  • This is the long awaited video of what it feels like to drive my scratch built Mclaren F1 LM with its twin turbo intercooled V12 BMW engine. I built this Mclaren F1 LM replica over a course of three years (almost full time).

    Best replica of an F1 I have seen. Apart from the wheels & front wheel arches, this would fool most people looking externally.
    Internally with it's instrument display, it's as much a Mclaren F1 GTR as it is an LM.
    Still 98% of people, would not have a clue, what a mclaren F1 is when driving on the road. They probably think its a ferrari or Lamborghini. But for people who know, they must be shocked seeing this thing driving on the road.
    Great job, you should be proud of your self. Love it.

      @@sjfk1306 yeah, why not? First time I visited Mclaren at Albert Drive in 2003ish there were 3 there (Gordon's in for a faulty diff bearing, Phil Collin's manager's in for repairs plus 1 other), there's 4 on the boulevard at MTC where I used to work (XPLM, XP5, Tokyo Ueno, Davidoff long-tail), plus I've rarely seen fewer than 3 or 4 privately owned at Goodwood FoS: Atkinson's, the Lark red one, Harrod's (I had a long chat with the guy who brought it there in about 2010), the red/yellow one, the dull blue one with the red interior (IIRC) are some of the ones I remember.
      My son and I even got to sit in XPLM at Goodwood (I told him to remember this as it's a special moment unlikely to be repeated) and I've sat in Tokyo Ueno at FoS
      after hours on a different visit.
      There was even 1 sitting in the shop window of a showroom in park lane for many years I walked past a few times about 1/4mile from my g/f's halls of residence
      They're not that hard to spot if you put in the effort!

    I totally applaud the effort you have gone through and the result you have achieved, please don't take the following comment as a negative statement, but purely as a helpful observation. At 8:04 it looks as if your driveshafts may be rubbing on the lower control arms, I would recommend checking the clearances through full travel suspension travel. Do you have a limited slip diff? If you do and a drive shaft breaks the rear torque steer can be quite unexpected and veer you off the road/track - which nobody following your cool project wants to see.

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for you feedback. You are very attentive to detail! You are very right in saying it would be bad for a shaft to break (it did actually happen once in the beginning because the shafts weren't strong enough). The rubbed off paint that you see was actually caused as a result of me checking the travel clearances without the srings installed. And yes I did need to modify the lower control arms a bit (with a hammer) 😜

    • @DIY-V12
      @DIY-V12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Absolute Genius masterclass!!! The exhausted work you put into this is mind blowing. I’m speechless. I truly understand what you went through to make this possible and honestly I’m sad I didn’t get to help you build it. The wide breadth of skillset required for everything is something I’m envious of and wish I could have learned with you throughout this process. Even basic things are a mystery such as how you achieved symmetry and what dimensions or schematics were you referencing to follow as a guide? Sure there’s some unique replica characteristics but it’s flawless in my eyes and I almost would prefer owning this over the original… almost. It seems more rare and special to me. In hindsight, sure a different engine would be ideal, the front wheels could be more narrow and flare could be less. Doesn’t really matter it is GORGEOUS and hard to stop staring at it. I wish I could learn from you all the amazing fabrication techniques as we build another! Did you fix the steering wheel alignment or is it perfectly straight? I’m sure there are quirks you have to live with but it’s perfection in my eyes. I want to come help perfect it further with you and be considered for taking stewardship of the car someday, please!

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow man I feel humbled by your praise. It was really just a labour of love. I had to learn and figure out and make many mistakes to complete the car.
      It really felt like completing a puzzle but having to make the pieces one at a time.
      A lot (as in a lot a lot) of time was spent just looking at and measuring and cross referencing everything I did with pictures and scale models (and left to right). And even after all that there are still some discrepancies that only came to light after the fact.
      Thanks again for your kind words!

    I was wondering where you sourced your motor from but I looked at the description and found out.
    I’m thinking IF I ever built one I’d use the Toyota GZ (the only V12 they ever made) though there isn’t too much of a aftermarket for it parts do actually exist, many people and race teams manufacture parts for the GZ :)
    There’s even a drift car with a GZ that makes 700HP/709PS Naturally aspirated! Amazing and it’s Toyota so it’s very reliable compared to the other v12s that people would use for a project that aren’t so reliable or good such as the old BMW V12 which I’ve heard is not a good choice unless you love getting your fingers greasy quite often.

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I guess if I ever did it again I'd also rather use another engine. Toyota is obviously very reliable but I would consider a smaller package like V10 from BMW or V8? It was quite a task to get the lump in but I wanted this one to be as close as possible to original.

    Great work! Well done! That is an amazing amount of work. I wish there was a nice kit car for the McLaren! You and several others have built them but I don’t think anyone has done a really good kit. Nice ride in your 928 S4! I am a big time 928 guy (I have had 15 of them!). They are such great cars! Well done!

      @BroughBuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks James. Many people has asked me to make a mold for kits but I don't think I'll be thr guy to do that. Soo much admin and stuff😁. I'm glad there's more 928 fans out there. They are highly underrated

    Just seen the build and then the drive. Really outstanding work. A more accurate looking wheel will only help. I think one of the best things is the fact it isn't real.....so it can actually be driven and truly enjoyed. Having said that, this must be a future museum piece. Art it most definitely is. You are a master craftsman. Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed seeing it come together. P S. I must admit, my mind keeps wondering how cool this would look with the Harrods racing decals added! 🤪

      @BroughBuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thanks for the awesome compliments! It really means a lot to me.
      One of te biggest things I wish I could change is the wheels.
      When deciding on the colour I was very torn between the Harrods stripes. Who knows, maybe next one🤔

      @Brough Built Wheels aside, its still a standout build my friend. If you really are thinking of another, then one of my original thoughts with this was how cool a longtail version would be. But with your skills, you should look into the viability of the T50! .. .as long as you know a good turbine engineer 🤪 I hope you've been enjoying the driving of it thus far. I remember Gordon Murray saying in an interview, he sold his F1 because, due to the price of them now, you just can't drive them around any longer. That's what's so cool about yours 👌

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would certainly be an amazing build but I don't think I'm ready for a T50 yet but I agree the fun factor is amazing for the fact that I'm not driving an irreplaceable $20m car😅

    Man you probably without a doubt get this allot but that car is sick I remember lusting over this car in the 90’s playing need for speed and watching it win Le Mans in 95 by car #59 I was in love with that car along with the Porsche 911’s of that era and the Ferrari 550 Maranello the 550 is my ultimate dream car if I could have anything in the world car wise the 550 Maranello would be that car you realized a dream and that is so very cool

    This is f'ing awesome. Mucho respect for your hard work and dedication. I could not help but notice your legs and the seating position. Are you very tall? It is uncomfortable to drive the car?

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man! Yeah it was quite the undertaking to figure out the final seating position. This was limeted by the fuel cell behind and suspension in the front. I am 6.1 and the fit is snug but feels kind of like go-cart seat position. My dad for instance gets much more dtm style seating in the car.

    This build is probably one of the best I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. My only concern is the engine sound when you were driving it? I'm not familiar with F1's so it could be normal, but right before you upshift the engine makes this weird deep sound. Still, spectacular build, hope Murray notices it! Greetings from France.

      He’s clearly got a different exhaust setup from the f1, likely different materials, and a different engine. The engine in the f1 was based based on the v12 he’s got, but lots of work was done to it, including new heads. The f1 had what, 700hp? Can’t expect his to make the same sound as the f1.

    This is such a beauty and there is so much hard work its definitely worth more for you then someone who owns a real mclaren f1.

      That is a difficult question because I am such a fan of the real F1 and because it is the ultimate unicorn. But it is an immense feeling of pride and accomplishment to have been able to build my own one.

    Please explain the lock box at the store. In the US we ask for the plugs at the front counter and they're retrieved from the stockroom, then we pay for them and the other stuff we pick up and take them out the door. I'm sure it's a theft prevention, I just don't understand. thanks, jude

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are 100% correct about the anti theft thing. We've got larger spares and accessory stores (I guess something like mini Walmart) and you buy and receive car parts in the back of the store, but have to walk through the store to pay. So I recon smaller spares get "lost" between the counter and cashier😁
