Dear Jo, I am doing CELTA right now and i have been watching your videos. They sum up books! I enjoy them very much. I have a question. How well, do you think, can proficient nonnative English teachers teach ESL, especially in regards to pronunciation? I hope you dedicate a video or two addressing their most common gaps and concerns. Thank you for everything.
noha sharaky thanks for the nice feedback- I'm glad the videos are helpful. The kind of video you suggest would be difficult because of the different accents all native and non-native speaker teachers have. Listen to Silvana Richardson's IATEFL plenary if you are feeling under confident as a NNS. You should be proud that you are such a good role model!!
noha sharaky ...Noha, non-native speakers are just as good if not better than native speakers simply because of their knowledge of EFL. Don't worry about your accent. Everyone has one!
Hi jo My lesson is about present simple , so I'm gonna follow TTT method first I'll write a sentence for example I get up at 7 a.m then I'm gonna ask Is this past or present ? Is it positive or negative ? But I don't know how I'm gonna explain auxiliary My Ss are elementary level
The magic solution is to understand that imposed Latin-based approach IS magick, and has cast a spell on the education system worldwide (where English teaching is concerned). The good news is that we can introduce other exponents that are conducive and linguistically accurate, such as 'backshifting', 'simplification' (including situational ellipsis), modality and futurity, and accurate parsing (debunking myths like "phrasal verbs" etc.) - "making the journey right to the end" involves bringing down the walls of fiction. We cannot hold any teachers accountable but we can encourage all teachers to avoid parroting (what's in current course book teacher's manuals) and to delve deeper TOGETHER . (v.3.0) stay tuned. Let's open the discussion on how to proceed with less biased approaches (esp. to "grammar").
As usual, short but full of precious stones. Keep it up.
