Muzzle gun hunts definitely have a nostalgic feel to them. Brings back memories for me chasing mtn bucks as a youngster. This video was as real and raw as they get and I enjoyed every second. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of the days when life was a bit simpler 👍🏻
@@406highlanders did something a little different this yr and went on a wilderness bighorn hunt to help a good friend. Sacrificed my elk season to do so but it was well worth it. Awesome trip!… just started hitting the mtns looking for a buck, still looking 🏔️
I feel cold and uncomfortable just watching this. These late season hunts are almost like punishment for not getting it done earlier. In all seriousness, great video. I love when folks put out content of last day's success. I remember these videos when I'm cold, wet, tired and hungry and I want to quit. Stories like these give me a little hope when I need it. Good job 👍.
Yes it is punishment, and after its done I tell myself "next year I'm shooting the first raghorn bull I see during bow season". Then by the next year I forget and start holding out again, just a slow learner I guess. Thanks for the great comment, I appreciate it
Thanks, I appreciate it. I was getting burned out by the time hunting season ended last year, I honestly wasn't even going to go out that day I killed this bull but decided to give it one more try.
A traditional muzzleloader elk hunt is on my bucket list, and if this hunt is a glimpse of how it will be i better get off my bucket and go before I'm too old to do it, Lol, great hunt and video, congratulations on your bull.
I really enjoyed your video. That was a nice bull. Of course, any elk you get with traditional muzzleloader is a good elk. Thanks for posting the video. Now I’m stoked for my black powder hunt.
Watched this multiple times love it. I'm gonna give it a go this season. I've got my work cut out for me. Need to do my research and could be a couple years before I get it figured out. Keep.up the videos. Looking forward to the new ones. God bless
@@traviscore8681 Thanks, appreciate the comment. Yeah it’s not that easy to get down, last year I went out again and hunted all day and was going to shoot the gun and it wouldn’t go off. I had a hell of a time getting it cleared out, lost several days of hunting. Good thing I didn’t see a giant. It is fun, good luck on your hunts
That was pretty damn cool ! Great video! Anyone who's stomped in deep snow know what hell it can play on your legs and lungs . I bow hunt for the majority of my critters but there something about the smell off black powder smoke and crisp morning air that just belongs together. Love it !!!
Congrats on harvesting your awesome bull elk ! A few post-kill questions if I may: 1) Did you have help hauling out those game bags, or was it literally just you ? 2) Time of day for kill ? If later in the day, did you hoist up the game bags into a tree and kept coming back to haul out the rest the next day ? 3) How far was your camp from the kill site ? Any 4x4 vehicle assist on roads some of the way, or did you hump it all on foot ?
Thanks and to question #1, I packed a heavy load out the day I killed the bull. I actually weighed that load. It was 108 pounds. I had help from my cousin the next day to pack out the rest of the bull. #2, it was pretty early in the day when I got the bull, 8:30-9:00 timeframe. It took the rest of the day to get bull boned out and I transferred all the meat about a half mile to a main trail and the one load out. Did not hang meat in a tree, it was late in the year and bears were not prevalent. It would have been a issue if earlier in year for there is a shitload of grizzly in this location. Kill site to trailhead was three and a half miles, all fairly flat but there was some deep snow drifts that hindered travel. No vehicle travel allowed.
@@406highlanders Thanks for your reply and the 'rest of the story' after your kill. Most hunters and their YT videos I watch don't go into much detail about the extreme level of physical effort necessary to successfully get that boned out meat back to camp and cooled down asap. Looks like I'll need to really ramp up the cardio, hill climbs and weight training I'm already doing. I drew a bull elk tag for norther Arizona this late Nov.
@@406highlanders Well, yes and no. Killing… yes. Giants… not quite. For the first time since I was a kid, I didn’t have an archery deer tag this year. .50 caliber round ball, with 90 grains of Pyrodex powder. I would guess the shot was around 80 yards. I'm pretty new to the muzzleloader game, it is fun though the little I've done. Flintlock sounds even more challenging
Congratulations! That’s pretty cool with the muzzle loader! Hope you didn’t have to pack him to far. And yes everyone should have cows. So they can feel real frustration. lol
Thanks, It wasn't super far pack out but the trail was drifted and packed hard, but not hard enough that you could walk on it with a heavy pack so you'd keep breaking thorough. It turned out to be a long day. How's that big moose tasting?
@@406highlanders nice to hear. They seam to tase better when you have to work hard. My moose is very good. I think the timing was right. They weren’t real rutted up when I took him. Hope you have a good fall down there.

They can hear you from a mile and a half if that snows crunchy like that. Can you please at least tell me what State you're in? I promise I'm not gonna hotspot an entire State.I just want to know where this exists?

I’ve hunted all over the western and central parts over the years. You almost have to keep changing areas. Wolves can really knock the game population down for awhile. Contrary to what the experts say, they don’t just kill the sick and weak. Colorado is about to find that out here pretty soon unfortunately
