    Summary: Cherry is a Christian and has had lifelong experiences that lead her to conclude that her God is real. When pressed, the reason she is able to say that her belief is true is because of faith. However, Cherry curiously shifts faith from being a necessary component during the belief formation process to something you receive after you believe in the God.

      Although it is sometimes realy hard to listen to, but not because they make weird claims, stupid arguments, because we all do that to some extend, but sometimes I see my former self in their answers, and I feel ashemed, that it took me 19 years to come to the conclusion that there (with ha high chance) is no deity.
      Ok it didn't take me 19 years but 2 from the first doubts to fully examined the dogmat I was tought, but some of them now seem so childish (especially those on a personal expariance level), that it buggs me a bit that I hold them until I was around 17/18.

    • @tomasvojvoda8420
      @tomasvojvoda8420 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I am interested in why you would skip such an important part? I mean, the basic question of SE is "how can you be so sure"? This was her answer to the question "I have seen miracles with my own eyes". I fail to see how is it in the spirit of genuinly trying to find out the truth and the answer to "how can you be sure?" if you outright dismiss and skip the answer(for whatever reason I guess)..
      Please someone explain to me how skipping her answer is beneficial to finding the truth? I got the feeling, even from your summary, Anthony, that you have outright rismissed that as a nonsense.
      And I mean if I saw on my own eyes, clear as day, that a cloudiness from a blind persons eyes would disappear and they would see, I would be awstruck. And is quite understandable that person already accepting the existence of God would find stong faith in that moment. I would probably reacted differently, because of my sceptical nature, but that is not the point, right? the point is why are they sure, not me.

    It took me until about 20 minutes in until I understood what "shifting faith" meant in the title. Cherry reminds me of my mom a little bit. She' seems happy with who she is. As far as my mom goes she's going to be 82 next month, so I leave her alone. Church is a big part of both my parent's lives. They're Methodists so their beliefs are pretty liberal. Cherry seems very comfortable with her beliefs. She's probably got a strong social group in her church too.

    • @5avan10
      @5avan10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Agreed, this is my mom also. We simply don't discuss religion. When she brings it up I just smile and wait patiently to change the subject; to do anything else would only create barriers, and no matter how gentle I am she would see it as a personal attack and feel hurt by it. She's built her entire life around her faith; at this late stage of the game, there's just no point trying to challenge it. It would be like trying to introduce an eagle to the wild after it had been raised and kept in captivity for 90% of its natural life. I mean, what's the point?

      i've said elsewhere in these vids, my ex girlfriend is schizophrenic and it only took me one week to realise "you're imagining things" doesn't cut any ice. unless she's doing something harmful there's no point in calling out every little delusion. she was in total denial when we first met but i tried to explain that there is a theory of multiple universes, and that i don't always see what she sees, so to try and consult with me when she feels threatened, and i've had to use my own SE style to wheedle things out of her, she's still hard work, but at least we can talk about her mental health without psychotic episodes. if you can step back from wanting "truth", talking like anthony does can yield interesting results, people and their beliefs are fascinating.

    One thing we atheists forget, and that I find fascinating considering I used to do this when I was a Christian.. is that when someone like this is talking to you they think their very words are guided by the Lord AND they cannot allow themselves to think for themselves or question anything because THE LORD IS LISTENING. Anytime I would have doubts I would feel so guilty and beg the Lord for forgiveness. It was only when I realized that if God is so real then not only should he not be offended by my questioning but the very act of questioning should lead me to answers that would allow me to be ever more certain.. but alas many of these questions are unanswerable.. one is only left to shrug and say "God works in mysterious ways". And when pressed most Christians won't truly be satisfied with that answer.

This is a masterclass in SE. Having the patience to sit through 10 minutes of her rambling stories whilst picking out little details and remembering points she had made in there, and then using them later in the conversation is a real skill. I don’t think there’s much more you could have done here and you can hear in the last 10 minutes the cogs slowly start to turn as she struggles in vain to explain her beliefs. Well done.

    A less than optimal conversation that was saved by your excellent summary at the end. I do feel that you should reconsider your policy of not immediately sharing the address to your TH-cam channel. That might be a good idea at times, but in cases like this, I do feel that Cherry would benefit from hearing her words again from a third person perspective. Otherwise she will probably describe this conversation to her friends as a great success for her reasoning skills. She won't remember that she made that faith switch. In her mind her faith got challenged by an unbeliever who wouldn't even accept her praying for him, and by lord did she give him the right answers!

In my eyes, the fact that Cherry changed her position on faith tells me she never really thought deeply about this topic before and was sorting it out throughout the interview. You exposed a kink in the armor, but it's going to take quite a few more blows before she realizes the reasons she holds for her beliefs are flawed.

    Hey Anthony. Great Video as always. I was asking myself about what you said in the end of the video: "I learned early on, to not participate in things like that, when its not clear if the believe they hold is true." Maybe you could explain a bit more about the reasoning behind it. I somehow feel like it would be interesting to see and hear what they would pray and do, and after that, asking them how we could test if the prayer worked.

  • @AtheistEve
    @AtheistEve 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If I had experienced miracles like raising the dead and blind people regaining their sight directly after intercessionary prayer, I absolutely wouldn’t be using faith to believe in that God. So I always find it amazing that, after giving concrete examples like that, that people such as Cherry would even bother using the word faith.
    She didn’t start at the beginning of her faith journey though, she must already have believed in this God to be going on a Christian mission to proselytize to Muslim African villagers. So, if Cherry had been raised a Muslim or Hindu, would she now be trying to convert people to a different religion?
    I think it’s best to decline the offer of chanting, prayers and spells. It would feel like pandering to someone’s ego or delusions.

    Found this online:
    Hands may also hold the self, such as when people hold their own hands, typically for comfort. Wringing the hands indicates more extreme nervousness.
    Holding the self can also be an act of restraint. This can be to let the other person talk. It can also be used when the person is angry, effectively stopping them from attacking.

    One thing a lot of the interlocutors seem to have in common is believing based on multiple reasons. If a particular reason dissolves under serious scrutiny they can still fall back on the other reasons to continue their belief. If the reasons are numerous and complex enough, rebutting all of them becomes impossible. It makes me wonder where I've employed this in my own beliefs. To a certain extent it makes sense: if I have 5 reasons for a belief and I'm 95% confident in each of them, the chance all are wrong is less than 1 in a million. But in practice it doesn't seem to work like that.

    Thank you for explaining why who chose to speak the Mustlim religion. Personally, I would've gone with Buddhism, which I think people have a hard time finding the "evil" in. I think going with another religion she claims to "know" about and is stuck on the facts of why it's "wrong" was not the best way to go.
    I know you don't go tit-for-tat with examples / "evidence"; I would've had a hard time holding back my comments about the violence of "God" Himself in the Old Testament! I thought her explanation of God being responsible for ONLY the good was interesting... never heard that before. This brings up so many more questions for me. Her healing examples are overwhelming; i wouldn't know how to begin examining that.

    I’ve had similar conversations with older people. I feel that, with a lifetime of anecdotal evidence and devaluing “doubt” there is a lot bad ideas to unpack. and maybe because they’ve based their whole life on the idea, it might be difficult to consider a method of testing a claim.
    I seriously suspect this idea of “just believing”, seems to be pervasive in a lot in older people, leading them to be victims of charlatans. She seems like a generally nice person, who’s honestly never considered the idea that one could be basing a deeply held belief on something that’s untrue.
    I definitely look forward to a follow up conversation❤️

    11 minutes in is a great example of the religious person not truly thinking about the meaning of what they say. She briefly mentions a hurricane that damaged her house and says "it's ok, the lord built it once he can build it again" well he does have some carpentry background but the telling point comes right after Anthony offers his condolences. She says she's a lot better off than a lot of people who got hit a lot worse and lost everything, she says "I'M VERY BLESSED". which suggests she believes her house was damaged less than others because the Lord decided to have it that way. She's very blessed because for some reason she was singled out for favour by her god. The arrogance of that is huge. God picked me over all these other people, I'm MORE blessed than they are because my house survived a storm.
    Maybe she should thank the people who actually built her house instead.

    Just watching the beginning. She went from being very unsure of herself and her ability to preach, which is what she thought Anthony was going to ask her to do. Because most religious discussion is proselytizing, not discussion, and I always struggled with such conversation when I was a believer.
    But the way he flipped that around so fast and got her to accept the discussion, really says leaps and bounds about SE. Just describing what it is gets people willing to examine their beliefs even if they were violently against trying to describe their faith.
