  • An unreleased studio version of "The Bird" by The Time. The released version is from a live show that The Time did on October 4th, 1983 and that version can be found on The Time's 1984 album "Ice Cream Castle".
More information about this recording from Jesse Johnson:
Prince called for me to come out to his pad late one Wednesday night in the cold of the winter around 11:30pm. He stated that the song I had given him, he reworked and Morris would be there as well. So I drive there in the middle of the night (cause I ain't stupid and I'm trying to get on) after arriving at P's crib, only then do I find out the song is already recorded. I had nothing to say, because the track I gave him was a joke compared to what he came up with. He absolutely killed the track, and all I could say was "Damn Dude"!
Now here's where the shit gets funny. Prince's Ampex 1100 24 track machine starts tripping and will not rewind, so ask me to rewind the machine by hand and Morris is laughing his ass off, and course I'm like "Man fuck that, you be better call Don Batts (his tech) to fix that shit!" Prince is now cracking up. We have to finish the song, so I go "WTF" and start rewinding the machine by hand. P could see what I was doing so I had a drum stick on the reel where the holes are rewinding the machine, by the time Prince sees what I'm doing, he yells "what f**k are you doing Jesse?" Rewinding this raggedy ass machine, I said, as he jumps up to come look at the tape to see if I damaged it in anyway he sort of trips over Morris who has this long ass q-tip type things that are made for sticking in a solution and cleaning your tape heads, so before he could reach me he's yelling Morris to stop using his tape head cleaners to clean his ears! Now I'm on floor, because Morris would always do that and Prince had told him a thousand times before not to! Needless to say we got the track finished and the rest is history.
The three of us together were always cracking the hell up, but it was really Morris who was absolutely funny as hell and he and Prince would have me crying with the interaction between the two of them. They were absolutely great together and did some seriously great music together. For me as the "Original Outsider", I always felt fortunate to have been invited to be a part of the greatness.
    Please enjoy the track.
    LovePeace,
    Jesse

These cats had their ups and down but all in all it seems from the stories being told by Morris and Jessie that they had fun together when they were working on music.
It almost seems as if they really didn't view Prince in the way fans of his music did. They just viewed him as Prince the guy they'd known before he became huge and that never changed despite the success Prince had.
The one thing I get from all of these guys is they knew Prince were their way into the music business because Morros tells the story that at one time when he was with Prince's band Grand Central, that his mom was their manager and she had been trying to land them a record deal to no avail then Prince gets a deal with Warner Bros and the rest if history.

      @bmentlow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@2010Gullwing Sorry, my info was a bit off, bad memory. Jesse started the idea of it. I found his post about it...
"Prince Played Guitar (Actually played everything) On Get It Up!
I played guitar, bass, & keys on: "Bite The Beat" Vanity 6 (I wrote music on 4 track & Prince wrote lyrics. It was my first publish work. Played it on a purple metal flaked Morite guitar just like Sugarfoot & the original guitar player with the B52s. That guy was amazing)
      I played guitar on "Gigolos"
I played guitar on "Live Version The Bird" Prince played everything on the studio version "The Bird" and it's sick!
(I wrote a 4 track version on 1999 tour, Prince kinda like the hook, he threw the rest of what I did in the trash can as he commenced to write and performed a straight heater)
Morris & I recorded a song name "Old & Ingnorant" in Mpls the next day M & I fly out to meet P. In LA, at Sunset Sound he dug it and the track was rerecorded, rewritten, and became "Ice Cream Castles"! And John McClain "I did perform all the guitars on Ice Cream Castles"✌️👏👏👏
(Prince kept telling me "It's so cool how you played the bass on the AND instead of the 1" great compliment even though at that time I didn't know what he was talking about...yeah of course I do now!)
"The Kid" is a strange and funny story. We were at Sunset Sound are engineer was always Peggy McCleary (Later married became Peggy Leonard) and she was absolutely an amazing engineer. She and later Susan Rogers (P's engineer), were to of the best engineers I had the pleasure of working with. They both endowed me a great deal of knowledge that I'm still utilizing today, thanks ladies👄👄👄
Back to the story: Morris who is a very, very gifted drummer went in sat down to play "Kid", but he kept speeding up Prince tried it, he kept speeding up too! So we got this brilliant idea, when looking back at it now it's funny the P and I thought this was a really good resolution. Morris out of the three of us was the only one that had a drink now and again, or let me put it clearer, Morris was the only one that knew how to drink. P & I were real amateurs, honestly...real pu$$ys when it came to drinking. I still am just ask Terry or Jerome one drink and my a$$ is through. To this day I still don't drink. Any, Prince & I drank a glass of wine or my case a glass of WHINE! (ohh my head the room is spinning, I don't feel well, etc, etc) will I'm playing the DRUMS on "The Kid" and of course all guitars.
Jungle Love- Saved my food $ the 1999 Tour came home bought a Tascam reel to reel 8 track recorder and came up with music for JUNGLE! Prince every word+melody and kilted it😆
I was very honored to write with the Cat. He didn't eff around. You had to bring it, you had to earn it if you wanted get put on. P. Would call at all hours, he clubbed a lot and we would record after the clubs close regardless of what coast we were on. (I could never stay up with Prince & Morris. They were so seasoned & I was a complete newbie nerd light-weight)
I played guitar solo on "My Drawers" P played rhythm guitar + everything else! except drums, that's Mr. Day.
      Morris Day on Drums:
      "Cool" "The Stick" "Oh Baby"
"The Walk" "Wild & Loose" "Girl" "Gigolos" "Bacon Skin" "Tricky" I
      (I can't remember anymore it getting late...off t00oooo...zzzzz)
I hope this sheds light on some questions you may have had. It's the truth. Unlike a lot people writing books, I was there."
      LovePeace,

I think the decision was sound - this version sound almost like a 1999 rip off...where as showing the, doing it 'live' and using the movie version was better - you didn't question them that way like with this one. This could have been on the album but the single and video, etc should have been te live version like in PR. Smart choice.
