    Great video. I think we forget the most important component in any shooting activity. The shooter. We have a young guy in my club over here in the UK who has the one and only RimX's I've ever seen. They are incredibly expensive here. He had it custom built with what looks like a scaffold pole for a barrel and a very expensive chass. It cost him thousands. He won the first two competitions he tried. Then along came one of our "older" members with a 50/60+ year old BSA martini henry single shot target rifle. The kid with the RimX consistently comes second (sometimes third or worse) to the old timer with the BSA. in 50- and 100-meter bench rest comps. The old timer can sure shoot. Doesn't matter how much you pour into a gun if your shooting fundamentals aren't right you won't win. Love your work. Looking forward to the next one.

      loved those BSA's my Dad had an old one ( non Target version) and I used it round the farm for years, it was beautifully accurate

      You might consider cleaning the suppressor because they do collect carbon over time after about every three hundred bullets

    • @jon1801
      @jon1801 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There gets a stage where a CZ is no longer a CZ imo. And the cost of custom builds is beyond many of us so I have to ask what is the point? My 457 groups well enough to a hundred metres with all ammo brands, including none lead ( it is used for pesting and club ) And I agree, the shooter is the biggest factor. Guess that old maxim "a fool and his money" is true.

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Jon, a rifle is only a tool and that tool is only as good as it's user. When you asked "what's the point?" The point is to enjoy this hobby. Some of us are involved competitivly in NRL22, PRS or Benchrest. This tool we are using for this sport at some point becomes inadequate to compete at the top level, when YOU accuire the skills.
      If you feel your rifle will perform with the best, then I highly encourage you to join practicescore and sign up for a local 100m Benchrest, NRL22 match. As the saying goes, "You don't know what you don't know". Complaining about how expensive these custom builds are is like complaining how expensive a pro golfer's club set is....

  • @johnnyrc9304
    @johnnyrc9304 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Consistent with my experiences with Rimfire. I shot NRA smallbore Silhouette and Rimfire PRS for years. I found that all rifles are picky for ammo, and when changing ammo, it takes about 10 rounds for the new ammo to re-foul the barrel with it's own dirt... so to speak. I also found Rimfires do NOT like clean bores. In fact, I did NOT clean my rimfires (match ammo only) until end of season, or about 4000 rounds, and then it would take about 50 rounds to get them properly fouled again. I shot mostly CZ (452 back then), and I never saw much for tuners in the open classes until the 2010's. If you're on a budget, go stock CZ, find the ammo it likes best, and use that leftover $$ NOT spent on a Vudu22 to shoot 1000's of rounds. One upgrade you didn't consider, I always put a Timney trigger on my competition rifles, a lot of times the only upgrade I did. That consistent trigger pull helped immensely. A+ Video, thanks.

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thanks for sharing your expirence and agree. Yes, I left the trigger upgrade out of this because it can be viewed as improving the shooters ability to shoot more consistently vs the rifle. Also sets the base line to learn trigger control first before jumping to a 10oz trigger and develop bad habits.

    • @OTRIAR
      @OTRIAR หลายเดือนก่อน

      I totally agree. I was in the fly fishing industry for many years. So many anglers get caught up in buying the best gear possible, thinking it will make them a better angler. The trout don't care how much your rod costs. If they can afford it, it's no big deal, but at the end of the day, it's usually the wizard and not the wand. Just like spending that extra cash on a guide vs the latest reel is going to exponentially make you a better angler, spending the extra cash on ammo and practicing fundamentals will make you a better shooter. Then make the jump to something spendier, assuming you'll still love it after spending that time.

    As someone who hunts as well as range shoots a rifle that achieves cold bore + point of aim = point of impact and then goes on to shoot a ~ 0.7 MOA or less group including the cold bore is a shooter, no question. That lack of cold bore deviation is vitally important as a hunter. Congratulations on a series of informative and well thought out videos.

    I think a lot of people these days are just addicted to blowing money on accessorizing. I somewhat understand doing so if a person is competing and there is money on the line, but most guys just love to spend that money, regardless if they get results or not. I don't think most even look at cost / benefit analysis. I don't mind spending 3 or 4x what a stock rifle costs IF I get 3-4x the results. I can't justify that kind of cost to shoot a .050 or .100 smaller group, but then again I'm not a competitive shooter either.
    I'm enjoying the channel and honesty. Found you a couple days ago and subbed. Take care.

    I know this is an old video, but I hope that you will still answer my question:
    When you changed to the MDT ACC chassis you complained that it wasn't balanced. I could see that being important if you were standing or, perhaps kneeling. But, when you're not actually holding the rifle (bags or a rest) what difference does it make? From what I've seen at benchrest matches weight is more important and the more the better.

    Love my 457. I have the pro varmint model and it shoots way better than I can. I screwed up at the beginning of the PRS season and put myself in production division. Shot the match, took 2nd, was happy. Then I reread the rules the next day. Immediately contacted our MD and told him nope, put me in open division. My glass/rifle cost exceeded the cost limit. (Ran a Athlon midas tac scope, by msrp it put me $41 above the limit.) So I decided screw it, stay in open and bought a KRG Bravo stock for it. lol (Cheaper than new glass) Only thing I need to do with it is get the Area 419 rail for the scope so I can move it forward a bit more. The want to do, new trigger. Other than that I'm just going to run it. It shoots amazing with sk match rifle ammo. I use rimfire PRS as training for centerfire PRS.

    Now I want to look into the tuner. But my barrels are not threaded, so more cost if I go that way for a tighter group. Wish I could post my group with both calibers at 50 yards from bench rest

    I have a CZ that had the 'cracking' you observed with the borescope in your video - CZ 455/457 Build series | Initial Accuracy - The cracking runs from muzzle end inside about 2" down . The rifle tosses fliers with every type of ammo I tried. I was shooting factory class at my local club, but this barrel put the stop to that.
    Not sure If I want to chance buying another CZ barrel or just put a 'real' barrel on it and shoot unlimited class. Depressing.

      @@EagleEyeShooting that’s what I did with my pro Varmint . The xrs is a huge improvement ergonomically. However the 16.5” barrel only extends beyond the end of the chassis by only maybe 1 1/2”. A little more barrel length would be more visually appealing . One thing tho, my rifle shoots great in both stocks . Any accuracy improvements I’ve gained by changing to the chassis is simply because I’m more comfortable behind it , and the extra weight makes it steadier on the benchrest .

      Thank-you. I would recommend the Athlon Helos BTR Gen 2 over the Arkens. The reticle has 2 tenth increments which is needed for 22lr over Arken. The glass is also clearer on the higher magnification. If your looking for more benchrest, Athlon makes a SFP 10-40x56

    Hoping the one I have coming shoots as well. Nix the heavy barrel. Also will be taking advantage of their switchable barrels. The other positive about the 457 is it’s still selling for the same price a 452 was 20+ years ago. In a world where gun prices have escalated 50-100% Value for dollar. Thanks.

      Prone is the most stable position to shoot from. That's why F Class, small bore F Class, ELR shooters all shoot prone. Besides is also a PITA to lug around a table to my shooting area. I'm healthy enough to shoot prone comfortably

    Don't disagree with the assessment of the suppressor as to grit and debris in the bore and action but except for the highest level of competition I think the suppressor almost always increases accuracy for a variety of reasons especially with less experienced shooters. please detail the device(s) used to film and record the shot placement. Camera? Phone? Software?

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out The Xring channel. Me and him both have showed instances where suppressors degrade accuracy in rifles. Or in this instance help. Again, this is from expirence with MANY rifles I've built and tested

    • @jwvica01
      @jwvica01 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EagleEyeShooting I will check it out. I appreciate your input on this. I prefer not to shoot unsuppressed so I am very interested in maximizing suppressed accuracy. But I'm also in a much shallower end of the pool. I have a couple of rifles that can perform just over 1moa suppressed, with minimal cold shift and with just above average ammo. Which I consider to be outstanding performance. I have never been able to achieve sub-moa performance (past 50 yd) and your videos have helped me understand why.

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now im a big advocate of testing for yourself. When chasing accuracy, it is a process of variable elimination. Unfortunately in 22LR, the variables you cannot eliminate are in the ammunition. When you look at the data and those who shoot 22lr in competition for accuracy, none of those accomplished shooters use a suppressor. A suppressor adds a variable in this equation. Now whats the benefit of shooting suppressed for a 22lr besides sound reduction? 22lr subsonic is already hearing safe with 20+" barrels unsuppressed... now you can go down this rabbit hole chasing accuracy shooting 22lr suppressed adding tuners and what not, or look at the irrefutable evidence that suppressors in 22lr in regards to accuracy is not a good choice

    • @jwvica01
      @jwvica01 ปีที่แล้ว

      watched x-ring's vid on the comparison w/vudoo and I would tend to agree as it pertains to purpose built PRS platforms for competition. He did not do the math but looked like a 1-1.5 moa performance hit @300. (even tho the sample size was small) Taking out the wind probably much more as the unsuppressed vertical string was significantly better. I do still believe that for multi use rimfire platform advantages of suppressed outweigh disadvantages inside 100y. As barrel length and range decrease, advantage of suppression increases. I agree with your assessment that it just adds another variable to a long list of variables that have to be managed when striving for the highest achievable accuracy.

      To be able to shoot longer distance. You end up with more travel on the scope
      I have a 50MOA on mine
      Shot it at 400 yards and repeatedly was hitting a 10” plate that was 69 MOA and i still have a lot left.

      The wind is the biggest factor. At 300 yards you can have 3’ of wind and the wind slightly change and then you are off 2’
      I read that at 300 yards a 22LR has a similar trajectory as a 308 does at 1000 yards

    You cant change ammo. With the EC tuner you need to tune each ammo separately.

    • @EagleEyeShooting
      @EagleEyeShooting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't totally agree. From my expirence, tuners allow the user to find the resonate frequency of the barrel. Once you find it, set it and forget it. The chamber design, quality of the barrel and its jam point play the bigger role in accuracy of the ammo. Ive had great success with the barrels I sort and chamber with a tuner set which allowed for a plethora of match grade ammo to shoot consistently in the .3"s and sub 1" at 100 yards.

    I wanted to thank you very much for your video. I am especially interested in your opinions of different ammunition and the mechanics of equipment. I am an accuracy "nut" that is a bit on the frugal side meaning I don't realize the same success as competition shooters. The question I'm constantly asking myself is where do I draw the satisfaction line in equipment and components based on investment; that is where your opinions aid me greatly.
