ผมย้ายมาอยู่ชนบทในควีนแลนด์ตั้งแต่ ม.2 จนตอนนี้อายุ 40 กว่าปีแล้ว ก็ 30 กว่าปีมาแล้ว แถมไปอยู่ในชนบทแบบ remote ร้องให้แงๆคิดถึงเมืองไทยทุกวัน ไม่มีเอเชีย ไม่มีคนไทย โซเชียลมีเดียไม่มี ไอโฟน อินเตอร์เนตอย่าได้ถามหา ไป รร กลับมา ดู skippy แล้วเข้านอน จึงทำให้ลืมรากเง่าเร็วมาก โดยเฉพาะภาษาไทย จำได้ว่าเมืองที่อยู่ไกลความเจริญมาก (พอกลับไปเที่ยว มันไม่ได้ไกลจากแคนส์เลย ขับรถแค่ 40 นาที ทำไมตอนนั้นรู้สึกว่ามันไกลจากเมืองมากกก) รอจนเรียนจบ ม.6 ถึงได้มีโอกาสกลับไปเยี่ยมเมืองไทย เพราะสมัยนั้นไม่ได้บินกันเกลื่อนแบบสมัยนี้ จำได้ว่ากลับไปวันแรกพูดภาษาไทยได้ทะแม่งๆมาก ติดๆขัดๆ แต่เป็นอยู่แค่ 2 วันก็หาย พอกลับมาออสย้ายเข้าเมืองซิดนีย์ทันทีเพราะต้องการความศิวิไลสุดๆ จนตอนนี้มาลงเอยที่เมลเบิร์น ผ่านมาเยอะเหมือนกันนะนี่เรา ก็ขอขอบคุณเทคโนโลยี ไอโฟน เว็บวอร์ดไทยต่างๆ ทำให้ผมยังได้เขียน และอ่านภาษาไทยอยู่ตลอด แปลกที่ยิ่งแก่ยิ่งภาษาไทยดีขึ้น ทั้งที่ไม่มีโอกาสได้ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน แต่งงานก็แต่งกับคนที่นี่ เพื่อนคนไทยก็ไม่มี ตอนสมัยวัยรุ่นนี่บอกตรงๆว่าลืมจริงๆ
I enjoy watching people who can switch between two languages easily. It's interesting to see them flip over or throw in a few words from the other language, often because some words or concepts are just easier in that language.
She is so sweet. Very impressed with how she’s still able to speak thai very clearly and quite confidently. I moved to Aus when I was abt 7-8yrs old and “home schooled” for abt 6-12 months(?)… reading books and doing exercise activities provided that had Thai and English. Still wasn’t enough for me to speak English with confidence, went to school knowing how to say “good morning teacher” “see you tomorrow, goodbye” - all the basics 😂 There definitely was an identity crisis for me especially when I visited Thailand back and forth WAYYY before COVID. I’m 20 now and feel so proud of my traditions and culture. I embrace the culture and the food a lot more, and very lucky that my partner is so open to trying different Thai foods I cook and so proud of his willingness to learn the language and the culture also:))

Nothing wrong with being proud of your culture, language, and heritage, but you’re a Australian so act like it and not like a Thai or the what not.

I'm from America and I'm about to have my first child w/ my wife who is Thai. I've been SLOWLY learning Thai for the past two years. I'm now at a point with Thai where I can read it but I don't know what 90% of the words mean because my vocabulary is still at a very low capacity. I will be meeting my mother in law and the rest of her family face to face for the first time this Christmas (it's my first time in Thailand after 3+ years of marriage). I'd just like to thank you for being one of the very few English speaking Thai language content creators out there, it's helped alot with my studies to watch interesting content while learning the language.

It's actually insulting for people from all the countries you mentioned when someone from the US says they are from AMERICA which is a continent, not a country 🤷🏼♂️. It's like if my country, France, was actually named the united states of Europe and i just called myself an European (meaning French) when there are another 40 countries in Europe, catch my drift? By the way, I'm a European before to be French. So what if a Mexican wanna say they're from the Americas, what do they say, American? Oh no, wait, they can't... 👍

It would be interesting if Paddy could share his experience of how he met his guests and asking them for the interview.
Speaking of identity crisis, I always get asked about my background and my upbringing. I am Thai by nationality with Khmer ethnicity. When I was in Cambodia, I was instantly regarded as Khmer and was bombarded with greetings in Cambodian. Once I talked to foreign friends(generally whites) in English, they thought I was American or Philipina, besides they would not believe that I am fully Thai due to my clear American Accent. Now, I am so struggling with my real identity. Still, I am so proud to embrace both Thai and Khmer cultures and keep learning Cambodian descriptions for forthur benefits :)
I feel ya. I am Canadian of nationality born and bred. Im born to Cambodia nationals of chinese origins. You just got to embrace all the components of a salad you are XD

Its nice this girl can still speak her dialect. so sad because most of my countrymen Filipino People who migrated to another country at same age like her or even more could no longer speak anymore our Language and some feels like stranger coming home in their own land

I totally understand from her perspective, moving from America to Singapore at 10 years old, although the language is the same, the culture is 100% different. Definitely had an identity crisis being like... "Am I American? Or Singaporean?" it was so hard to adapt to this new culture. But now living there 5 years, I've become so much better, and I do think I am in-between American and Singaporean :)
How do you adapt to 'Singlish' and have it changed your way of speaking?

When I was young, I had more of a culture shock going to Manila from Cebu, than the Philippines to Canada.
At least I understood English and could rudimentary talk with people in Canada.
In Manila, people did not speak Cebuano at all.

I had to learn Italian at 1, Amharic at 11, English at 28 ,Spanish at 34, French at 36...and Thai/Lao at 55 ...now at 67 I start to reverse engineering . Bilinguals are lucky.

Have thought about it! If i was going to do it, I’d probably want to do it in person but just don’t have the time at the moment.

เคยไปทำงานที่ อเมริกา กับอังกฤษ แล้วก็เที่ยวนาน ๆ ในประเทศต่าง ๆ ก็มีหลากหลายวัฒนธรรมที่ให้เข้าต้องเรียนรู้
จะบอกว่าอยู่ที่ไหนก็ดีหมดคงไม่ใช่ อยู่ที่จริตของแต่ละคนมากกว่า ถ้าผมเลือก ผมก็คงอยู่ที่ไทย แม้มันจะมีบางอย่างที่ผมไม่ชอบในสังคมไทย แต่ผมก็หลบเลี่ยงมันได้ แต่ตอนอยู่ที่เมกาฯ คือสังคมค่อนข้างโหดเอาเรื่อง แม้จะมีเพื่อนดี ๆ อยู่เมกาเยอะ แต่ก็มีหลาย ๆ ทีที่เกือบเอาชีวิตไม่รอดจากสังคมเมกันเข่นกัน
