Back when he was pulled off the air, I hated it. A lot of rugs had been pulled out from under me in my life, and this was yet another one. I am from Connecticut, but at that time I was living in Atlanta. On one particulary boring night, as I tied one on, I decided to call the Rooney residence in Cos Cob, Connecticut. I ended up getting his wife, as he was "out." I proceded to rant about how, "...this is proposterous!..." ---when asked about his time off of the air when he finally came back, he thanked those he knew for their support, and said thank you for those he did not know...har har hardee har har! I miss him.
you would always look forward to hearing andy's remarks at the end of 50 minutes - he made a fine art out of being a little bit upset about all kinds of things, in a good-natured way, giving common sense a rare chance to be communicated over the air waves... :)
Having watched Andy Rooney from the first time he appeared on 60 Minutes, my favorite Andy Rooney segment remains the one featured in early 1987 when he was talking about why some products have strange prices like the price of gasoline. To prove his point, he drove to a gas station which sold unleaded gas at $.999 a gallon, bought one gallon, gave the attendant a dollar and then asked "Where's my change?" The attendant tells Andy that there is no change because a gallon of gas costs a dollar. And then Andy tells him, "No it doesn't. It costs $.999". The attendant then tells Andy that the price is rounded up to a dollar. So Andy asks him, "Then why don't you round up the price to a dollar on your marquee?". And that to me defined who Andy Rooney was. He gave voice to all of us who are exasperated by life's little oddities but do not speak up about them. Andy was the champion of the "little guy".
@WiseGuyJeffrey He was a helluva a guy..... the man is from another lifetime ago and a total different world than me, I'm a kid who grew up in the hood an hip hop which I don't think he was a huge fan of but neither was my Grandpa which is how I became aware of this man to begin with but it was Andy's realness, his uncanny wit and probly those crazy lookin eyebrows that made me a fan, u are right Jeff he was amazing and we need more real people like him in the world.
I am shocked at so many vitriolic comments and fowl language in many comments regarding Andy's style or opinions. Andy's role was to engender CRITICAL THINKING among his viewers. It was a form of role-playing. As you watched him or read his books, you just had to laugh or disagree...but you did stop and reevaluate your own opinions, biases, prejudices; and look for facts on many issues that may have been unknown or disregarded. Thanks Andy! (From a 28-year teacher of American Government who copied a bit of Andy's approach to making my students think more critically!).

I always enjoyed his cynicism! Made me laugh often. I loved his eyebrows the most. I miss him too.
Me and my family have watched you since I was a little kid. You always made us laugh and I want to thank you for that.
