At 1.1s 0-60, we've almost certainly surpassed the grip capabilities of any realistic tires. It sounds like fun, but it also sounds like it'll wrap itself around a tree on its way off the lot.
Depends on what "realistic" is to you. Realistic for the street? You're probably right. Realistic on the tracks where they measure 0-60? Probably not. Afterall, Top Fuel dragsters do 0-60 in less than 1s.
Well, that's why it needs the cold gas thrusters. Grip not necessary when the tires aren't doing all the pushing.
@@SignzNSymbolz Yeah but a top fuel dragster has so much tyre flex that its footprint at launch has more surface area than the side profile of an entire 20" wheel on a road car. I just don't believe it's possible to put that kind of force down through normal wheels and tyres even with the stickiest compounds available and a well rubbered drag strip

Did the math, 'cause I was curious, and assuming a constant acceleration (high end EV's should actually get faster after zero as the aero starts to build), you're looking at ~2.5 g's to go from 0-60 in 1.1 seconds.
To hit 9g's, you'd have to do it in .304 seconds. :-)

The EV1 is generally considered a GM conspiracy due to them being LOVED by their owners, having such a long range, etc. They tried to make them just disappear, which made no sense for such progress.

it's a bit more boring, GM didn't know if the batteries would be any danger to the consumer after the expected service life, so they decided to avoid potential lawsuits by repossessing the cars.

GM has arguably been in the mass produced EV scene longer than anyone. The volt, as poorly marketed as it was, was a fantastic and reliable car. i think the highest mile volt had over 450k miles on it. and just as gm stopped producing the volt, now everyone else is making a volt-like car.
They've done other things in the EV world post ev1 let's not forget the volt was the second best-selling electric vehicle behind the Nissan leaf prior Tesla dethroning both of them which surprises me because they have the the cheapest build qualities

Just to give a little perspective a 0-60 time of 1.1seocnds is almost 2.5g's, the space shuttle at launch hits 3g's, top fuel dragsters can hit 5.3g's, and for us old people the Gravitron amusement ride exerted 2.5-3g's on you.
And f1 cars hit 5-6g while cornering and the drivers take it like it’s nothing 🥴
and f16 can consistently pull around 7 gs

@Jon VB The drag figure I gave was the g they pull going 0-100mph. Over a 1/4 mile a top fuel dragster averages 4.X g's. A driver in a car will barely feel vertical g's unless they are on a steep embankment. Just because the car feels the vertical g's doesn't mean the driver does.

I love my ICE engine car but we are approaching a day where besides sound and character, an EV performance car will be superior in every single metric. That's just the way it is.

man I still remember the first time I raced a tesla. I didn't know how fast they were, I had a twin turbo eagle talon making 500 hp and 445tq. we hit the horn three times and he beat me by not just streetlights but by super walmarts, i had to do the u turn of shame.

I timed it once. On level ground, 23.5 tons of payload grossing 79,875 lbs, with a 450 hp 15L ISX Cummins and an Eaton 10 you can hit 60 in 75 seconds. I would imagine 60 seconds could be achieved with the 600 hp Cummins. Now, as for the automatics, I'd say 5 minutes is optimistic since they're slow and unpredictable.
And, just because you can do that in a truck, doesn't mean you should. Especially with that much weight. It puts unnecessary stress on the whole truck and causes excessive tire wear.
Not like you'll ever see those claims actually since its been years since he promised to deliver them and not a single one has been delivered. As well as its an extra 20-40k lb's just for the batteries so you'll only be carrying about 30k lb's max so extremely inefficient and not real.
Forget about Cummins. Get a BLDC.
Gotta throw the batteries into the ocean, charges the eels. Perfectly safe and legal thrills!

A little surprised there was no mention of the Tango, which was/is a goofy tandem seater that was hitting 0-60 in 4 seconds back in '08 or so.
But, yeah, massive torque always makes things go zoom
High low-end torque on electric motors means high acceleration. It’s easy if the motors and what feeds them are up to it. I think the electric performance cars are just too tempting.
Don't forget things like tires and aerodynamics. The motors don't mean anything if half the energy is wasted because the tires break traction and spin out.
@@Motoboo_Marine Nah tires break traction and spinin seems like a lot of fun to me. BEVs are inherently RWD biased, Massive Torque, very fine quick response throttle control. Seems like the perfect recipe for a Drift Missile.
@@Neojhun I agree that it is fun, but what I was getting at was it makes no difference in acceleration times because you're limited by mechanical grip of tires. Think about why all of the fastest bikes/cars in the world all have really similar 0-60 times. Or why big tuned diesel pickups will have the same acceleration times despite massive power increases.
Now drift racing is another story, since the whole point of it is to break the tires loose as much as possible.
Plus driving an EV hard doesn't strain the motor like it does to a typical piston engine.

Few blinks and you're already zooming at highway speeds. I think the scariest part is how even with the Tesla model s plaid, even the most casual, inexperienced drivers can just hop in and send it with ease. Totally unsuspecting, yet will beat literally every normal and high end sports car on the road today.
I mean, it's not a cheap car and it's worth £130000 in the UK. Just because it is designed like a family car (just like the m5, amg cars), it doesn't mean its a slow car. Most m5's are already beating some sports cars out there, so it's nothing new or that surprising about the plaid tbh

They've been kicked out of NHRA tracks because they run a 1/4 mile faster than 10s and above 150mph without a cage, from the factory. You watched the video, right? The Tesla roadster, as well as it's claimed performance figures are vaporware meant to bring more sales to the company. 0-60 in 1.1 seconds isn't physically possible from an engineering standpoint right now.
Anyone that has an issue with my comment go check out engineering explained's video on the subject. It's not possible
Pretty sure the video's a bit misleading as well. The 1.1 claim is with the "SpaceX" version of the roadster (which I would guess is not road legal with supposed cold gas thrusters) not the normal road legal one. When rockets are used crazy performance is obtainable without specialized tires or suspension (see this 0.55 second 0-100kph water rocket tricycle th-cam.com/video/Q1eQw4ycgQM/w-d-xo.html). Since they do not interact with the road but uses newton's third law of motion, the traction of tires are not an issue anymore, so I would say it's definitely possible for the 1.1 second performance figure. There's a good chance the roadster with rocket will never be built though unfortunately.
