  • WHAT IS LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL?
This week we’re doing something a little different and that's talking about Shudder’s Late Night With The Devil! I saw a handful of people wanting me to do a video on this movie since it kind of fits into the analog horror genre. I thoroughly enjoyed this film when I first watched it and can’t wait to get into it. The style was incredibly captivating and I really hope we get some more horror flicks in this vein getting more attention.

One small detail I found really compelling during the Kristu scene is how he has a very obviously fake accent for a majority of his screen time (in order to seem more legitimate) but when he has the last reading he loses the accent, showing just how real and grave it was.

“The Grove” is based on the real life Bohemian Grove. It’s pretty much exactly how it’s described in the movie.

There are alot of similarities which you might have noticed if u wasn't trying to be a smart ass .. Why would they mention "the grove" and not call it by its real name. I see alot of this movie went over your head so this question wasn't for you .. In a scene later in the movie, Car is talking to the mother and sister of the dead boy who reveal that, upon entering the studio, they filled out questionnaires and talked to the woman who helped Christou when he fell. While it seems like a genera reference to hot reading, a practice where a fake psychic gathers information beforehand and acts like he’s receiving it through supernatural means, it could also be a reference to Peter Popoff, a megachurch pastor busted for doing almost the exact same thing. He would collect prayer cards from his parishioners which they wrote their prayer intentions on, and his wife would sometimes talk to them in the church foyer. She would then feed him this information through an earpiece and he would act like he was receiving revelations from God

    • @TheCrimsonElite666
      @TheCrimsonElite666 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It could also be a reference to Cody and Satori, who are caretakers of the conjuring house and they seemingly have an ability where they can communicate with the dead by holding hands together. They've been caught conning people multiple times, with one piece of evidence being the fact that they will only do their magic trick for people that have already signed an agreement with them. It's not hard to believe that it gives them enough time to do some background research so they can fool the person to think that they're really speaking to a dead relative. John Wolfe has two videos on the subject that provides more evidence that they're using elaborate tricks to make people believe that they have a paranormal ability.

Late Night with the Devil got a "HOLY SHIT!" out of me. The ending was anticlimactic, but goddamn, this movie was awesome. It's my 2024 horror movie of the year. And while you mention that this is an analog horror movie, you're right. According to IMDb, one of the tags is analog horror.

    • @hansshekelstein9450
      @hansshekelstein9450 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

@@LiminalLumineerI’ve got to say I disagree. I was brought in by the style of the movie and it’s techniques, but they completely drop it at the end, and it’s just a regular movie message. I don’t mean to be mean but I can’t find the right word other than dummy proof.
It’s like they didn’t have faith in us to be piecing stuff together or to be invested in a movie entirely shot this way, so they added in a ton of backstage regular filming and the ending is completely out of the style the rest of the movie, which makes it anticlimactic to me.
The ending isn’t really predictable either. They did an awesome job with the clues at the start (Secret Society, no known cause for lung cancer), but they just kind of waste that by making the ending all in his head and tell us outright what he did.
Imagine if instead, we pieced it together from inter spliced seemingly non related documentary bits about cults and his secret society. Some of his past, his wife’s seemingly random diagnosis and his major successes despite being a bit awkward starting out. Then have the demon know him and start revealing to him little by little about what he caused you know? We would piece things together a bit slower but his character would increasingly become more withdrawn as he realized throughout the last half.
You could even make a bit of an allegory at the end, instead of having a big flashback in his head, have the ending literally be just him killing the girl or other stars viewed entirely from a camera or something. There is an edit of the “How about another joke” scene from joker, which adds a few filters and plays it on an analog tv, and it’s seriously a little disturbing. The film grain makes the headshot look like an actual low quality snuff film, and I think the murders at the end, shown entirely through what would normally be our perspective on a TV show would really be twice as creepy and unsettling, because it would really look like a murderous supernatural awful event caught on live TV.
You could even have him get his wish again in a twisted way, the show probably would be the most viewed thing if he did that sort of thing, and then you could have an ironic twist of the demon giving him what he wanted again, but like how the last time it cost his wife, this time it would be the end of his career and freedom.
I’m not trying to say that would be good, I’m definitely not qualified but the ending seems anticlimactic in the ways that it abandons the style, and there isn’t any sort of growth, punishment or redemption for his character. He just kind of realizes he was the cause for his wife’s death and then it’s over.

Imo that’s a really big nitpick. Since it really doesn’t take from the movie much anyway. This movie is really similar to a movie called Wnuf. You watch a Halloween special on a new station that has been recorded on vhs. You get to see the commercials that aired too.
I feel like if they did the same here, it wouldn’t have been as effective. Especially with the beginning being an intro to Jack’s career leading up to this. It would have been cool to see a tv shot backstage, as it would be believable for some of the crew to watch and make sure things are running smoothly for viewers back home too.
But the change in camera quality and desaturation works really well. The contrasts really enhances the tone of the movie overall. And the rapid switches creates feelings of anxiety and disorientation.

Like maybe by doing so he opted out of whatever deal he made early and was cursed by this monkey's paw-esque version of fame (becoming infamous for being the show host where everyone died on his program). I don't know anything about gnosticism myself, but I know that Christianity had a habit of calling deities from other cultures "demons" or the devil, as they did with Pan. I think their choice to refer to Mr. Wriggles as a demon is more representative of the popular view of fringe religious figures and the time's obsession with Satanism rather than the writers' ignorance of gnosticism (although, again, I'm writing this as someone who is ignorant of gnosticism myself).

I was planning on watching this in the cinemas but my SO talked me out of it, arguing it might be better if we streamed it instead to feel the “TV talk show vibes” even more. And you know what, I think he was right. Watching it on “TV”, or just a smaller screen, made us immerse in the late night talk show conceit even more. It really felt like we were watching it “live”.

I honestly feel like this movie was more reminiscent of docudramas that came out in the 80s and 90s, such as Special Bulletin and Without Warning, two underrated made for TV films that still blow me away when I go back to watch them. Yes, there are a lot of elements of analog horror in this film (and the scene where a demonic face appears through the static is something I thought only my nightmares could create), however the stylistic approach of a late night talk show makes me feel as though this resembles those docudramas closer, specifically how the darker dramatic elements came in for those films. If you haven’t watched them, I would highly recommend watching Special Bulletin or Without Warning, both of which are available on TH-cam and are underrated gems that deserve more praise.

I think the hypnosis with Carmichael adds so much more to this movie that moves it from the predictable category where everyone imagines its going to go to something new where it adds a level of confusion to everything afterwards to the viewer the same as it is to jack where now your asking what actually happened and what didnt.

So i don’t know if many know what Analog Horror is. But to the people who do not know. Here’s a quick description that I can come up with
Analog Horror is a sub-genre of horror, that utilizes the use of old analog technology. (Old cam recorders, news broadcasts from the 60’s to the 80’s. VHS tapes and other tech from that era.)
Edit: this is just like the surface layer that I can come up with. Analog Horror can get much deeper then what I’ve said.

I really enjoyed the movie until the AI controversy (I was kinda hoping they were using AI as an aiding tool like Spiderman into the Spider verse, but I was smoking too much hopium) and that made me put off. Like they did great job on the 70s affect, but to chose AI instead of hiring an artist is just downright insulting and lazy.
Other than that, I thought it was unique and good (and apparently the ghost of Jack's wife was seen throughout the movie: sort of like an easter egg). And I was gonna think you'll mention the skeleton guy and the devil guy too as it's kinda ashamed they were often seen throughout the movie but nothing is said besides they're were amongst the cultists.

The Grove sounds like a clear reference to the real life Camp David, but I agree with the other comment about Bohemian Grove. There's more than one IRL "cult of rich people networking in the woods"
Carmichael Heigh sounds like a James Randi reference, especially the episode where he exposes Peter Popoff's grift, either James Randi or Penn/Jilette have a similar cash prize for proving the supernatural
Also, I understand the need to keep depicting Carmichael as an antagonist, though I think the movie he was more of a foil to the other characters. To anyone unsuspecting of what was coming next, he would have kept them grounded until the scares began. In real life, people like James Randi do a lot of good work revealing hoaxes, grifters, and scammers (e.g. megachurch pastors hearing god when it's actually their wife in the earpiece spying on people)

Late Night With the Devil - Inconsistency with the Hypnosis Worm-Phobia Scene.
Upon playback the skeptic magician says "Because something dreadful is about to happen. It's dawning on you. Hear that? Ghostly sounds; Anguished moaning from beyond." A befuddled Jack Delroy then mutters (almost under his breath) "That's not the way I remember it.."
There are a lot of things in the playback recording that are (in hindsight) obvious hallucinations; the writhing worms crawling out of the sidekicks skin primarily BUT..the above text I quoted is new dialogue differing from what the hypnotist spoke live on air. In fact when ghostly murmuring is heard during the live hypnosis he simply says nothing while Gus says "What is that? DO you hear that?" as the skeptic stares ominously. Now an easy, lazy explanation for this would be that 'it's just another hallucination'. But is that not strange that a seemingly trivial line of dialogue is spoken on the playback video and Jack already realizes the recording has deviated from the live demonstration..before the gut wrenching hallucination manifests itself? Seems like something the story teller wants us to catch but at the same time nothing about the added dialogue seems cryptic either. Thoughts?
P.S. On a more light-hearted note, did anyone catch Jack Delroy losing arm wrestling to a midget live on air during the montage in the first 10 minutes?

When I watched it I couldn’t get my suspension of disbelief going because the video and audio quality is way too perfect to pass off as a show from the 70’s. Yet also at the same time the insane amount of commercial breaks made it feel like I was watching an actual real tv show.
I do like that throughout the whole episode it’s very hard to tell what spooky stuff was scripted by the tv producers and what was legit spooky stuff that wasn’t planned by anyone.

The TV actually disappointed me because of how obvious it was. The quiet tv suddenly makes a static sound, and the camera is fixed on the tv as her face appeared.
Especially considering earlier in the film, his wife could be seen for a brief moment in a full length mirror as the camera followed the action backstage. No audio cue or hint that anything was amiss. It was the ideal way to do the gag, and the TV kind of dampened it for me.

I mean Ghostwatch was broadcast on the BBC as a sort of Halloween special so that might disqualify it. But what about The WNUF Halloween special?
