Let me say this first: Thank you, sir. I'm so glad TH-cam has recommended this video to me. It's unlike other historical footage that it feels like your video has a plot or something that resembles to vlogging nowadays --- as if I was really there watching you sunbathing, walking across the street, eating with your friend, etc.
Blossoming lad. I have watched this vid for many years. I still love watching it. HK will remember you. I sometimes still walk on the routes in your video.
Thanks for sharing what HK was like almost 70 years ago. I visited HK last year and saw a lot of high rise buildings and crowded streets. Life seemed so carefree back then.
Fond memories - at that time I lived in Stanley and schooled at Quarry Bay then 9 years old. Was evacuated out of Hong Kong in 1941 and returned after the war in 1946 having already reunited in the UK with my father who was a prisoner from X'mas day 1941 until the end of the war.
This is what TH-cam was made for. Thank you for sharing this history, maybe when you filmed this you didn’t feel like you were recording anything special, just an ordinary day with your friends, but for us this is incredible.
Thank you so much for recording life in Hong Kong in the 1950s. The films are extremely precious, especially to us Hongkongers! May you rest in peace in heaven, Mr Rogge!
I'm from Hong Kong. Glad to see the documentary of old Hong Kong that you made it. I do shared it to my parents that reminds them the moment of their childhood they had. Thanks for made it and shared it. Mr Michael. Wish you all the best and good health.
Do you think that's him? The guy on the video was probably born around 1920, he'd probably would be 98, and the man on the youtube channel doesn't look that old.
This old vintage film surely must also bring back memories for you! I was 2 years old when you filmed this. The world has certainly changed allot since then. Thankyou for uploading this video.
All your videos about the old days in Hong Kong are truly priceless. Especially to those like me who was born there.. . Thank you so much for sharing them all with us.. . I was born 1956 in Hong Kong and I really enjoy watching your videos. I have watched about twenties of your videos and I know there're many more to go. Wondering if the museum in Hong Kong have some of your videos.. . God bless!
We owe Mr Rogge a huge debt of gratitude for all the wonderful films he took of old Hong Kong. Magical stuff, ensuring those eras are never forgotten..
We all forget back in the days it was not as easy as today shooting videos. We pull out our phones or small camera point & shoot as we wish. You are our hero!!!
Absolutely love these videos. Born in Hong Kong in the 60s, left for the states in the 70s. I still remember the 70s Hong Kong. I get a taste of 50's and 60's of Hong Kong when I go back to back to the photos my parents and relatives took. Thank you for all you do.
I guess he's the lucky one. Father was still alive and not get captured by Japanese. It looks like his family members were alive. He lived in Holland, that means he was about the same age with Anne Frank and lived in the same country. But Anne Frank died tragically, the whole family died, and reincarnated as Babro Karlen, and she didn't have an easy life. While he's still alive doing fun thing such as traveling the whole world & uploading video to youtube. 1950s were the time when baby boomers were created, and people start moving toward ideal lives. Building nice homes, nice offices, etc..
Well, it is already confirmed by Anne's surviving uncle, Buddy Elias, that Babro Karlen, was the real Anne Frank's reincarnation. She met him, and they became like family right away until he died. The funny thing is, when a soul receive an unthinkable tragedy (e.g. get murdered, etc.), it will be carried away to the next life. When Anne died, I believe, she went to heaven, but when she's reincarnated, she carried the trauma for a certain lesson. (She is 64 years old now.) For example, she got nightmares for no reason. Then in this lifetime Babro met the 'reincarnated' mean police that captured her family. She got trembled every time she met him. But eventually she got courage to confront him, once she learned the lesson, the nightmares disappeared, and she could life a happy life. IMO, Michael perhaps get a new life too, without having to die first. For example: - His old friend died, but he got new youtube friends (and haters too, lol). - His old life was busy capturing films, now he is busy uploading, & sharing the films. Except, it looks like he got the fun part of life. But this is just my opinion. I might be wrong. Hopefully I don't upset anybody. :)
WAFFEN COLLIDER I didn't say she was gassed. Anne was special not because she was murdered, she was special because she wrote a book and of the depth of her thinking. I feel I have the same depth as she was. Alright, probably she was more, because I wasn't maturing until I was 27-ish. This Babro Karlen more or less has similar depth. I would say she's 80% Anne Frank. As the result, not so many people can understand me, which is suck. I understand others, others don't understand me. I feel like a university student among kindergarten students.
Thank you for all the films you post. I have been enjoying them for a long time now. I currently live in HK and its great to see the city how it used to be. All the best.
Mr. Rogge - I have been following your channel, and watching those wonderful films of yours, for a few years now. I even visited an exhibition of your photographs in Sheung Wan (HK) a few years ago. All your materials are real treasures which transport us vividly to a golden and bygone era. I was just wondering if you ever thought of writing your own memoirs - not only of your time in Hong Kong, but also of your life in general. I am sure that they would be loaded with vivid and intense impressions of the places you visited and the things you felt and experienced - including your later years back in Holland, your experience as a father, etc. It would be my wish to see all those things published. I am sure that such memoirs would be comparable to, if not richer than, Martin Booth's wonderful autobiographical novel "Gweilo". Thank you. Ismael.
Thank you very much for this video! I am from Hong Kong and living in France now. This video means a lot to me even though I have never seen this time which was way before I was born!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful videos. I visited Hong Kong once and was fascinated by its history. I wish I had a time machine, but this is the next best thing.
Thank you for uploading. I haven't born at that time and lovely to see it. Hong Kong has changed a lot, in a fast speed. Likely to know the old days and how the changes
Wow! Awesome! I love these clips! Enjoy so much watching your life in Hong Kong. While I was watching, I hoped that there was a time tunnel that I could go to that time and meet you. I was working with 2 Dutch banks in Central, Hong Kong. I like Dutch people. Nice meeting you here, Mr Michael Rogge! 🤝🏻
Hey there, really thank you very much for all these fascinating footage. I have contacted the HK Museum of History about your works and they told me that they actually contacted you Mr. Rogge that they will be using your works to update the Museum which will be done by 2021/2022. By the way, I see you walking down to Central from probably the peak and I know there is a lane called the Dutch Lane there near Stubbs Road and Peak Road. Does the lane happen to be the same lane you used to walk to work from the your HK home?
What a handsome 20 years old young man you were ! May I ask you if your friends on this video are still among us today ? Quite interesting though to know there were already foreigners in Hong Kong at that time...
Cmhml Ogsmtw : Of course there were foreigners there. Hong Kong had been a British colony since 1842, apart from the Imperial Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945.
Tiber Foaming ... which is actually pretty sad and unfair... It seems like foreigners have always lived with all privileges there.. Just look at the video and how well these young dutch people lived while a lot of local hong kong people would live in a huge poverty..
At 0:29 I can see Garden Terrace! I grew up there and know the family that ultimately sold their houses to build the big buildings. Also this looks like it was shot near Macdonell Rd, where I also have fond memories... the difference being you could actually see from place to place back then! It also looks like Glenealy school is already there in the far back above everything.
Hello Michael. New subscriber here in Canada. I was born in HK. Your footages are amazing old Hong Kong. Wonderful! Thank you so much. Oh, is that Maggie sauce at the dinner table?

You certainly have amazing editing skills for a 89-year-old! (Saw in an old comment from 7 years ago saying that you were 82 :P)
Let me say this first: Thank you, sir.

Did you know the Booth family by any chance? I know Mrs. Booth passed. Was she buried in Hong Kong?
you must be very old.......
When you were evacuated, where did you go? And then when you returned, how long afterward did you stay?
Such a personal and intimate story. Thank you for sharing.
Mr Rogge
I was born in HK in 60s. I just love the old days of HK.
Thanks for sharing. You are great.

yes, though vices were commonplace yet it was a very orderly city for the commoner!
This is what TH-cam was made for. Thank you for sharing this history, maybe when you filmed this you didn’t feel like you were recording anything special, just an ordinary day with your friends, but for us this is incredible.

1950s were nostalgia for a past age, but life were seemingly leisurable and joyous.
Except for the millions that were struggling after WW2.
