Mockingbirds get mad and attack. They won't abandon. My Dad used to aggravate a mama every year just to get her to swoop and peck his head. I've got pictures of him laughing, holding a baby, the mana swooping on him, with blood running down his face.
Holding a chick does not make the mother abandon it. I had blue bird nests, and the parents let me hold and feed the babies. They trusted me, though. I brought all of them food.
