The Mormon Ship is called the Nauvoo. Its a generational ship designed by the Tycho Corporation to travel Tau Ceti, 12 light years distant on a 100 year- 1 way slower than light speed trip to colonize a new star system. In the Expanse Universe, religion is rarely ever discussed and assumed to be on the back burner of society structure, therefore the Mormons have gone to considerable expense to use Tycho Station, the largest mobile construction station in the system, led by Fred Johnson the political leader of the OPA to create the ship. The Mormons plan to establish a new religious colony similar to the Pilgrims at Plymouth rock in a new solar system separate from the OPA, Mars, and Earth governments.
No spoilers: You guys are gonna love season two. Season one and two are from the first book in the series. The first season is basically the first half of the book (which is a lot of setup, world building, etc) and the second half of the book is when it all pops off and speeds up, so that's what season 2 does. In regards to the Mormons, there are a bunch of religions on this show but the Mormons do take a front seat fairly often and I believe the reason why is because 1) Their ship. They are having that ship (Navoo) made so they can go start anew in a different solar system. 2) Some religions are more active in their spreading the word of their faith than others. Mormons are famous now for going door to door, so it makes sense in the future they'd be all over the solar system (Earth, belt, Mars) spreading their religion.
They're also a group that has (historically) embraced the idea of "go forth and multiply." On Earth, with the severe population controls in place to try to slow the swelling numbers of people, this rubs the wrong way, and Mars and the Belt are fairly inhospitable overall, despite the efforts of the Martians to terraform their planet. A new planet offers the potential to not only start over, but start without the weighted boot of government and logistics on their collective neck.
The Mormons also have a tradition of shrewd investing. If any non-government or non-corporation could accumulate enough wealth for that journey, it's gonna be the Mormons.
A close comparison for Eros would be more like Atlantic City; it had a massive boom period while colonizing the Belt was big, but now it's a fading star. The book has a bit more detail, but it basically explains that with Ceres, ships want to be in and out quickly to avoid racking up dock fees. For Eros, with so little ship traffic, ships can sit for months for next to nothing, and the only real draw is large amounts of cheap casinos and the sort of things that would appeal to travelers looking for a break. On the whole, it's way past its prime, breaking down, and generally ignored as a relic of bygone days.
Really glad you guys are sticking with this show, even if its not the most popular on the Normies channel. Its my favorite show in recent years and definitely picks up big time in Season 2! :D
*No Spoilers* The stealth ship is, or rather was, hiding in a crevice in an asteroid, and the torpedo that Holden and crew fired destroyed just the ship, not the whole asteroid. Eros and Ceres are both human settlements in hollowed out asteroids. Ceres is the biggest asteroid in the asteroid belt, and would be considered a small planet if it weren't grouped inside the asteroid belt. Eros is a much smaller asteroid, but still huge compared to most asteroids, and is bigger than the one that killed the dinosaurs
Yeah, and aren't the missiles that the Rocinante's armed with nuclear tipped? Those things are Martian state of the art ship killers: they won't take out a planet but they coulld sure as shit take out a small city ... or an asteroid.
There are two types of torpedoes in the Expanse, Plasma and Nuclear. Plasma torpedoes intentionally drop containment on a fusion reaction right before they hit the target, blasting a small area (compared to nuclear) with a substance hotter than the sun. You can see that when the stealth armada's torpedoes hit the Donnager, the 'explosion' is slow-to-expand and its blue. Plasma torpedoes are more for surgical strikes, because a single nuke hitting a target will completely vaporize the ship - just like it did the Anubis in this episode. The stealth ships used plasma because they wanted to board the Donnager later. The reason why nukes aren't used 99% of the time is that they are large and emit radiation, making them easier to track and neutralize with PDCs (point defense cannons).
i dont understun how the asteroids are in stasis. Did men stop its course when they colonized it? Is it still on some sort of course? Is the whole"belt" traveling in some kind of loop? whats going on?
@@Aemond2024 everything in space is always moving, in orbit around the sun, and often on other trajectories. To make something "stay still" in space, you match your course with the other object. If you go right into Season 2 & finish it in time, you can maybe have the whole crew react to Season 3. That would be great. It's supposed to start early next year.

The Nauvoo was named after an actual town that existed in Illinios; in 1846 it had a population of around 15000. Because of it's location and the fact that it was a new town created by mormons and native americans (who were treated as equals) the neighboring people raided the town, killed people, stole their land, and burnt the town. This caused the mormans to have to abandon the town.. They'd been pushed out of everywhere.. so they took on a trek across the country too close to winter.. because they had no choice...and many died. Those that survived founded the state of Utah and after were weary of people moving near them.. Anyway the ship Nauvoo was named after that town.
Oh my gosh, that's so cool! I didn't realize that it was actually connected, I thought it was just a cool angel-lookin' thing. Sorry to necro your comment, but that is an awesome fact.
The Flood doesn't react when technology is around though? Unless you aren't referring to the Flood parasitic species from the Halo game series in which case ignore me. The only thing from Halo that does that is the Thano-lekgolo, a special type of lekgolo (those worms inside the Hunters' armour and the Scarab walker that make them work). They can track radio waves and electromagnetic signatures.
cannonfodder343 Yes, I was referring to the Flood from Halo; and you're correct, the Flood isn't activated by EM radiation like this stuff seems to be, but they couldn't really do an EXACT copy on this show. It also doesn't present itself as crystalline tumors in infected hosts, either. I was thinking more in terms of them both collecting biomass to create more complex and advanced forms of themselves.
CHI-Gang, if you all were in a ship, what would you name it? who would be captain/pilot/engineer? Also, the way I understood the Mormon presence in space is that it is really the only popular religion today that focuses a lot on the cosmos other planets and outer space. They believe in alien life and other inhabited planets. Maybe this drove them to be among the first to leave earth, mars and now the whole damn solar system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_cosmology
The Roci fired a torpedo with a nuclear warhead into the Anubis, which vaporized the ship and a large portion of the asteroid 'twas hidden on (that was the white light you saw). What Fred Johnson was looking at was the logs from the Donnager showing the drive-signatures produced by the engines of the six ships that attacked her (think of transponder codes as license-plates and drive signatures as VIN numbers).
Holden is the Roci's captain. He makes decisions and he accepts responsibility for the consequences of those decisions. He also accepts responsibility for the welfare of his crew.
