@@garyarnett1220 I stand corrected, you are absolutely right that nothing has ever changed which makes the song even more relevant. The thing that is sad is that it has gotten worse.
Motown was criticized for not being relevant and the songwriters took this to heart to reflect the conflicts of the late 60s early 70s. War! What is it good for? ❤🎉❤
Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote many of Motown's greatest hits -- "Money (That's What I Want)", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "War", "Smiling Faces Sometimes", "Cloud Nine", "I Can't Get Next to You", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", "Ball of Confusion", and "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" to name several. When you're ready for more sixties psychedelic soul, check out some of these tracks: Sly & The Family Stone "Everyday People", "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"; Brenton Wood (aka Alfred Jesse Smith) "Gimme Little Sign", "I Think You've Got Your Fools Mixed Up", and "Oogum Boogum Song"; and Jimi Hendrix "Rainy Day, Dream Away" and "1983....(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)"; The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today", "Funky", "Uptown to Harlem".
Try “Friendship Train” 1969 hit by Gladys Night and The Pips. Great message for its time and still today. But more than just a message it is a great track that will get you moving. Opens with funky bass, then cowbell, fuzzy guitars, horns and then the glorious vocals of Gladys Night. Studio version please.
Yay! You reacted to my favorite Temptations song! I love it so much I got a couple of ladies together and we performed it on stage. The ladies had never heard it before, they were very young, and they learned it because they fell in love with it. These lyrics have been relevant over all these years. Happy New Year!
Love their earlier music too ~ ~ ~ Ain't too proud to beg, My Girl, Beauty's only skin deep, The girls alright with me, Cloud nine, Psychedelic shack ~ ~ ~ and the list goes on and on and on ~
No end to the Temptations hits and as you said relevant songs.Try,Papa was a Rolling Stone,or Masterpiece that Quincy Jones Produced. Many more that made the top forty
Such a great band. You can't go wrong with the Temptations. They're an American treasure. You gotta check out some Sly and the Family Stone. The song If You Want Me To Stay is a good one. And Thank You is another goodie.
Graduated from High School in the '60s, we couldn't live with Motown. Nobody cared about the color of the music or where it came from. If it was good, it was good. Music that touches your heart brings people together. You learn from music.
I was in high school/college during the 60's. A lot of music genius was part of the times. Motown and R&B certainly was an aspect of that. Two of my favorites are by Lou Rawls...Dead End Street and Tobacco Road. There were just so many excellent groups from this time. Temptations, Miracles, Supremes, Major Lance, etc., and let's not forget Sam & Dave.
A song that has a similar theme is "What's Goin' On" by Marvin Gaye. Very different vibe (but it's awesome) but similar current-events-relevant lyrics. It came out less than a year after the Temps' song -- no signs that it was cribbed, the feeling was just in the air. "The band played on" was a song first published over 100 years ago in 1895, which repeated the phrase "and the band played on" over and over. I think the songwriters (and Shilts) got the phrase from that earlier song although they used it in a very different way. (BTW if you haven't read Shilts' book, it's a real eye-opener about the AIDS epidemic.)
If you liked Rage Against the Machine, then you'll LOVE Rare Earth - Hey Big Brother. It sounds EXACTLY like Rage, but it was the original sound that was invented in 1971
Wonderful song. Something of a mess lyrically, just like the name suggests, like they weren't really sure what to protest, so they threw everything in there. Also one of the great one chord songs. Probably made more use of the bass than any other Temptations song.
I was around during all the Vietnam protests, (although I lived in Hawaii at that time where there were no protests), and I think it's good to get this message and be a part of trying to change things. But the kids took it too far. Public protest just leads to destruction of property and accomplishes nothing. The war would have ended anyway, because of all the deaths and defections of US soldiers. And it was a quagmire over there. There were better ways to protest then, and the same is true now. Look at Kent State and the shootings. If the students hadn't used violent protests as a tool, the shootings wouldn't have happened.
If the national guard wasn't sent to a college campus armed with rifles the shootings wouldn't have happened either. The establishment clearly took it too far, killing students who were on their way to class and had nothing at all to do with the protests that day. There were better ways to conduct foreign policy than to prop up colonial interests who were already losing a civil war. The same is true now...
Psychedelic Shack is one of The Temptations song you need to hear
"Just My Imagination" by The Temptations might well be in the top five most soulful songs ever recorded.
That's what the world is today...yeah.
I dare anyone to tell me that this song isn’t relevant today and proves that history repeats itself. Love the Temps keep them coming.
That is why the Dem party wants it erased! They do not want you to see it coming
Not so much history repeating itself as this struggle never really ended and keeps getting worse.

@@mikerichards67 Agreed, so many people try to make things better, but seems like we're stuck sliding down this slope. Happy New Year.
@@garyarnett1220 Thank you, Happy New Year .
Papa Was A Rolling Stone, the 12 minute album cut.
… the Beatles new record’s a gas. !!!!! In 2023 a new Beatles song - Now and Then - and it’s still a Ball of Confusion with all the same problems.
And the Band played On.
Reference to the band on Titanic ?

What is War good for? Cool song but it created America. Without War we are slaves.

I always liked this song, I have this record. The Temptations have so many good songs.

Eddie Kendricks, from The Temptations, went solo a year later. His hits, "Keep On Truckin" and "Boogie Down", are cool songs.
I love Eddie Kendricks "Girl You Need a Change Of Mind."

Temptations were fantastic. Singing was perfect.
Great Motown music
Killer funk/psych vibes! You gotta do Cloud Nine next!

Great song! I know it's a little late but the Temps. have an amazing version of Silent Night if you're in the mood. All of their vocals are amazing ✌

Saw the Temptation’s musical on Broadway, NYC!!! Phenomenal! Called.. Ain’t To Proud!

One of those songs that still applies today. Every word. Steppenwolf's Monster/Suicide/America is another. Word for word.

Not much has changed. Even the Beatles have a new song out.

Amazes me how cyclical it all is. How this is exactly the same state of affairs today. After 60 years ago
Happy new year, enjoy your show, from Detroit

You get lyrics more than any other lyrics.
Probably my favorite Motown group next to the Jackson 5.
1970 ANYWAY by Family/Roger Chapman vocals : Good News Bad News

Sad but true!! For a similar perspective try "Throwing Stones" by The Grateful Dead
Listening to this today makes me feel like it's a half a song. They could've gone a couple more minutes easy, if the Label would've allowed it.
A song that doesn’t (unfortunately) become irrelevant. Another is Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye
Barry Gordy wasn't very comfortable with his artists recording "Protest" songs.
Marvin, The Temps etc.
Those times we thought were in the rear view mirror have returned. Thanks to One Orange Liar. Sadly we are in worse shape now.
😂🧐
GREAT SONG!!!!
The words are so true
the beginning of their psychedelic days, lasted a year or two.
Great reaction still relevant today
