Cleaning The ENTIRE Fuel System (Including Tank!) On A Motorcycle - Honda VTX1800

  • After sitting for 10+ years our fuel injected Honda VTX1800 needs virtually everything that touches fuel cleaned. Be sure to go and watch the previous videos to see how terrible all these parts looked!
    Watch as we clean the entire fuel system; tank, fuel pump, injectors, and lines.
    Tank: we use muriatic acid to strip the varnish buildup. after soaking for 24hrs and a couple rinses it looks almost perfect.
    Fuel Pump: with a new fuel pump and after dipping the assembly halves in the acid, it looks like new again.
    Injectors: they were perfect! Looks like the whole high-pressure side of the system stayed clean.
    Lines: we let muriatic acid sit in the lines for a few hours, rinsed with gasoline, then with carb cleaner.

    If I were to do it all again I would most likely seal the tank after rinsing the acid out. After a couple of months some light surface rust built up on some exposed surfaces inside the tank that needed cleaned again.

      great video. I had the same situation, used vinegar in the tank. Turned out factory clean. Let the vinegar work for four days then pressure washed the inside followed immediately by rinsing with gasoline. Take a probe to look inside the tank. Vinegar is easy to dispose of.

    Great video. The only problem I'm having is finding all the gaskets to replace on the fuel pump unit. Man, if you could point me in the right direction, that'd be awesome

    I subscribed, I bought a 1owner 2002VTX1800R from my neighbor 2months ago and these videos really help acquaint me with the bike. I've heard other channels call it desmogging, removal of the pollution control crap. Here in Indiana we don't have vehicle inspections, no test to fail. P.S. the music is a good match for the video.

    I feel your pain! I recently bought an '02 Honda Sabre 1100 with 1,600 miles on her. The guy I bought it from claimed to have cleaned out the fuel system, but it just didn't run right. My mechanic doesn't mess around, so I had him replace all the fuel lines, fuel pump, filters and just for peace of mind seal and reline the gas tank. I now have a brand new 19 year old bike!

    To anyone wanting to do this, use extreme caution. Muriatic acid is the same as hydrochloric acid. Not only is it really good at removing rust but it will eat the metal with time. You may decelop pin holes afterwards due to it eating the rust all the way through.
    I would also not cap the tank completely. As muriatic acid works it gives off gas, which in a sealed vessel will blow off whatever you are using to cap off the vent and fuel outlet, leaving acid all over the place. Use baking soda and water to neutralize the acid if you use muriatic or for any spills. Wear you PPE AND Use in well ventilated area.
    Better off using something like phosphoric acid and some steel nuts strung loosely on a piece of wire yo keep them together and shake it around gently.

      Makes sense that if it's an extremely rusted tank, more than just surface rust on the inside, it would eat right through. In that case the tank isn't salvageable anyway.
      I have tried phosphoric acid in the past and it's just not aggressive enough for my liking.

    Thaanks man, this vid really did help me. I got the same problem, a cbr125r 2002, that havent been touched for the last 10 years. It got alot of rust inside the gas tank, and the whole system is probably also full of dirt and corrosion. So tmrw ill full the gas tank with muriatic acid and a water mix, and neutralize it with some wd40 oil. Then go over all those other parts!

    Nice job brother. I'm about to do tank and pump; I'm thinking I need to de smog as well, but I'm also thinking of just running seafoam for a tank or two instead of pulling injectors. Thinking about it.

      Honestly, even with the rest of the fuel system as junked up as it was, the injectors probably didn't need cleaned. They sprayed fine right away.

    Great video with good easy explanations. I have a 2003 VTX 1800C that I last rode was about 5 years ago that now won’t start. It turns but it won’t start or even give a hint of starting. The fuel tank looks awful in the inside and no telling what the fuel pump looks like. Sure would like to be able to do all you have done with that VTX. How much do you estimate it would cost to have someone do all that work on my bike? I’m the sole owner of the bike.

    2002 honda 1800 vtx r, fuel pump in the tank. It also has been sitting outside for years. INSIDE RUST also, so how do I get the ALL the parts for the fuel pump. I am going to try the Acid. Thanks for the video. Do you suggest tank sealer?

      Thanks! I can understand your hesitation. I usually do it on every motorcycle when possible, just for the sake of simplification. One less vacuum line to eventually leak...

      That's fine.... humans contribulte less than 1% to ozone emissions... and this bike make no measurable difference. have a good one

    Do you have more detail on taking the pump apart and what to expect? Along with what you had to do with replacing seals/etc.

      Sorry but not really, no real specialty tools are needed and it's not overly complex, just take lots of pictures as you disassemble.

    Any information on vtx1300 crankcase ventilation on rear cylinder head cover wanting to tap solid aluminum post to be a ventilation port tying into the front valve cover

      Unsure, as I don't have the bike anymore. To buy new, you have to buy the entire fuel pump assembly which is $640. Normally I only buy OEM, but in this instance I just couldn't justify the cost difference.

    So I am literally doing this same exact job on my friends '02 VTX 1800. And the fuel pump is not priming at all. Could you tell me what pump you replaced it with. as I do not want to buy a whole new assembly. I really appreciate this series, I am more used to working on Suzuki's (I own 2) and am helping a friend get his VTX back up and running.

      all of the aftermarket pumps require a bit of alterations to the stock plastic that houses the pump itself, (you'll see what I mean when it's apart) but I figure that I'll only use aftermarket pumps from now on anyway so I'm not worried about it.

      probably, but even on mine it wasn't a direct bolt on. It took some minor modifications to the plastic housing to get the filter 'sock' to fit. Here's the one I used:

    what parts did you replace for the fuel pump? I see you have a different fuel filter for it.

      The pump itself and the "sock" filter is starti replaced. The aftermarket pumps don't come with the exact size filter so I just used the closest one that came in the kit.

    ‘03 Honda VTX 1800R what will cause it to flood ? It will start and run for just a minute or so and then load up with fuel and die ?

      Being fuel injected, it can't really "flood" like a traditional carburator. How do you know it's getting too much fuel? Feel free to email me at contacttwocargarage@gmail.com

      over 50/50. it's really strong so you don't need to be precise.

      A power probe, they're a bit pricey but essential for doing any electrical work on cars or motorcycles

    You didn't replace the fuel lines? lines that old are most likely cracked and rotted. Not good.

      Nahhh don't worry, because it's fuel injected they aren't your standard rubber, but high pressure lines. 2005 isn't old at all and because it wasn't left outside none of the rubber is dried or cracked. I also cleaned out the insides of all the lines until they were perfect by running several steps of cleaner and compressed air through.
