- In this video show how I made raised beds as part of our efforts to tidy up our front yard. I'm using the Japanese traditional method of yakisugi (burnt cedar) to improve the longevity of the raised beds.
Videos I watched on making yakisugi raised beds:

@@davidanalyst671 Just exactly what is your beef?
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one!
Wow, thank you!
Those raised beds look fantastic! I love the contrast of the stained and burnt cedar timber! It's great that your entire family is interested in gardening!
It's always good day when u upload
🙏😁
I love the pace of your uploads. They are always a welcome surprise. Also in a TH-cam landscape of loud people and weekly uploads. This sort of video is very calming.
I find many TH-camrs of niche things. Can only sustain weekly content for a while before it becomes repetitive or trend-seeking.
You mentioned you wanted to do more interview and tour content of other Abandoned houses in Japan. Your welcome to do that, but these kinds of odd jobs around the house are my fave. The addition of the burning wood made it extra interesting.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback. These kinds of videos will always be my core content. I do want to do the occasional visit, though I haven't done one in quite a while! 😁
Keep up the great work, I love sitting back and watching your videos whenever they come up
Awesome! Thank you.
The one thing i hate and also like about firewood is that the work is never done! Keeps you busy and also makes you warm its very satisfying. Nice job on the beds man.
Thanks mate, yeah, it’s keeping me fit!
Heating with wood is the best. Each log should keep you warm 3 times. Once when you cut it down. Once when you split it, and once when you burn it.
@@Akuma122887 very true! 😄
i like the contrast between the lighter brown tops and the charred boxes
Starting watching while living in America, and have now moved to Tokyo! Best wishes for you and your loved ones!
Thanks - hope you’re enjoying life in Japan!
Great to see the progress!Considering what you started out with, you should be really proud how things are coming along! Lot’s of hard work. お疲れ様でした!
Thanks a lot Jordan!
The way I click when I see one of your videos 😂. Been following since the start of your journey!
Love to hear it! Thanks.
I've been on TH-cam since its inception. I've subscribed to probably a couple of hundred channels over the years and watched 50 000+ clips (give or take). That said, your channel is one of the best our there. I'm always looking forward to you releasing new content. Always pure quality and wholesomeness. Anyways, keep up the good work. You deserve a 1 M subscribers. /BR
Thanks so much - I appreciate the kind words!
The beds look great.
I have built similar things to these in this way, but found they tend to come apart at the corners over time.
To resolve that I now use a lap joint at the corners, drill a hole down through all the posts at the joint, and drive a coated 3/8's rebar through them all and into the ground.
Keeps them from shifting and the corners tight. 🙂
Thanks for that. I hadn't thought about the shifting possibility. Might need to do as you've suggested for future ones.
Enjoy your videos, love your plaid and checkered shirts.
I saw a short for you on tv in oz the other day but forgot to watch it. I will have to go back and find it.
Thanks, it was probably the SBS Dateline episode?
We watched it on the app. It was nice to see you there but they didn’t do all of your hard work enough justice in my opinion!
Beautiful solution for unused materials! Hope you & family enjoy great & bountiful fruit of your labor... 👍👍
Nihon Daisuke desu. Thank you for showing Japanese what can be done to save these grand, irreplaceable houses and make them liveable homes again.... I am glad to find you on TH-cam!!
The trim color looks amazing against the blackened wood!!! Those raised beds sure do wonders with the front yard too. It's good that you're not letting all of that dead wood go to waste at all. Keep it up, you're doing a great job!!!
The black burned wood with the osmo tops made it a beautiful sight. Home grown food is delicious. Hugelkulture is an excellent way to take care of that rain that can flood the place easily while making healthy soil, never expected it to be used by an Aussie living in Japan though 😉
Thanks! We’ll certainly get plenty of rain over wet season and summer!
that was a big snake! it looks beautiful as you clean it up, can't wait to see more!
I love seeing Japan and hearing my accent.
It's comforting to feel like it could be a reality for me too.
Go for it man!
its crazy to think that i started following you 5 years ago and all the work you've done to your house! it really is amazing to see. thank you for continuing to bring us along for the ride
Watching you do all this work makes me thankful I rent a manshon!
These turned out great. I love the addition of the Osmoed wood on top. I look forward to seeing what grows there in future videos.
I hope these videos will never end, I enjoy them so much, thank you
Love the wooden lasagna! Always a pleasant surprise to see a new video pop up 😌
🙏
The stag beetle larvae were fascinating.
As a North American I giggled to myself when I saw the blue berry bush and wondered if you are trying to attract bears. 😂 I don't think that there are many, if any in that part of Ibaraki.
The OSMO looked really great on the light colored wood.
That’s right, no bears around here!
Springtime in Ibaragi - a great time for outdoor projects like gardening. Always happy to see a vid from this channel. I am reminded of my time in Ibaragi some decades ago.
That pile of dead branches looks like a summertime brown snake heaven.
While there are venomous snakes here, most are not, but I am always mindful of them, coming from Australia!
Love seeing a new video from you pop up! Really enjoy your content and seeing the creative approaches you take to improving your space.
The German came out of nowhere, especially the one on the wood stain can 😆
It is interesting to learn which words are the same in different languages
The contrast with the top boards and the posts is very attractive. Thanks for sharing. Charles
No worries, Charles, thanks for watching!
Ive been folowing you now for quiet some time. Really amazing how beautiful and inviting your house turned out. This shiuld really be a inspiration for everyone. All the hadd work you put in and its amazing how you learn yourself to do all that. More and more this becomes my dream too. Hats of to you mate.
It looks so good with the torched wood adding that beautiful contrast to the color of the beds. I always learn so much watching your videos ❤
What a lot of work! I know because we just increased our raised garden beds by one this year to grow only herbs. We put it close to the kitchen so I can just step outside a few paces to include fresh herbs while cooking. Thanks for posting.
Good idea! Might make something else a bit closer for the herbs!
Wow, those are the fanciest raised beds I've ever seen!
Your posts are always great, even if it is something as simple as cleaning up the yard it's always nice to receive updates!
Always good to get an update. Looks really good. Thank you!
No worries, thanks!
Have you considered putting your favorite mushroom spawn in the log/wood chip beds?
If you end up with a bed in a shadier/wetter spot, or even mulch an area under a tree, you can encourage edible mushroom beds while they break down the wood and have a fun foraging project.
The larvae look a lot like Christmas Beetle ones in Aus. People keep getting rid of curl grubs from lawns then wondering why there aren’t any Christmas Beetles in their area anymore. 😢 🪲 Good to hear you relocated them 💜🐨💜
Let's funkin goooooo
New video
So well done and stylish, like all your projects. Your kids are gonna love the Blueberries!
So happy for you and your family that all thats left to do is make the front yard pretty
Absolutely love every single upload! Living in Tokyo, it's inspiring me to move to the countryside for this life, until I remember that I'm not even a quarter as handy as you! 😅 Keep up the great work, man!
living the dream life my friend ,wish i had the courage to do it when i was younger , would have made a huge difference to my life
Great result with the raised garden beds - and the yard looks so much better for it !
12:42 That pronunciation was really good! Well done!
Good to see you again friend. Very nice raised garden beds. I have heard of the Japanese method of burning the wood to prevent insects. I didn’t know it made the timber water proof also. ❤
I never heard about Hügelkultur, but I love your pronounciation. And what a great idea to plant Blueberrys❤ I hope many wonderful plants will grow, I am looking forward to see a harvest video
Excellent video and just the ticket as summer gardening approaches. I almost fell off my chair when you picked up the red container though!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m literally planning on doing the same thing. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m always very happy when I see your videos in my inbox :)
Nice work, please post more:) watching from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Still the best show on TH-cam, IMO. Greetings from Houston, Texas.
Wow, thanks! Greetings from Ibaraki, Japan.
Another fabulous project completed!
Nice to see your progress as always
I watch your videos while commuting to Tokyo. Really enjoyed it, looking forward to the home being perfected.
Those raised beds are beautiful. Great job!!
all of this is reminding me that its time to get out in the yard and start cleaning and planting.
I’m happy to watch a new one from you!
From Edmonton, Canada. Love watching your series of videos. The main journey is mostly over now but thank you for posting these follow ups.
No worries, I’ll get back into the main house renovations soon.
I made my raised beds waist-high. I have lots of back problems. They’ve been wonderful.
its a must click whenever i see you post
Awesome, thanks!
Fantastic planters! Making very good use of the space.
I love the Yakisugi raised garden beds💜As always, thank you for sharing!
No worries, thanks for watching!
Its nice to see your work done, i watch your videos since the beggining, glad to see your recent work done and the beatiful house you made.
Looks lovely from 3 weeks ago posted again 2024
God bless always guys
Yay back again! Always a good day for another video from Llama-san!
It's a bit late for it but I suppose you could fill any gaps in the wood with wax, maybe? That seems fairly safe for the environment while also helping keep out water. The wood will certainly get hot (particularly being black) but wax has to get pretty hot to get actually melty and if you faced those sides towards the dirt the thermal mass of the dirt should keep it a lot cooler.
They look great though so I don't even know if it's needed. xD
I thought about filling the gaps, but couldn't think of anything natural, though wax would have been a great idea. But also might be fine with the heat to keep mould and insects down. We'll see.
Looks great, even better when its all finished. Looking forward to the next video.
I am cntinually impressed how you recycle/upcycle materials into improvements on the house and property!
I love the contrast of the charred wood with the stained ones on top, very nice!
Love the 2 tone look. Very nice
Always enjoy your videos, since the beginning! Cheers, from this Canuck in Singapore. 😁
The raised beds are so beautiful! Hope you have a good growing season. Great to see another video.
Thank you!
Hello Jaya. It is good to see you in action again. I have never seen garden beds with tree off cuts in them before but it makes sense since the rotting vegetation is food for any plants placed in them. The stained top platforms look great. Was that a snake near the slaters? Looking forward to your next video.
THANKS FOR THE INTRO TO HUGEL
Not the first time seeing a German paint here. And this time also some Hügel 😅 nice. Greetings from Berlin, Germany. Love your steady improvements and every new video!
Thanks! Yes, German paints are popular here.
Like all your projects, beautiful and well done.
Great what you are doing, keep up the excellent work.
Your update is a welcoming surprise. The gardens will add so much to your family in enjoyments as well as to food.
You cant imagine how i and my wife waiting for your videos 😄🙂 so, dont stop
I'm going to keep them coming!
Great to see you back in action again.
You always have all the right equipment for every job!
Those stag beetles do such a good job of composting.
I have some in my compost too.
Just one thing, in the gardening world, peat moss is a big no-no.
I'm sure there are other ways to make the soil acidic.
Pine needles are very acidic if you can find that somewhere.
Thanks. I didn't know about peat moss, they were just selling it with the blueberries at the garden centre. I do have pine trees on our property. I do always find a reason to buy new equipment!
Saw you on Dateline 🙂great job, well done.
🙂🐿🌈❤️

Awesome! Thank you!
I love all of your videos, but your landscaping videos are my absolute favorite! The way you've transformed the grounds is absolutely spectacular. Looking forward to what you do with them next!
Great, I've got a few more garden videos planned this year!
Finally! (sorry couldn't help myself) Thanks for the upload. It's good to see some work on a part of the property that hasn't featured much in your vids before.
Also, I like the flame thrower, you have a lot of toys now. It makes me want to watch the end of "Once Upon a time in Hollywood" again. 😁👍
Thats really awesome! Its just given me an idea for my small backyard, so cheers for this!
Me: Ohhh, he has a wood chipper!
Steve Buscemi: I'm out.
That front yard definitely looks WAYYY BETTER with those raised beds!!! Gotta get all that wood debris out of there!! Maybe some short growing shrubs to define the space??
Yes, good idea, need to do something.
Glad things are going well! I feel like getting cedar in the states is one of the more expensive options, so I may be stuck with treated wood again, and char-preserving that seems like A Bad Plan (tm). lol
We'll see when/if I get to that project this year, though. :)
Enjoy!
I check every day to see if you post! so excited you're back!
Thank you for posting again.
BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for sharing it ✌️
Great video, thanks!
Looks wonderful.
Your place is looking great! You've done a stirling job on the vege beds.
Thank you!
The burnt wood looks nice when it gets that tessellated finish. Nice work.
This was epic thanks for sharing
One of your best videos on such a simple thing!
So glad to see a new video from you! Already shared with my heartbrother who wants to move to Japan. Now off to tell the rest of the world!
Always good when you upload a video, take care!
I just visited Ibaraki this year for plum blossoms! It was beautiful. I love knowing something about where you live now!
Did you visit Tsukuba-san? The plum blossoms are beautiful there.
We saw city crews clearing brush with a very large version of your trimmer and had to look twice because we had never seen a 'weed whacker' edge trimmer with a blade like that before. Most residential ones in the US have a thick cord that cuts through the grass, but never a blade. I now feel that my home trimmer is pathetic and I need an upgrade!
