I saw them play this live in '82 and it was one of my favorite parts of the show. Mike Rutherford's bass pedals shook the walls and you could feel them in the pit of your stomach. Phil Collins sang his heart out and then ran back to the drums for the end section to play along with Chester Thompson. And the lights! The Lights! The stage by this point was covered in dry ice fog and those gorgeous lights began pointing at the audience and moved from the front to the back of the stadium and finally came back to the stage for the final notes. That was one of my best memories attending concerts.
Tony Banks interviews: "The songs I wrote for Genesis on my own - "Afterglow" and "One For The Vine" - probably came from the heart rather than the head. "Afterglow is simple but still has elements of that splendour prog rock has,” its writer, Tony Banks, says. “I wrote it almost in the time it took to play it. It’s about a reaction to a disaster and the realisation of what’s important to you, in a slightly cataclysmic way. As I was writing the melody, I wrote that first verse and made the chorus the essence of what the person is actually thinking.”
Fun fact: Tony Banks also said that after composing Afterglow he couldn’t take out of his mind that it sounded like the song « Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas »
I first heard this on the "Seconds Out" live album and was drawn in by the deep Mellotron chords on the second half of each of the two lyrics, the parts where Phil sings "Oh, but I.." and "Oh, but now..", something dark and light about it at the same time. The version on "Wind And Wuthering" makes me picture the group on a bed of rocks leading away from the ocean shore, singing into the aftermath of a raging storm departing the coast. Great reaction, you two!
Great album, great song. Love the Seconds Out version of Afterglow. Eleventh Earl of Mar is my favorite off Wind and Wuthering. I also remember racing home from school to see Genesis perform Your Own Special Way on the Mike Douglas show.
@@davelafferty5728 Maybe you mean the Three Sides Live album. The last song on side 3. Phil Collins at his best when screaming I miss you more at the end of the song.
Sometimes I think that Phil is such an excellent singer that people forget what an incredible drummer he is. A huge thank you to my favorite reactors for covering one of my favorite bands. ❤
Afterglow is such a great track and is one I can listen to again and again."Your Own Special Way." Holds such a special place in my heart. It was a song that I used to play to my late wife on our anniversary. I love the song but have trouble listening to it now since I lost her. Such a beautiful song, though.
Such an emotional song. Tony said he took inspiration for the choral chords from 10cc’s Classic “I’m not in love”. As others have said an amazing song played live, with the dry ice and the backlit lighting. I was lucky to see this played live in the early 1980’s.
First heard this song live on Seconds Out in the seventies The bass pedal sound underneath it did it for me. That whole live album stunned me. They were so goooooood!
I've been a Genesis fan since 1973. Back in early 1977 I saw Genesis live for the one and only time. It was the tour for the Wind and Wuthering album from which this song is the last track. It was a fantastic gig and this is a fantastic album. Great reaction, guys !
My absolute favorite of any of the "schmaltzy" Genesis tracks...but you didn't do it justice listening to it as an isolated cut. Since you're now doing re-listens, at some point you need to listen the last 3 tracks of the album that rum together in perfection: The instrumentals "Unquiet Slumber For Sleeper" into "In That Quiet Earth" and THEN "Afterglow"...the whole albumbon Patreon will work, too!😊
When they played it live, nobody moved to enjoy the imense bass coming from the Moog Taurus basspedals, it was like living in a beautiful dream for a few minutes🥰
This is a perfect concert closing song, it is played a lot after the "In The Cage" medley that Genesis played so often which was, itself, amazing. The live version of "Afterglow" has to be seen and heard. Any video of the live version will show you the atmosphere that the lighting and effects add to the etheral music and lyrics.
Walked into a record store in 1978. They were playing the entire album called "And Then There Were Three" . Loved it. Bought all the previous and future recordings, my favorite band. ( I was a big Pink Floyd fan at that time, along with Steely Dan and the Beatles, ). As far as the Rolling Stones are concerned, listen to Time Waits For No One, my favorite Stones song. Los Endos.
I once heard Tony Banks say that after he wrote this song, at first he worried that he might have created just a new version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". Once you know that, it's hard to escape. Thanks for the review. ❤
Thanks for doing this one guys on the album it is part of the suite of Uquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers, In That Quiet Earth, Afterglow. But guys this has to be heard live it just is incredible. Genesis in their concerts always did this in a medley of old songs usually In The Cage/Cinema Show/In That Quiet Earth/Colony Of The Slippermen/Afterglow and in their tour of 2007 they included Duke's Travels in medley as well. Guys checkout the live versions just superb a 20mins of pure musical majesty, with Afterglow just on another level for amazing crescendo with Phil going back on the drums with Chester for ultimate power in a beautiful melodic ending. Guys you gotta do the live version from Rome in front of half a million people in Circus Maximus.
Album closer AND concert closer (prior to the encore) on a couple of tours. All I remember was tons and tons and tons of dry ice and amazing lighting. You know AFTERGLOW…
Hi nick , sorry _ I didn't realise you had already reviewed Jethro tull , minstrel in the gallery. I only found it recently in you're older video reviews, which I am now enjoying going through. Thanks!
I was going to recommend "Blood On The Rooftops" next but you already know that one! For anyone else who is curious be sure to check it out, one of Genesis' finest moments in that brief period with Steve Hackett before he left the band and took so much with him! Of course, Afterglow is another classic from this album that worked much better live, nice pick! Btw, if you enjoy last songs, try "Fading Lights" from "We Can't Dance", a fitting way to end with Collins.
THREE SIDES LIVE contains my favorite version of this song. I did request this song for my wedding to my wife of 30 years, but the band (no way were we having a DJ!) didn't know it, so the played EC's "Wonderful Tonight" instead.
Great track always remember when they play this live near the end of there concert the stage feels up with smoke amazing Band fantastic live Band seen them many times just great Prog
Afterglow featured in all of the Genesis live performances as last part of the 'In the Cage' medley. The final gig in the 2007 world tour 'When in Rome' was possibly the most stunning live performance throughout the Genesis era...Unmissable!
Hi Guys, this is such a beautiful song, but it is about loss, so I don't think anyone would have chosen it to get married to....however one never knows, there could be that exception of when a couple 1st met and this song was playing. If you ever get to watch any video of Genesis live then I highly suggest [ again ! Lol ] ... "In the Cage / Medley / Afterglow " from "When in Rome" which is on u.t. The entire concert is on Amazon Prime. The medley part is Tony Banks keyboard solos taking you through some classics before the segue into Afterglow, which is even more emotionally charged and powerful live ! ....the intro into "In The Cage" sends the crowd wild and it is a stunning version with lazer light visuals. Wow ! Glad you fanally got to hear this beautiful emotional song. Byee Jim X
Always good to hear your Genesis reviews. Sometime check out the Genesis Piano Project; would love to hear a comment on one of their versions, such as Firth of Fifth.
Heard it in the car on the way to band practice on WNEW NY when the album broke. They had played the whole thing and I caught this. Bought the record the next day.
Wind And Wuthering is one of the best Genesis albums, you have only heard the last part of three that go together and make up the fantastic ending of this great album. As a suggestion to listen to Genesis endings I recommend the apotheotic ending of Duke, Duke's Travels and Duke's End.
I convinced my college floor mate to go see Genesis (1978). He wasn’t a fan, but I agreed to go to the Boston concert if he went to Genesis. He was blown away by the concert and specifically Afterglow. The light show was amazing thought, but in Afterglow the whole arena glowed in white light and very one was blown away. (Unfortunately, I was more underwhelmed by Boston, but it was right after their second album and they were pushing those songs.)
I was born in 1960 and Genesis is my favorite band of all time. I like a ton of bands before and after but only Genesis, and esp Afterglow, are the BEST!!! I like new music all the time as I get tired of music quickly....but Genesis sticks with me. I appreciate "and then there were 3" and like Peter Gabriel's contribution also. It's a shame that Genesis and Phil Collins went pop. My friends thought i was on the fringe for liking Genesis in the mid 70s. The 2 albums in the 1976 are underappreciated: Wind and Wuthering and Trick of the Tail. Masterpieces in my humble opinion. We used to listen to them OFTEN whilst at university/college from 1978 to 1982
I would like this played at my funeral. Try the Seconds out version with two drummers in the end and the famous drum fill Chester learned to Phil. Or the Three sides live version which is so beautiful in the In the cage-cinema show medley !

Me too. This was “our song”. After my wife died suddenly in 2018, this said everything about what we felt for each other and I still listen to it regularly and think about us seeing Genesis play it at Twickenham in 2007.
I can say with complete confidence this has never been played at a wedding, and never will be. To me sounds like it's about lots and longing for something/someone lost. I might send this to an ex I'm trying to reconcile with to show the depth of my feelings.
Funny how everyone has their own thoughts. From the comments have read three people who say they’ve dedicated/sung/thought of their wives during this song. To each their own interpretation and likes I guess. 🤷🏻♀️ 💗 ✨
@@NicknLex a friend of mine once put the 10cc song "I'm Not in Love" on a mixed tape for a girl because it was such a beautiful song. Never heard from her again. Sometimes you really need to read/listen to the lyrics before you dedicate/choose it. Is it emotional? Yes. Could it make me think of my loved one? Yes. But we've all misheard or misinterpreted lyrics before. Though not as obvious of a mistake as my friend made, I stand by my statement. It's not a wedding song. It's an I was wrong and still love you in the divorce processing before it becomes permanent. Read the lyrics people before they say something you didn't intend.
First of all, if I were getting married I wouldn't have a song that said "I miss you" "now I've lost everything" and "in this world of none" - !! At the time, as a Yes fan but as a relatively recent follower of Genesis, I _hated_ this soppy, un-prog pop ballad, and - with some notable exceptions - I do think it heralded the deprogging of Genesis overall. What redeems it for me is that a) it's a fair conclusion when heard in order (as I feel it should be) following "Unquiet slumbers for the sleepers....in that quiet earth" and b) that despite its simplicity Tony's chords and inversions are pure Banks prog, and Mike's bass pedals (he does like a bass pedal) boost the fundament quite beautifully. They wrote and recorded it in something like a single day, as it happens; the later issue Spot The Pigein EP has three tracks that didn't make it to the album, and as they couldn't agree on any or all of them and rushed out Afterglow (or Afterthought as perhaps it should be known). Seek out and listen to Inside and Out, one of the excised songs - the fact they didn't include it very probably contributed to Steve Hackett quitting.
Please check out the version on Three Sides Live that is the end of the medley. Listen to the whole “In The Cage” medley, it’s my favourite live recording of all time. The power of Afterglow live brings grown men to tears (including me).
You two seriously need to go through the album "Seconds Out", complete, even if not at the same time but all of it and both of you, you will both be amazed especially with the drumming
Nick has done Cinema Shôw and Afterglôw from Seconds Out. th-cam.com/video/yfSnGk9MJOs/w-d-xo.html Agree that a reaction to this whole album would be killer good. One of my all time faves👍🎶
I may be the only one… my wife and I are Genesis fans and used this song for our last slow song of the night at our wedding in 1989….keep up the great work … a Genesis song suggestion would be Undertow from Then there were three….my fav
this song is the end of three: Unquiet slumbers for the sleepers - In that quiet earth _ afterglow. That's the reason you recognize no Prog in the single song, all prog is before! Genesis had play Afterglow like an end of something (cinema show expecially) in every concert. In seconds out it's lonely for timing in vinyl LP. Please, listen to the three togheter, for your health. Otherwise in Three sides live In the cage - medley - Afterglow. But the first sequence (wind & wuthering) is still the best. Love you guys! 😍😍😍
I would be remised not to say that the two prior gorgeous instrumental songs "Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers" & "In That Quiet Earth"... that segues into "Afterglow" from the album is the best way to experience this beautiful song. Here is an incredible 11-minute video of all three together that you must see and hear. th-cam.com/video/KhpY5cUQuI4/w-d-xo.html
I would support a full album reaction to Wind & Wuthering guys! You need to tick it off your list, especially so that you can hear the full climax to the album with the two preceding tracks bleeding into 'Afterglow'. Although it was released in the west in December '76, it only arrived in South Africa in January '77. I was just into my second year in SA and had moved from a residential hotel into a house share with six friends from the hotel. It was a huge, slightly decaying old house right next to the beach in Durban North with many banana and avocado trees in the garden. The rest of my house mates had to get used to this album very quickly because as soon as I got home from work every evening 'Eleventh Earl Of Mar' (Track 1, Side 1) would blast out from the record player in our communal bar. Incidentally there are lots of fun stories concerning the goings-on in that bar, and the classic albums that were played there. I'll save them for another time.
I love this song, but I actually prefer the live version which has a different end to the song instead of fading out. The voice choir on the synth by Tony is just magical.
As a fan who has Genesis as his favourite band and who has been listening to them for half a century, check out the final three tracks on this album thT all run together: unquiet Slumbers, in that Quiet Earth and Afterglow. Tell me if you have ever heard a better ending to an album than these together. I would love to know. And these aren't even the best tracks on the album. That accolade goes to, Blood on the Rooftops.
The live version of this song elevates it to another level. Check it out sometime :)
I generally do not prefer live versions but this song from 3 Sides Live is just incredible. Truly moving

I really like this song, great song, Thank you NicknLex, Love you guys❤❤
Beautiful!!
Favorite album. Trick a close second.
A masterpiece especially live....
Flo and Eddie (ex-The Turtles) did a wonderful remake of a different song called Afterglo. Check it out.
You mentioned 'One For The Vine'. You need to check out the live version from the 'Three Sides Live' Album (UK Version) Incredible music.
@eaglesrule1415 yes I had a feeling that Nick had listened to one or two tracks but I think Lex would love some of this stuff from Seconds Out
@@robertbarnett9939 Totally agree
A great choice. I heard an instrumental version of this as an Amiga Demo disc long before I found out it was a real album track.
I may be the only one… my wife and I are Genesis fans and used this song for our last slow song of the night at our wedding in 1989….keep up the great work … a Genesis song suggestion would be Undertow from Then there were three….my fav
Hi Folks,
Afterglow was written by The great Tony Banks...
And, One For The Vine.
Ronnie SCOTLAND 😊
When they married In the cage with this song … live, the irony did not fall on deaf ears.
The live (Late 70s timid 80s) version of this that is part of a medley is worth watching
this song is the end of three: Unquiet slumbers for the sleepers - In that quiet earth _ afterglow.
In The Cage/Afterglow from TSL is a must listen
You really have to listen to the Three Sides Live version, it’s on a whole another level
I love this song, but I actually prefer the live version which has a different end to the song instead of fading out. The voice choir on the synth by Tony is just magical.
Nick has done it th-cam.com/video/zvHCb0zIpU4/w-d-xo.html
so sad so beautiful
As a fan who has Genesis as his favourite band and who has been listening to them for half a century, check out the final three tracks on this album thT all run together: unquiet Slumbers, in that Quiet Earth and Afterglow. Tell me if you have ever heard a better ending to an album than these together. I would love to know. And these aren't even the best tracks on the album. That accolade goes to, Blood on the Rooftops.
