf, or someone battery powering one for a road trip. The small build volume actually forcing people not to try and print a car bumper replacement is a good thing for time sensitive beginners. It's probably not the safest thing for kids without an enclosure or hepa filter but it can be a fun machine for someone not looking for a diy kit. Nice review, pains me to see simps in the comments constantly recommending the ender 3 which is a good printer but far from a one size fits all machine that really misunderstands the non-hobbyist community.

  • @thoughtchallenge

I had to at least do a couple of upgrades to my ender 3...I upgraded the micro SD card to standard SD....The build plate to glass and the extruder to dual gear....I'm getting some nice prints now...that may be largely due to slowing down the print speed....Also, I had to replace the adjustment wheels and springs on the Ender 3 because the wheels kept coming off from day one....I actually, found one loose in the package and it never did stay on....Ender 3 doesn't have auto bed leveling....though I can work around that....Some of my projects require many small parts which I glue together. It would be nice to have a second printer even if it prints smaller parts....Most of my printing would fit in this print space....I'm surpried this company isn't marketing this as a supplemental printer to seasoned hobbyists.

As someone no too knowledgeable on 3D printing, what I do know is 250 is fairly cheap and priced for the average consumer if they can get decent use out of it, when I think about the limited room I think "Can't I just print something in smaller pieces and epoxy it together later? I mean it's just plastic right?" not the optimal way, but I'd think it could be done.

Attach a hook to the top and stick it on the tree this Christmas. Sure it would be one expensive ornament but I would get more use and enjoyment from it that way. Not sure what the thought process was behind this. There are several smaller printers with a lower price and I feel a full featured printer would be better for a classroom so that you actually learn about the printer, parts, and functions.

Little anecdote to show, in my opinion, where this printer fits.
A month ago my Finder finally bit the dust, and I thought that since i mainly print really small stuff, I should get a small printer. A lot of the stuff I print is dnd miniatures, small combat robots, that sort of thing. Now a lot of people I asked said "Just get a resin printer" but I am a student in a one bedroom flat, disposing and cleaning of resins is not really something I can do safely here. Mainly I wanted something about this size, tiny build volume and more focused on high quality prints, something i can put a smaller nozzle on. If I knew about this printer a month ago I probably would've bought it because for my needs this seems perfect.
I ended up buying a second hand ender 3, but I feel like I've paid for this huge build space, but i usually use maybe 5% of it. If this printer was cheaper, it would be exactly what I was after.

    • @TBakerBots
      @TBakerBots 4 ปีที่แล้ว

In addition to this, I have a friend that came to me recently wanting to buy her first printer. She's not experienced at all with this sort of thing and wanted to just print small things as she makes jewelry on etsy, again, resin was out of the question due to lack of space to safely deal with it, and also wanting to keep costs as low as possible when it comes to selling the things she makes. She ended up buying the Flashforge Finder as I've had a lot of experience with that, had one for about 4 years and it comes ready to print out of the box and filled her needs easily. This however takes up way less space and has a flexible build plate which is a win over the finder.

Technical support and ease of setup are critical for educational applications of complex machines like a 3D printer. That’s what makes Prusa Mini the superior choice over anything like this. I bet if presented with a large order for a school system that Josef would knock $50 off the $400 price (delivered) and the price/value equation would be manageable for middle schools or high schools.

For the demographic it is aimed at, it does okay, not great...most people are saying Ender 3, but this actually has a lot of features, for a kid that the Ender does not have. For an Adult, NO, Younger teen or preteen, I say Yes. Realistically it is not that mush smaller than a MP Mini or Mini Delta, I have both, and still use both. Ender 3, Flashforge Creator X, DIY CoreXY....I still use the mini's for small prints, especially around the holidays. For ornaments, name tags, key chains, they are great little printers with a tiny footprint.

Actually, for most prints I would be fine with this volume. Only a few things I would love to have way bigger, but for those I'd buy the upcoming coreXY. :) This however, is not that good if quality of the prints is required, especially for the price of an Ender3, which with a tiny bit of tinkering can outperform this one 10x over. :)

In my opinion printers with 220x220 are just a little to small. Usually this space is not 100% usable. Also when adding a brim to larger prints it is a pain to always fiddle the thing diagonal on the plate and the brim is eating build space. Especially when doing practical prints size matters more. Cases or repair parts can easy outsize the build volume. Real 230x230 would be perfect. That why ended up building my own printer with 300+x300+ size. No more tweaking the orientation.

If the machine is reliable it is very doable
