357 Magnum S&W 4 inch barrel. Paid $110 dollars at the Naval exchange in Guam in 1968. Dead center shooter. Loved it when I was in my 30's. At 87 it weighs 5 pounds more than it did when I was 30 and kicks like a mule. Still take it out for a few rounds several times a year. My EDC is a Ruger LCR 38 special +P, fits in my pocket without pulling my britches down.

Check out, try shooting the LCR in 9mm? MUCH greater selection of premium performance defensive ammo, the 9mm LCR is built on the .357-version frame, and you'll see better ballistics from the 9mm rounds carried by today's law enforcement agencies. Velocities are every bit comparable to 3-inch semi-auto velocities.

Ironically enough, in certain applications a powerful revolver can actually serve as a better offensive firearm than a semiautomatic handgun in a smaller chambering. Especially when it's a revolver in at least .357 up to .44 Mag with a 3-4" barrel, an optic and speedloaders.
The whole package of, let's say a 4" .357 Mag with a red dot and a belt full of speed loaders, is a gun that's less adapted for pure defensive work and turns into something that takes on more of an offensive function. French GIGN operators have largely transitioned to Glocks and HKs by now, but each squad still keeps their Manhurin revolvers on hand, and maintains their ability to use them as they're the superior option to anything else in tight spaces full of bad guys.
For defensive use, history has proven with countless examples that a small-framed revolver in .38 is just the ticket for most people in most situations. There are objectively better options for civilians who can't spend much time training, but the advantage to a small revolver is that it's as simple as point and pull.

IMO, the most persuasive argument for a revolver is versatility. However good a semiauto may be for urban self-defense, it is necessarily limited to a relatively narrow range of ammunition. On the other hand, a .357 magnum will function reliably with everything from snake shot to rounds suitable for mountain lions and black bears. It's as close to a do-everything firearm as you can find. If I could have only one handgun, it would be a medium-frame .357 magnum revolver with a 3" or 4" barrel.

      @otumminelli หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I don’t know anyone who has lost a self-defense encounter because they didn’t have 15 rounds. It’s a myth that only works in theoretical training, but in real life, confrontations are resolved with 6 shots. If you have to reload, you need tactical training. But I think it will be some time before Hollywood movie publicity addresses this issue.

    • @chuckboy9372
      @chuckboy9372 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Well fkn said. Revolvers have major limitations in real gunfights with other armed assailants. Mainly ammunition capacity and reload speed. But in other situations like bear country and other big predator defense, the one shot stopping power of .357 and .44 magnum is unmatched. A +p load of heavy .357 is usually 1500 to 1700 fps out of a duty sized barrel and with manageable recoil produces 500 to 800 ft lbs. To put that into perspective, a full size 9 mm with very hot ammo can only hope to achieve 500 ft lbs. Not to mention, one handed firing is guaranteed to cycle the next round in a revolver, but in a semiauto there is high probability that under stress, with one handed firing, the gun will jam.

    • @itsapittie
      @itsapittie หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@chuckboy9372 Revolvers don't necessarily give up much to semis in civilian self-defense situations, either. The number of citizen-involved shootings which exceed 6 shots by the good guy is extremely small. I learned on revolvers and carried one on the streets as a police officer and I'm pretty good with it. I don't typically carry a revolver now, but I wouldn't feel completely screwed if that's what I had when the fight started.

What really got me into revolvers is that when it comes to carry, I have a couple beliefs. One is that your gun should be ready to fire when you draw it and pull the trigger. If you aren't comfortable with carrying a gun thats loaded, then you shouldn't carry it at all. When it comes to the purposes, you are carrying, which is self defense. You are already going to be way behind in the fact that the threat you are facing likely already has their weapon out and ready to go.. Adding any extra steps to that makes no sense.. But at the same time, I don't feel comfortable carrying a striker fired pistol in my pocket with it's light trigger pull. A revolver to me is a good compromise when it comes to readiness and safety.

I also have a 1985-vintage one in stainless I found in a gun shop a few years back. I hadn't known they were even made in stainless back then. That one is my tightest-locking revolver in my accumulation, which includes three Smith and Wesson models.
I also have an old Undercoverette ("ladies' model") in .32SWL that I picked up last year. Made in around 1970-1971, it's a pretty and dainty little thing.

I am teaching my nephew to shoot and have told him if he can master the revolver he will be able to shoot anything well. Wheel guns are not a handicap against two legged predators, they have been used effectively for over a century and a half for that very purpose.
Besides, too many semi-auto gurus are fixated on the mass of brass in the air as opposed to the more relevant amount of lead in the target!
The type and weight of projectiles available for any given revolver caliber offers a plethora of possibilities regarding stopping power/penetration
concerns and exigencies. Ergo: .357 mag. from 95 gr. up to 180 gr., quite a few steel rams have been knocked over at 200m using bullets of
158 to 180gr., using a 6 in or better barrel length. My 6 in. Dan Wesson in .357 mag has done this loads of times, admittedly my .44 mag does it
more consistently/reliably in my Dan Wesson, but if you do your part, the cartridge revolver combo will do its part and deliver the goods.
In all honesty, with what amounts to a logical approach to any dilema, one does not pick a handgun in any defencive scenario as a first choice option.
Be it for two or four legged predators, you want the power and accuracy of a long gun should you have the option in any life and death scenario.
I have carried both semi-autos and revolvers in sticky situations, in urban settings, it matters less but, in the wilds, the wheelgun gets the nod!
( My first handguns were a custom Browning High-Power and a Charter Arms Police Bulldog 4'' in 38 spl. purchased together back in the 1970s )

    Spot on!
I have two of each but since I’ve began shooting (1975) I’ve had the privilege of shooting many weapons (not including my military service time).
For revolvers I’m a S&W guy (though my first revolver was a Ruger .22 S/A convertible).
My only gripe (as many will attest to) is that stupid side lock on the newer Smith revolvers.
It just takes away from the cool aesthetics of the gun.
Other than that, they are well made but getting pricey.
I carry speed loaders since a 6-shooter is all you can chamber.
    I currently have a Smith 686 plus in 3” so I get 7 shots.
I’ve had two different Smith 8-shooters (N-Frames) and they are a beast to carry! lol
    I’m mainly a .357 guy though I’ve owned a Model 29 chambered in .44 mag.
It comes down to many factors, and today ammo is expensive, so I keep my revolvers all in .357 and buy bulk.
.357 ammo is very, very versatile and still reasonably priced.
We can talk ballistics all day so I won’t go there, but he’s right, it couldn’t hurt to have a few revolvers around.
You can go to practically any shooting range and rent any revolver .

First. I am historically a proponent of the Browning design (Government Model or - rather sloppily - '1911'). The design is reliable, the .45 ACP round is quite useful and recoil is not abusive.
However, I have taken to carrying a revolver. it is a short barreled S&W K frame (Mod 10) using +p rounds.
I find it much easier to conceal and manipulate (using the 'comfort station', putting it in the lockbox when visiting the hospital or county court house, storing at home and so forth) than the bigger and heavier Government Model.
I find double action more accurate than single action when shooting quickly. I have a copy of "Secrets of Double Action Shooting" by Bob Nichols. (Published in 1950 as I recall.)
    Listening intently.
I have a 2.5 inch M19. I like it, but find the adjustable sights to be a bit big and a snag danger. The short cartridge ejection irritates me as well. I rather like the four inch version as a belt gun.
Yet more and more I realize the concept of a quick reload is valuable only in the various forms of '(im) practical pistol' competition.
In reality, I have realized if I have fired more than four rounds and not solved the immediate problem, I have far greater need of an undertaker or wound specialist than more ammunition.
10mm Auto is a very powerful round. The main problem it has is it is neither fish nor fowl. In a defense handgun, it has too much recoil for most people and as a large game cartridge, it is borderline weak.
The .40 S&W round does well for defensive use with moderate recoil. The main problem with the .40 is the competition for sales with the 9x19mm cartridge which seems to be more popular. (Not better, more popular.)

"Accuracy trumps power" That's interesting... Power/energy/concussion is the only thing you'll have control over in a bear attack.
The odds of getting off more than 1 or 2 shots accurately at a charging bear... Is slim to none with any type firearm.
      12 ga is best...
In the grand scheme of things, The number of 10mm bear defense encounters is comparatively small... It hasn't proven anything!

I am a Tokarev guy. Specifically Zastava. I carry a M70AA and have my surplus M57 in my truck. I also carry wheel guns. They are more of the budget option, but i still love them none the less. I am a wierdo when it comes to my selection, but i love the simplicity of a Tokarev over the 1911. The Tokarev you can argue was the glock of World War 2 service weapons. It has fewer parts than the 1911. Yet it is single action, has a browning action, but is slimmer. That's specially the reason i carry a full size M70AA. One it's in 9mm. Two it's got a full sized slide. One can argue that an M88A is smaller. I like having the option of the larger slide and extra round. I usually carry revolvers as a backup or a bag gun. I understand i may get flak, but i am 40 and have back problems from my service in the Marines. Well, revolvers are the best purse gun because it won't jam. If you buy a cheap ccw pack, you can have a good setup that's not expensive just in case you need to shoot through the bag.

The ballistic testing shows .357 hard cast having more penetration than its Buffalo Bore 10mm counterpart which is what you need for a bear caliber. It also helps that my revolver is an 8 shooter. During the 1800s, a revolver was needed to overcome the obvious disadvantage of a single-shot sidearm.
During the 1st-half of the 1900s, a revolver was needed since most of the world’s developed countries were using them for their military and police forces. Most ammunition being manufactured WERE FOR revolvers.
During the latter-half of the 20th century, it was debatable whether revolvers were still needed in light of the foregoing trend of using the 9mm high-capacity “wündernine” pistols.
Presently, there are DOZENS of semiautomatic pistols in the open market to choose from. Most are very good. A few are excellent. A small group are sub-marginal in design, aesthetics, AND functionality.
Modern revolver manufacturers number about 8. The “Big 3” revolver makers - Colt, Ruger, and Smith & Wesson - concentrate on double-action models that typically range in caliber between .35 to .45.
There appears to be three categories of double-action revolvers as follows.
    1. Compact concealable models that typically chamber 5 rounds and are designed to be for self-defence and/or backup.
    2. Large-frame models that chamber some of the most powerful cartridges ever developed. These are behemoths intended for protection against the largest 4-legged animals.
    3. Large-frame models designed to chamber 9x33mmR (aka .357 Magnum) cartridges in their 7 OR 8 round cylinders.
I frequently CARRY a few models in category 1. I frequently also WEAR two models in category 2 lieu of a semi-auto during winter months when I can conceal the large frame better.
WHEN I WEAR a large revolver, I also carry a smaller semiauto so that when I run the “eightgun” dry, I don’t mistake the spare magazine for a revolver reload.
Same goes for when I WEAR a large semiauto and a smaller revolver.
For me, it’s NOT that I am compelled to “NEED” a revolver as much as that it has become so ingrained in my martial discipline that I no longer even give it a fleeting thought about its efficacy as a fighting sidearm.

@ so I’ve never experienced a regular GP100, but I did a ton of research.
What you get with the match champion versus the original gp100:
      1. The hogue wood grips ($100 value alone)
      2. The half lug of the barrel - some prefer it, some don’t. Supposedly it balances the 4” versions better.
      3. Polished internals - I don’t know how this translates to performance, but supposedly it helps
      4. The Novac sights - much better than the basic sights that the original gp100 comes with.
Considering that the match champion was only about $100-120 more than the original GP100 in all the websites I’ve looked into, I’d say the wood grips and the sights alone are worth the extra money. The other stuff is just a bonus.
The only reason why I would say it’s not worth it is if you know exactly what customizations you want to make.

It's weird that this video popped up in my feed at this particular time. I looked at a 686+ today and I'm thinking about going back and buying it.

Frame 0.11 what holster are you using to carry the 1911? Is it exclusively used for the range or do you also CCW with it?

    G20 unreliable? Yeah ok
10mm not as strong as the 357 yeah ok
    6 shot vs 15 +1 sure
10 mm 200gr hardcast was man for bears lol
But I do agree everyone should have a revolver
Let’s not forget the g21 in 460 rolwand is a thing of beauty and puts up 1000 foot pounds of energy

Just shows he has no real cred. G20 is good bear medicine especially w hardcasts.

10mm at its heaviest loads is similar to the average 357mag.
Capacity gives a false sense of security.
200 gr hard cast is promoted as bear capable to sell ammunition as the hype continues to surround the 10mm.

Definitely in your fudd era. 10mm out of a Glock or an fn is extremely reliable and proven against bear. Just get a revolver because they’re awesome. Failures do happen in revolvers and when they do they’re typically catastrophic.

At 70 I carry a S/W 442 with Plus p's.. I mostly carry my S/W 66..3"barrel round butt.. I do love a 1911.. I have owned many..I still carry my Springer TRP with some custom work..good winter carry gun.... A lesson..if you carry, always carry.. atbthe store my brother was in shopping at 0600.. there was a whack job chasing folks around with a machete'.. He was able to fend the guy off with his cart!!.. Now we both carry ALWAYS!!

Love the 2 1/2 inch 19 but they make rather poor pocket carry and I can’t see them cooperating with gym shorts or sweats. On the other hand, after winding up 33 years of LE, in reflection, a revolver was sufficient for everything I ever did. Actually, the Colt King Cobra or Viper 3 inch versions are intriguing, though an an alloy frame is better for pocket carry.

Everyone who carries a gun for self-defense should own at least one revolver for that purpose. A J frame in .38 Special or similar is not necessarily a bad choice, but know its limitations.

For years and years, armed professionals off duty carried snubnose 5 and 6 shot revolvers and trusted their lives to them. I know that was mostly in the days before high capacity semi autos came along but how much time is anyone going to have to shoot up a 15 to 17 round magazine? I think that in the real world where a real person would have to defend themself, a snub would do fine as long as the person carrying it practiced with it.

    • @HALO-2304
      @HALO-2304 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

@TwoWeekCowboy Practice is definitely required, especially reloads. I came to my conclusion by way of an unfortunate, but thankfully not too serious accident. I was in a car accident many years ago, and my injuries left me unable to rack the slide on my semiautos. The only revolver I had was a 4" 1965 Colt Python, not something I really wanted to resort to for self-defense due to it being expensive to replace, and I didn't have a holster for it. I've since acquired a S&W 640.

Ok. You need a 70s vintage Clot Detective special , blue finish. Next a 4 inch S&W 19, paired with. 4 inch 22 model 19, older vintage not the new classic series. Next a 6 inch Colt Python 357 in blue , reissue version is decent and affordable, last a Colt SAA or replica in 357 . Then you can call yourself a revolver guy
