Been running into a bunch of junk new parts. Just did a timing belt on a Dodge 3.5 and the kit I bought was from Gates. The timing belt idler pulley bracket was supplied by GMB and when tightened down to 61 Nm the tensioner would not allow the idler to pivot. I removed the new idler pulley from the GMB bracket and used the factory bracket. Gotta be careful with these parts nowadays.

I know it's not always an option, but when a part is available that's made in the USA how many people are willing to pay more for the better quality? I ordered a wheel bearing for my '00 Blazer the other day, on Rockauto there's a ton of options. Cheapest is $26.99, then the made in the USA Timken is $135.79. I bought the Timken for a number of reasons, but how many others would look at those prices and make the same call?

I owned an AMC Gremlin back in the 70's. I would drive down the road and the engine would die. I would turn the key to start and it would start within seconds. This would only happen once in maybe 20-100 miles. I was afraid to take it to the dealer because they would think i'm nuts. Finally about 2 yrs' later I received a recall that the plugin for the distributor sensor needed cleaned and lubed with electrical grease. Back then they didn't have computers, most machanics didn't have electricial knowledge like today.

    Interesting TSB 🤔
ISSUE: All 1983 through 1990 vehicles with TFI-IV ignition systems may exhibit spark knock/ping if base ignition timing was set after starting the engine with a remote starter. If the engine is started with a remote starter (start wire "S" terminal disconnected at the starter relay) the ignition module will remain in the start mode (timing retarded). Ignition timing will be incorrectly advanced if base timing is set while the module is in the start mode. The engine must be started with the start wire connected, using the ignition switch to correctly set the base ignition timing.

Nobody has the tool to read them, its only possible to set up a test light and read blink codes of the correct pins. Around 2000, the plug changed to OBD we know and love, but requires Forscan software and a unique ELM327 adapter.

This one time on the Ford Truck Enthusiast forums...A guy had a bad EVR or 'EGR vacuum switch,' and he took it apart and fixed it!!! I'm not sure if the coil was interrupted or if the diode was bad or what, but he fixed whatever tiny electronic fault which was affecting the EVR!!!!! I always just went to the junkyard and got one. A 9 volt battery is fine for testing those too. The only problems I've ever had with Ford EVRs and TAB and TAD solenoids were having them slightly explode - as if water had frozen in them. They still tested good electronically, but wouldn't hold air. I also once had a TAB or TAD fail open, electronically.

That was a nice repair, enjoyed the troubleshooting. On the 'distributor', here in New Zealand and Australia the tradies (ie those in the trade, mechanics, parts suppliers) call it the 'dizzy'. In India, it is known as the 'delco' (GM opened its assembly plants there around the 1920's, and AC Delco was the electrical supplier) and in Russia as the 'deestreebeeyootare'. I can only imagine what the Germans call it! Lol

Congratulations, you have great skills. I'm happy parts were found. Thats rare. I'm happy the EGR system was repaired. That ignition system was in its infancy when it was released and the parts today to repair it, if they can be found, are probably from china and untrustworthy. The salvage yards are empty. That owner has a very good truck and you sir are a fine technician. I also never knew that the ignition module needed to see a key cycle in order to allow for base timing adjustment. Reading the service manual is always a good idea. An external pressure regulator and a fuel return line sure brings back memories. Disassembly of the distributor, a fun word to say, was a skill in itself. Also reinstalling it correctly is a skill in itself. That distributor is yet another fine product of the chinnese.

Ah, the US version of the ford 2.9 v6 Cologne engine, i can dream those as the euro wiringlooms are crappy, but the engines are bullitproof and very much used in shorttrack ovalracing, i still have US pushrods, ARP big end and main bolts and a few extra bits to rev it to around 8500 rpm...

Funny how the later US Cologne V6 stroked out to 4.0 Liters does NOT like to rev at all. (Mostly a cylinder head issue though.)
The bottom end is indeed bullet-proof. I recently rebuilt my '95 4.0 at 300,000 miles, and the rod and main bearings looked practically brand new.

@@rhekman you can find the 4.0 overhere in imported explorers but they are rare. Whe had the 2.9 24 valve cosworth engine with 200 horses, really smooth engine, but also from the mid 90ties so an aging beast...

by 3:34 I say bad grounds, battery to frame and body to frame, very likely bad ignition module(often changed without cleaning, thermal grease, dist. body flatness check or over torqued screws), also possibly rusted pickup(pip) or stressed wire to ign. module. bad coil causing upstream damages from lack of secondary tune-ups was a big factor too( still is @ the 100K mile jokers)
    maintenance is key!

The ones that are actually made to last 15 years and make sense when you have to fix them are nice but the extra bullshit In all the new trucks and cars are HELL

Hi Wes your last comment "It is only getting Worse" is unfortunately accurate. More and more often I am receiving a NIB as the acronym or younger generation call it new in box. That has a more accurate description as BWD broken when delivered. This is bad as a back yard hobby mechanic, it must be a whole lot worse as a professional.

At least this all turned out to be surface mounted parts ( more or less ) and so you didn't have to tear the entire engine apart . 👍

using all those connections to get a new scan tool to talk to a 36 year old system is like NASA using modern computers to talk to the Voyageur 1 and 2 space probes launched in the 1970's lol
