  • On September 7th 1997, Gerd Albrecht conducted the amassed forces of the German National Youth Orchestra, the Prague Chamber Choir, and Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno in a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem in remembrance of the victims of Theresienstadt concentration camp. The featured soloists were Olga Romanko (soprano), Liliana Bizineche (mezzo-soprano), Aquiles Machado (tenor) and Simon Yang (bass).
The concert was held in an open-air courtyard within the ancient fortress in the Czech town of Terezin that once housed the camp and was attended by various dignitaries. The choice of Verdi's Requiem for the performance the was especially prescient as it is well known that interred Jewish camp victims performed the piece on several occasions, all the while deportations to the ghettos and extermination camps in Poland were occurring.

A dear friend was part of this amazing chorus, participating to honor those who lost their freedom and their lives. I'm so glad to be able to listen to this wonderful music, for so many reasons.

Goed om deze te horen als alternatief voor de uitvoering in de Beurs van Berlage vanavond (Zo 3 mei 2020).
En, ... goed dat dit uitgevoerd blijft worden.
