I loved this video. I was particularly struck by the reality of a northerly crossing at 29:00. Ben is off camera and Nicki is describing her life in the rear cabin. While she is talking I look up at all the nice artwork on the bulkhead and realize that this is their home. They are sailing their home around and the loose items are telling a story of the rising and falling of the swell and less than a meter from the back of her head is the sea, with all those steep waves. But their little ship is keeping them safe, holding them close and carrying them east. It has a poetry to it, when one is sitting in the comfort of a chair watching it all unfold. Thanks for sharing.
What it must be like without the moonlight to reveal those monsters...know they were even bigger than they look and they look really big! Nice capture.

Fantastic video. 30 pus knots and only one reef... you're making good progress., and you make it look easy. Flip flops and no life jackets, that's the advantage of a nice safe enclosed cockpit and good planning. A lot of boats would be slamming badly under these conditions but yours is taking it in it's stride. Traditional keel shapes work, and no sea sickness!
Great sailing and photography, which is better than quite a few other sailing sites who potter around the Bahamas etc. You guys and Free Range Sailing and Ran are my top three 🏴👍

Great show. I like when you show the gauges and tell us what sails are up and how you’re running. Also whats on the Mizen too. The lack of music is fantastic as the boat sounds are much more entertaining. I also like the vids of the boat sailing with no commentary. . That said your on camera bits are informative and interesting. Two very photogenic people just being themselves. I am nearing 70 and my health sucks. Sailing along with you guys is like a giant elixir.
I like listening to your safety ideas. I was told that my backup needs a backup up plan so I rigged three coolers with some emergency provisions tied together and ready to toss overboard in case I sunk. My lifeline was attached to them so if I fell over I had enough to eat and drink until the sharks or Coast Guard showed up. It will be at least a year before I am back on the water. You are a good teacher

Its always said that a camera doesn't do a waves size justice but often from a Cabin Port Light where you are at near sea level you can get a good idea of their height.
An experienced old salt suggests eat your food out of cheap stainless steel dog bowls when on a passage. Very stable on the table or your lap! Nice hammock chair on the helm. Oh at night you should have red cockpit lights on!

I’ve watched waves crash over the bow on an aircraft carrier USS Ranger going through a cyclone. We had 21 chains per F-14 tied to the steel flight deck. We were off the coast of Taiwan going through a cyclone on the way to Desert Storm Dec 1990 USN 89-95 VF-1 Wolfpack. I hate to ask this but have y’all been hit by a rogue wave? That thirty minutes just flew by it’s almost like a movie and hate it when it ends! Thank you for sharing such an amazing odyssey back to England. If the AIS alarm goes off do y’all turn the motor on and bring the sails down or is there not enough time to bring the sails down? I can’t imagine a supertanker doing 23 knots in that sea state heading directly for you and having to avoid a collision. Do y’all avoid the shipping lanes entirely or can you? Sorry, I’m just trying to put myself on the boat while watching since I spent a lot of time on the ocean in a bit larger boat. Hi there, sounds like you have had some interesting times on the ocean. A long time ago I very nearly joined the royal navy, if I had I may have had similar experiences. If the worst did happen and we had to turn back to collect one of us from the water we would motor sail back past them. No head sail. Just main sail and then approach into the wind, sails flogging until along side. Hope it never happens!

Some proper sporty conditions there. Wind against current with those wind speeds would have been a nightmare instead of a bit uncomfortable. How did the wind vane manage on keeping your course?
It's only what I read in Jimmy Cornell 's 'World Cruising Routes' book. Could be a false alarm, but I had a friend check their C maps for that area and that also said 5 metres. Navionics, admiralty and Imray say 800m or more. I guess it's a small area only ever experienced by very few. Jimmy gives the coordinates and that's what I plotted on my chart and it's near Corner Seamount. So for me, an area to be avoided in rough conditions.
Great video- safe travels! Novice question: Most sailing ships have a dingy boat incase capsizing main vessel or worse. Most practice emergencies in calm waters. If the main 40’ boat was compromised in terrible weather what actually is a tiny dingy going to do in exact terrible water conditions? Again, my guess is it’s better than being in water but can it remain afloat?
We and most boats (should) carry an emergency inflatable life raft, which self inflates on a quick release system and has some emergency safety equipment within (this is not the same as a dinghy which is also carried on board but used only for going between boat and shore). The life raft should only be used as a last resort ie. your main vessel is sinking, so it's the better option in that case, but certainly wouldn't be a pleasant place to be in gale force conditions!
What is the name of this Seamount thats only so deep? 23.11.. was unaware that there was such a shallow spot out this far in the Atlantic, i cant quite make out the Depth the Skipper said this is very intresting Bazzar, thought those Seamounts were well down, ive been at Sea since 1975 its my life..i was under the impression the Rockaway at 848 M was the Shallow est Spot out there..am Bamboozled ?
Do you have the Jimmy Cornell World Cruising Routes book? He talks about it in there, in the Bermuda to Azores section. Its called Corner Seamount. The area is charted as 1000s of metres deep, but sailors have reported seeing sunken vessels on the bottom only a few metres down....in fact a friend told us that C-Maps has been updated to show a 5 metre depth but not Navionics etc as far as we know. Pretty scary stuff when you're that far offshore!

I ask you on behalf of myself and many other yachtsmen. You mention Corner Seamount south east of Newfoundland. I have checked my North Atlantic charts both Mercator and Gnomonic but it is not marked on any of them. Please can you tell us in Latitude and Longitude the exact position of this hazard. Thank you.

@@roderickmchardy3650 yes we get all the weather and ocean data via satellite through a software package called Predict Wind, which is for offshore weather routing.
I'm not a sailor but I have considered the idea of this trailing "lifeline" a few times - I think I'd want to tie the line on to a permanently fixed hitch, relatively high up on the stern line (rather than a deck cleat) ....have a buoy on the end of the line, with a few prusik loops pre tied above it - that way any MOB would have a means to get back up that rope and back on to the boat by themselves if all else fails. Sound daft ? ....any reason why nobody seems to do that ?
Not daft at all. We have done that before on our east to west Atlantic passage. We tried it out with boat hove to and only making about 1 knot through the water. Even that slow it was really hard to pull yourself back to the boat! I thimk impossible at anything over 5kts.
I bet it would be really hard aye ! ..... A few times I've seen people throw a tow line out, but they always seem to secure it at deck level - which I imagine would be essentially useless, that's what made me think about it 😟

I had a quick read of the Book, esp from Page 143 Bermuda to Azores AN125 and i can`t find any reference to any Shallows?

I'm not a sailor but I have considered the idea of this trailing "lifeline" a few times - I think I'd want to tie the line on to a permanently fixed hitch, relatively high up on the stern line (rather than a deck cleat) ....have a buoy on the end of the line, with a few prusik loops pre tied above it - that way any MOB would have a means to get back up that rope and back on to the boat by themselves if all else fails. Sound daft ? ....any reason why nobody seems to do that ?
Not daft at all. We have done that before on our east to west Atlantic passage. We tried it out with boat hove to and only making about 1 knot through the water. Even that slow it was really hard to pull yourself back to the boat! I thimk impossible at anything over 5kts.
I bet it would be really hard aye ! ..... A few times I've seen people throw a tow line out, but they always seem to secure it at deck level - which I imagine would be essentially useless, that's what made me think about it 😟
