I was born in Hong Kong when it was still a British Colony and I still live in Hong Kong. I recalled many memories of my childhood by watching the film. Thank you Michael.

The quality of the film is fantastic. It's amazing to have such beautiful records of the life and tragedies of Hong Kong in the 50s..
Your work is really a commendable public service and a labour of love.

Michael, thank you so much for preserving memories of such an important historical era for the former British Crown colony of Hong Kong, her former subjects and posterity. I don't think many people nowadays in Hong Kong have seen colour footage about Hong Kong in the 50s or 60s. Nor would most of them remember what Hong Kong was like even if they have lived through such period of turmoil. I was born in Hong Kong in 1963 and am still a Hongkonger. I don't have many photographs of myself or anybody else taken in the 60s, and none of them was in colour. I don't have much recollection of what I looked like as a baby or a young boy or what Hong Kong was like in the 1960s. So thanks again Michael for bringing back some of my memories in the 60s through your film clips. I dearly hope you are still alive and kicking today and would remain well and healthy for years to come.

Amazing! My parents were born in 1948, so this is way before my time. Hong Kong looked very different by the time I was born. I am trying to imagine my parents being the very young children in this video, while the young men and women could have been my grandparents (born in the 1920s). Thank you for uploading! I really wished I can dive inside my monitor and experience the society that my parents saw in their childhood. Someone invent a time travel machine!

Great editing and music choice Michael. Also the footage of the devastating fire in the Shek Kip Mei squatters camp captures a moment in history that is all but forgotten.

Parts of this film clip were shot later than 1953, Bridge on the River Kwai was released in 1957. (4.42)
The major fire in Shijipmei 石硤尾大火 was on Christmas day December 1953 (窩仔上村 was one of the 6 villages burned to the ground 11.31 ).

Nicely preserved film. The second half depicts the difficult lives of the refugees. How ironic it was that the west and Japan made lives miserable for the mainland Chinese through centuries of invasion and colonisation, then pretended to be so kind to be charitable. Such is life and so called humankind.

Then, some still travelled using rickshaws, for perhaps a mere 20 cents HK. And school fee in a government run school was about $5 HKD ..... and the police force was very very corrupt. Oh well, how things have changed today especially for the HK police force.
