And that scaffolding is why I preferred building overhand , there’s no room on that scaffold I’d bang my head every time I went for a brick or a trowel of mortar, and yes that’s what I used to do with the brick then my hodsman told me to cut them on the ground as I was making him carry up too many hodfulls

Looks like you had a right one on you that day Steve! 🤔😂. Still laying them like a boss though. And fair play to the gang that did the adjacent gable - looks tidy. And as we all know the higher up Brickies go the less they give a shit. The state of some gables I've seen over the years is shocking. Sounds odd but that;s how I measure a good bricky - when they do good work even when you can't see it!

if there are any scaffolders on here, can you confirm this narrow scaffold for a 900 gap has 2 ledgers instead of the usual 1 to each edge of the scaffold.
EDIT: I can see the 2 ledgers (4 in total) in the video the second time around. Puzzling, I don't understand why the scaffolder has used 2 unless it is to reduce an already narrow gap.

I have a question as a layman. I am not a builder, brickie or anything else, just an incompetent DIY idiot but I have been reading about cavity insulation recently as I'm not certain that the newer part of my house (~20 years old extension) has cavity insulation and I'm looking at whether I should do it if not. You hear horror stories about cavity wall insulation causing awful damp problems and as I understand it, it's when excess blobs of mortar land on and stick to ties (snots, I think?), which I assume is pretty hard to control even if you're super neat as you guys seems to be. I have seen other building videos where they used Celotex/Kingspan in the cavity against the block with a small airgap to the outer skin, so I'm wondering why on these houses they would take the risk of eventually causing damp in a brand new house by using blown insulation rather than closed cell boards: Is a it a cost thing or is modern blown insulation just much better than whatever used to be used? In my case the extension doesn't seem all that well built so frankly if it isn't already insulated it might well not be suitable, but I'm trying to learn and understand more. Really enjoy your vids though, helpful for my small DIY projects to see the mortar consistency in action as I have no clue otherwise!!

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex what about those that are middle of the road. Do you have to stop laying an hour before you finish to let it partially dry so to speak? Reason I ask is I’m about to do an extension for my dad which is brick. I have some experience with brickwork but it’s mainly been rustic type bricks so you could say there more margin for error. It’s all stonework round my area mainly you see. Just don’t want to make a tit out of myself for jointing up too early/late and make a mess. Any advice would be great. Cheers
