It's absolutely not a benefit to have small talk around the water cooler (literal or metaphorical). What is a benefit is the ability to work in peace and quiet at home! I don't need or want to know who else works in the company. I'm there to work, not socialize!

So, I read the article then clicked on the "Sweatbox Paradox" link to see what it was about:
The "clinical psychologist" simply continues to offer anecdote and has zero empirical evidence. It seems based on nothing more than anecdote and deep personal biased. It's completely unscientific.
Also worth noting that after a quick google, said psychologist seems to do some corporate work as well. It's possible the whole "working from home thing" is eating in to her bottom line.
And finally, the "Sweatbox Paradox" article also took the chance to plug the good doctors book🙄
Conclusion: Click-bait drivel informed by deep biases, and espousal of vainglorious and outdated ideals as the salient way to maintain intimacy in a relationship, and used as an opportunity to shill the "experts" book

Honestly, more than anything the writer unveiled how corporate culture isn't primarily concerned with economic growth but rather with conducting a sociological experiment where executives & managers can throw you into truly uncomfortable scenarios to see how you'll react & superficially reward the most obedient according to the predatory workplace standards that they pledge allegiance to -- hurts his own argument

    • @benbaert2166
      @benbaert2166 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Yep, it's about being able to boss someone around, which indeed is harder remotely than in an office. If productivity truly was the criterion than most middle managers would be out of a job anyways -- and they know that.
This is indeed about the "sociological benefits". To those who enjoy bossing their employees around, that is.

It’s slave labor. We are slaves with out visible chains. We are there to make them wealthy and given enough just to survive and feel like we are free. Cogs in a machine. Just look at movies like office space or the matrix. Those films are great analogies for the corporate world we all
Seem To believe is normal and how life is meant to be lived. It isn’t.
Working from home is seen as a threat to that control they have over us. It’s a breath of fresh air and a sign of liberation to work from home which also means they can’t control you. Hence the gaslighting and propganda. It’s a threat to their wealth and direct control. They’re parasites, physically and energetically, from middle management all the way up to the CEO.

The pros of remote working are so great that there aren't any valid arguments against it for jobs which just need a computer, internet connection and human intelligence. These arguments to return to office are mostly manipulations and disguised lies. A few remote working benefits that come to mind:
    1. No commuting time, drastic fuel savings, reduced carbon emissions, less traffic and accidents
    2. Greater ability to concentrate on complex and professional work
    3. Quieter offices for those who choose to go there
    4. Corporate office expenses saved (rent, electricity etc.)
    5. Flexibility and allowing people to work in their most productive part of the day
    6. More family and personal time
    etc. etc.
Remote working is perhaps the fastest way to reduce CO2 emissions.

I'm glad you have highlighted this issue. For women, the workplace is just another place where we are sexually harassed. In fact, most workplaces are abusive in this way. Women are constantly overhearing men talk about the cute girl coming for the interview, whether or not they can bang the new girl, and we constantly get underhand comments about what we are wearing, look like, whether we are married or not etc. etc. etc. I am not surprised some men feel this way. With the pandemic and working from home, men have less access to women. I have always said that the workplace is abusive to women in ALL ways. Working remotely means men cannot comment on us in this way at all, or it will be recorded / with paper trail. Your boss can't say over email, Sarah can you wear that cute baby girl dress again? Did you know it was see through. We don't get called in to fake meetings just so male supervisors and managers can stare at us. And we don't get watched and compared for promotion based on our appearance only.

Child Care: My cable box was acting funny. When I called the cable company, I could vaguely hear happy kiddie noises in the background of the lady help desk employee who answered. 👍 She talked me through factory reset of the cable box just fine.
In contrast, there is a day care centre at the end of my street. It's been mostly closed due to the restrictions we still have in place here. But when it was open, guarantee that with every new crop of kiddies, the first day will be filled with a few screaming crying toddlers wanting their mummies who had little choice but to abandon their offspring with strangers so they could earn money to help with increasing costs of living.
If I must hear kiddies yelling and screaming, I'd prefer that it be fighting with their siblings at home over toys than otherwise.

Another thing: this paying what the person would make in that market---the work then has to filter back to the headquarters via the computer broadband, where it gets disseminated and sent out--FROM WHERE THE COMPANY IS LOCATED. I have to send all my work to the office--I don't disseminate my work into the immediate community in which I live. Therefore, the rate they would pay on the contract they and I signed is still valid no matter where I choose to live.
Going outside on my porch to fiddle around with my plants gives me a break from my daily routine. I wasn't hired to socialize--that wasn't in the job description. There were specific things in the job description/contract I signed and none of it said anything about "maintaining office culture" or "socializing with my co-workers". They aren't my friends. They're just someone I have to tolerate on a daily basis.
I'm at a point in my career where I dont' give a fuck about advancing... I'm moments away from retiring. I've done all that already. Did it in the largest markets in the country. I did what I was hired to do, so promote whomever you want. I don't want the headache of having to deal with corporate stupidity.

Nobody talking about the Real reason corps are forcing "back to the office". Real estate. Rich managers and executives who own houses near the office don't want their homes to depreciate in value - if the peons could work from anywhere and moved away.
This is the reason every company that put out surveys had a majority if not 95% of employees say they would prefer full time remote work. Yet the higher ups who make the decisions have a house that's the shortest commute from office buildings. Those 5% are making the decision to screw the rest of everyone else not because offices create a 'collaborative' environment. It's selfish evil greed. Force all other workers to risk a car accident every day, pollute the environment, clog traffic, and pay unaffordable rents because they're financially secure but can never have enough.
Do those surveys again, but link responses with their address and if they own or rent a house. You'll see who the minority is that is making the call to "bring employees back" and why!

It's called a red herring fallacy. When you say "I'm right" but you respond to an argument that nobody is making.
And that's exactly what he's doing. He says "employees view the office as a war zone, and that's the problem, therefore we need to go back to the office."
But no employee thinks of the office as a war zone. That's something the author is making up so he can assert his point.

I have a problem separating my work life from my home life when working remotely. Hard to just say "It's 5pm, I'm done with work" when I don't have the excuse that I need to catch a train or drive home.
But, that's just something I haven't learned. That's discipline we need to develop,

"Water cooler talks" do not have to be in person at all. At my work, everybody working from home just plans this very specific "water cooler" moment at lunch time and they can just casually chat with each other during break through webcam. And it's not mandatory at all since we're the ones who came up with this, not management. If you're too busy or not in the mood, nobody will get angry at you. It's a completely optional social daily event.

Daily meetings are trash. Especially because other colleagues critisize you if you cannot attend (I am a student and sometimes I cannot attend the daily meetings). Also, you waste a lot of time. It'a stupid because the manager asks you what you did in the previous day, even if you logged the time and you filled there what you did. It is completely stupid. Ask them via chat and that's it.

I laughed my ass off so hard about some of the statements in that utterly RIDICULOUS MEDIUM POST!!! At my last job, we actually started the project and did all the training from home with tools like zoom email and chat, and we still got to know each other really well. As soon as we got back to the office, someone had Covid19 and several of us, including me caught the virus, and we all had to be back home again! So much to say the office is safer... WRONG! Oh and also, that was a very "productive" month with half the team off sick, wasn't it?🤦‍♀️😂

i'm thankful my employer only wants us in the office 1 day a week for our teams to communicate project stuff..the owners were able to downgrade the office space to save on rent. we're also noticing that the office-day is FAR LESS productive. my entire job is through my laptop and resources are cloud based...talking with my coworkers about the weather or sports etc is nice, but I can also talk to my friends about that..

Honestly all this MBA garbage really just makes me think that they are scared. Scared their bosses will realize stuff gets done without the MBA looking over the shoulder.
Once that happens then their job becomes obsolete and they lose theirs.

Couldn't imagine working in an office, or even in a building ... or even working at all. I quit my job in 1980 (inspired by The Members punk song 'Goodbye To The Job') and I've never looked back. I've always valued freedom over money, and realised pretty early on, that you can either go to work every day, or you can be free to spend your day as you wish. I chose the latter. I've been out of work for 40 years, but have been married twice, owned two beautiful homes and have two grown children and two grandchildren. I've never felt poor or underpriviliged. Optimism and creative visualisation gets me by. Whatever I need manifests when I need it. Work is okay, but why work when you can magic eveything up ?

I am ok with companies trying to convince me to go back to the office with perks and food and such, they have the right to try and I can appreciate that. Giving raises vs $50 in pizza isn't always the simple solution, although we definitely love it. I think the disconnect is not giving us the choice and respecting it either way, or at least being flexible and letting us work from home if we need to for whatever reason.
If I were a business owner who actually owned an office I would want people to use it too (less sympathy for the renters, that's easier to drop). The second disconnect is not being honest about this reason, trying to trick smart people doesn't work well.

I abhor 'open office' environments with lines of tables joined up together, i hate offices period but at least with cubicles you get some sort of privacy. Having said that, it seems apparent that office environments do not bring out the best in productivity for everyone. Too many distractions and clash of personalities and toxicity can drain ones productivity imo.
I've yet to hear of one sensible, rational and intelligent reasoning that supports working in offices with hundreds of others vs working remote.
