great video! Thanks so much for doing the map-zoom-out of your location. For us that are planing our journey this an HUGE help. Location, Cost of Marina, customs etc all helps so much for the planning. THANK YOU!
Respectfully suggest that when you finally replace those Forestay bolts you buy larger high quality Bolts rather than Setscrews or even threaded Bar, and after having to re drill the the forestay support plate to take the larger bolts you can use large 'spacer washers' coming up from underneath fitted onto the Hex bolts to support that serious load so that same doesn't pull through.and Double Nuts on same.. Belt and Braces, Just a thought as you will sleep easier in a Rough seas even looking to the way the aft Push pit is secured to cover all bases...great upload..
Good stuff! I really enjoy you channel. I love the design of your boat, it's so unique! Thanx for taking the time to share your adventures!! < 3 ;) Grrrrr.
Med to heavy displacement , full keal, solid dodger, good autopilot & no phones , steady breeze , fresh fish & lovely 1st mate ....Im gonna get another boat . enjoy
That forestay problem would make your blood run cold. The weakness of stainless steel threads when exposed to seawater, then de-oxygenated. The chlorine reaction wakes up and splits the nut. Next time, you may find that a nylock nut keeps some of the seawater out of the thread.
Hey guys, thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the vlog. I would blank out your passport numbers from these videos tho. 2 months down the line you might inadvertently show the 2 or 3 missing ones. Fair winds and smooth seas🤙
We really enjoy your videos; great editing and music. One of the ones we watch again and again and we always find new things. We are hoping to do what you do, someday...Anyways, just a question: what kind of cameras do you use? Thanks!
Did you ever watch The Onedin Line about the rise of an ambitious sea captain to become a successful owner of a shipping company? I liked the first two seasons. I think it was filmed on the south coast of England. Captain Baines was great.
Great video ! Very informative and entertaining. I especially enjoyed the segment showing your navigation plotter with the various sea-route models you guys could take across the Atlantic. And Ben, I’m quite impressed with how you can seemingly repair just about anything on board that breaks down. Where did you learn your engineering skills?
Rusty Comer hi Rusty and thanks for the comments. I have never had the money to pay for ayone else to fix anything since day dot, so learnt the hard way with cars properties etc. I work in construction and fixing up old buildings and have a degree in industrial design years ago. That with a little help from others via the Internet one can just about get your head around anything. Really most of the time I have no other option. Thanks for watching and fair winds.
Sailing SV Bora Bora Thanks for the prompt reply Ben. I would consider myself to be somewhat handy around the house and, enjoy finding unique “out of the box” ways of solving problems, but I am thoroughly amazed by all the many different skill sets you have acquired. You remind me of a good friend of mine who seems to instinctively know how to repair, modify or build from scratch just about anything. If I had to pick a single word to describe both you guys - that word would be “capable”. And that, my new friend, is a great characteristic for the captain of a sailing vessel to have! Anyway, thanks again for all the hard work you and Nikki put into creating these episodes. And to show my appreciation and to help keep SV Bora Bora sailing, I’m signing up to be one of your monthly patrons. Looking forward to following along on your grand journey! Cheers
There's an old adage. " Galvanized is twice as strong as it looks and stainless is half as good as it looks." Commercial boats all over the world ALL use Hot dipped galvanized for just about everything. Even the all stays on my 34ton fishing boat were galvanized. They lasted 50 years. Same with the hardware and turnbuckles, All galvanized. Just saying. On commercial vessels we steer very clear of stainless anything. You've got two excellent mounting bolts now. if they are commercial grade that is.
What make of boat do you have...Just started to look at your video's...I did not see your complete job on forestay...did you put lock nuts on thread bar...or some form of lock tight...resin..Ken.
Ken Wood the boat is a 1974 Victory 40. On the underside I put the nuts on and punched the edge of the stud over the nut and on the top used a lock nuts, on each. It stayed fast and would have lasted for years, but I relplaced it in Antigua when I found some suitable new 316. Thanks for watching, fair winds.
SV Gitane hi there and thank you for the comments, anticlock cut bits will eventually unscrew a broken of stud leaving the thread in the hole undamaged. If your lucky and you play your cards right. We wish you the all the very best on your adventure. Fair winds, calm seas and thanks for watching.
Their boat was a Rival 31. A real tough as old boots pocket ocean cruiser which gave berth to a long line of tough blue water boats of increasing size.

Ok.... They're on a beautiful boat, they're in the middle of the Atlantic, they're Barbecuing freshly caught tuna and they're having a beer.... No... This is not envy, this us unabashed jealousy. :)

menthou hay, I know. The wind noise through this episode was so bad I had to resort to EQing it out as best I could. The result is tiny. Our camera has the mic holes so close to the lense we can't fit any kind of rat, plus all this footage is already shot. I guess we need pro cameras like Delos, but that's way out of our budget. We will keep trying to improve regardless. Thanks for watching.
Not a tuna, my friend....a bonito (bastard cousin of the tuna). I do not eat them...very bloody, oily and way too fishy tasting....but very common. On BRUNO (55' Bene...watch my video) crossing over, a crewman caught several that the crew (Dutch) ate (I refused to eat them). I never had the heart to tell him they were "trash fish".
there is nothing like crusing a couple of hundred miles off shore far enough from land to have a truly black night sky seeing all of the stars

Thanks for the videos. We will hopefully be following in your wake very soon. Curious though why you needed the drill bits to be anti-clockwise?

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't realise it was threaded I thought it was just a hole with a nut on each end. Thank you!
Can those freak waves come from any direction or will they be coming with the wind or primary/secondary swells??
Those guys next to you look so cool. Did you see their bucket for stopping hitting the quay? Genius! And how smooth was their exit?!
