@@FlyingwithBigErn Good point.. now that Alaska has essentially bought ("merged") Hawaiian, I wonder how long their 717 fleet will continue to exist! I fly both interisland a good bit for work (live on Kauai, travel to Maui, Hilo and Kona every month or so), and have to admit I like the 737 better than the 717.. I'm ALSO a big fan of the current boarding process as a lot of my trips are somewhat last minute, so by the time I book with Hawaiian all the good seats are gone. I'm not looking forward to assigned seats, just my .02. :). I'll look for you next time I fly, Ern!
Congratulations on your channel. I am a retired MX channel surfing on a rainy morning in the Philippines. I worked on your plane before and the positive attitude shown in your videos is exactly how I remember you on the occasion/ occasions that we met. Take care.
From a former Hawaii based Submariner, been un and out of there a couple of times, but usually Guam (10x). My son, a SWA FO Vegas-based and ETOPs trained does the Hawaii trips most weeks. As I write this he just got to HNL. He has sent me a couple of submarine pictures from the same experiences you described. Used to go to the Hickam Beach right off the runways before the offshore runway was built. Always enjoy your videos, give me a feeling of my son’s experiences. ( I am not an aviator, as I went the other direction 😅)
I know how you feel about missing out on Portuguese sausage. One of my favorite things about going to Hawaii is going to Zippy’s and getting the Korean Fried Chicken with a side of Portuguese Sausage.
Nice video! Thanks for highlighting the trip without all the radio calls… it’s like the Big Ern videos format is back - that so many of us had enjoyed in the first few years of your channel.
Hawaiian Airlines inter-island B717 pilots consider it the best gig in aviation. They have two schedules, either AM or PM. They sleep on their own beds most of the time, and they don’t have to be away from home for 3-4 day periods of flying the schedule. They do between 5-6 legs per flying day and fly around 17 days per month with 13 days guaranteed off. Also, they have a minimum of 75 hours of pay per month, so they love it. It used to be the same for Aloha Airlines pilots before their demise in 2006.
I’m one of them. Next month most of my days are 3 landing days. If you go to Hawaii, support the local airline, Hawaiian Airlines. You won’t be disappointed. There’s a reason we are number one in customer service in the country and number one in on time.
@@729MendicantTide Sorry I just saw this. No that type of inter island schedule isn’t too hard to obtain. It’s fairly obtainable about mid seniority. Mainland layovers are both 2 and 3 day trips. Mostly rest for about 11-12 hours and fly back the next day. Some have a stand over day. Who knows how this will all change after the merger develops further.
I fly a lot interisland on Southwest. It is cool to hear the pilots going through their checklists. Thanks for giving us an insight into the life of a pilot!

Great video! I’ve been in Oahu for the last two weeks on my honeymoon. Unfortunately, we leave tomorrow headed back to DC. Flying United direct (sorry Big Ern, we are normally Southwest customers, but we wanted direct service to Oahu).

Great Island hopping video Cap! We were in Maui the October before the fires; it was an absolutely beautiful place! Quick question; regarding equipment scheduling, is it true that everything a particular aircraft does in a day is all considered one flight (broken into segments/flight numbers?)
Nice, I'm going to Hawaii in late October, can't wait. It's been 52 years since I have been. I was 11 yrs. old. Also what kind of sunglasses do you wear? Those look really nice.
