Sena 50R Battery life and charging in Real life. Just got a double pack of Sena 50R and tested a few things at home ( first upload latest firmware 1.09 from 1.03 and fully charge ) with both units connected at the same time approx 5 meters (15 feet) between. Battery life with full radio music at 75% volume non-stop and at the same time Mesh connection, 2.0 and connection to the mobile (3x con) which draws extra power from the battery at the same time gave about 7.5 - 8.0 hours (No batteries are exactly the same so they got some small difference in power) With no Mesh 2.0 and with only Music/Radio it will bee longer. Very impressive. With a 3 amp, 15-watt charger Charging 20 min about 75% and 5-6 hours of use showed battery in the app (Take it with a pinch of salt as the app showed some strange values sometimes). Full charge in 1 hour with a 3 amp (15 watts) charger then it turned the charge off by itself. In my case only 50 min with a 3.0 amp (15-watt charger). But it does not work a normal (old) USB 2.0 and 1 amp charge from eg a laptop ( USB 2.0 1amp 5watt) then you probably get double or triple the time. Recommend a USB charger 2.0 -3.0 amp or 10-15 watt and new cables USB 3.0 then it goes fast (old USB 1.0 0.5 amp 2.5 watts will take over the night). The Charge source and cables are of great importance when you want a quick charge. I've had some cheap, Chinese, no name Bluetooth headsets from Amazon for 7years now. They were $120/pair. No weather rating on them at all. I've ridden in several thunderstorms and pouring rain for hours over the years and they are still working fine. My guess is you'll be fine with any reputable brand, regardless of weather rating. Unless I got lucky with my pair..
@@JDuBz815 Tbh, I have some mates who did the same. A cheap ‘no frills’ set off eBay and they are still working over five years later. Not sure if they’ve upped their game now but lots of reviews for Sennas had complaints of water getting in and knackering them
@@JDuBz815 What, that Senas have/had problems with water getting in? Honestly, it happens. (And wouldn’t surprise me if there are mentions of it elsewhere in these posts)
I feel like I’m watching a 2016 Cardo Packtalk video. Welcome to the mesh club, Sena...better (years) late than never! Yes, I know the 30K was “mesh”, but I owned one and I’m purposely omitting that goose.......you’re welcome.
Returned my 50R. They did a small improvement on speaker but still mediocre. Gets distorted. And the bad part is the noise cancelling. It cannot identify voice or just noise. The results? Music and open mesh at the same time is very aggravating. Whenever you rev your bike the music fades. Also any noise without talking music fades. Got cardo bold and its lightyears ahead with Sena
I have the Bold and the JBL speaker is not that impressive or it may be that the Bold just can’t drive it hard enough. I had to go to molded ear buds to hear music at road speed.
LTVoyager I had the same experience with my PacTalk Bold with JBL. When riding with ear plugs (as any intelligent rider should) I was unable to hear my music or the com channel with my riding buddy using the same unit. Additionally the battery life was way too short. I returned it and went back to using my old Sena 20S
Honestly don't see a single reason to go with either of these vs. an offering from Cardo for half the price...a 2-pack from Packtalk or Freecom from Amazon is same price (or a bit over) as a single one of these... That's a no from me dawg.
The price from revzilla for either the Sena 50 or the Cardo bold are the exact same price. Yes you can get cheap units for less. But you are comparing the top end units.
@@Axel_trouble Yeah that guy is an idiot. In fact, the new Cardo Black is $90 MORE than the 50R making the Sena a no brainer. For $90 less you get USB-C, fast charging, BT 5.0 and open mesh. Both Cardo and Sena are heavily flawed units though so pick your poison.
I’m using 20S, and like the 10S, no music and intercom at the same time without audio dropouts. So, what I’m more interested in is better speaker 🔊 technology and less intercom frustration.
There are videos out there that do so . I myself have a Cardo and I love it . Easy to use especially when you download the app cardo has for it . I ride a lot and I honestly get around 10-12 hours out of a full charge . The audio is good enough , both with the music and the intercom . And you could buy separate JBL speakers for it . But overall I’m satisfied
@@Axel_trouble I think Sena's are water resistant enough unless you like riding in a torrential downpour. Add to the fact that the 50R/S has USB-C, fast charging, BT 5.0 and open mesh put it above the Cardo.
3 or more riders: Cardo Packtalk for premium features. 3 or less rider: Yideng BT-S2/S3 budget comm that works, upgrade headset speaker to a JBL standalone.
USB-C and maybe the thinner speakers (if your helmet can't fit the JBLs) are the only advantages Sena has over the Cardo units. The Long Way Home channel did a great comparison that shows how Cardo is still king with the Packtalk.
BT 5.0 and better battery (life and charging speed), too, I think ... but Cardo should really implement those soon; they are due, and surely don’t want to give away ground to Sena ... 😏
NOPE, I disagree with the above statement. I too was sold on the JBL speakers but with no EQ? I can't even adjust my JBL speakers on my PackTalk Bold. The volume isn't even loud enough at speeds over 70mph on my adventure bike. My next com system will most likely be the SENA 50C. Well done Spurge.
Went with the 50s only because of compatibility with my father riding with a sena unit. Had to send the first one back for a bad speaker and the second one has a bad microphone. The "improved" speakers do sound better but they are much quieter than my old smh5-fm unit.
You may need to adjust the volume on your phone or on the unit directly, because the new speakers on the Sena were given a large audio level boost especially compared to the SMH5-FM from 5+ years ago. Sometimes the unit might also need to be updated but we tested the speakers level compared to the older units and it was most definitely louder while also being clearer. @@RevZilla phone and unit maxed out. The left speaker on the first set was so bad that I tested it against the right one for frequency response and it was much worse at higher tones and inaudible. Second set was improved but not by much. Seems to be a QC issue. Other speakers tested fine.
If you do reviews like this, could you please DEMO the units? I have a 20S and I hate the wheel. Too many button combos to do simple stuff. The price is about the same between units, but I wish the 50S didn't have a wheel. Is if far simpler than my 20S to use?
If you are not a fan of the 20S or 50S wheel, the high end 50 series also comes in a 50R variant that uses a three button layout. There will still be a learning curve for memorizing button combos however.
I had the spider and after 2 of them quit I went up to the 50s and it’s nice an all but it’s way too quiet. You can barley hear it on the highway on a pretty quiet helmet an both it and my phone are maxed out on volume.. I’d like something that’s just a bit louder and more suited to music since I mainly ride solo anyways.
FWIW, the maximum volume for most manufactures are nearly identical with these comm systems. Some will have equalizers that you can boost some features, but overall loudness remains the same. You might need to adjust where the speaker is relative to your ears, or wear ear plugs to help remove the wind noise from the equation. We can blast down the highway on naked bikes / cruisers etc, while recording audio and still hear everyone in the chat and music playing with ear plugs in. Getting rid of that ambient wind noise will help hear the music nearly 2x louder.
Just to point out that Cardo units are rated at IP67 and are relatively waterproof (backed by the manufacturer) whereas Sena units are NOT waterproof or water resistant in any way. Sena units come with 'dust covers' for open ports and button gaiters etc but are not suitable for rain! Sena make no mention of 'weatherproofing of any of its product documentation. I live in Northern England and found out the hard way. Wet weather riders be warned!
This. I'm using the old SRLs that fit with the Neotec 2 and the unit itself is perfect, but the audio quality could use some work. If I don't have the windshield all the way up I have to put them pretty high volume to hear the music on the highway, and at that volume they distort an unfortunate amount. Honestly, I can hear the speakers on my bike way clearer than the speakers in the Shoei.
I've had the 50S since early June, I bought it mainly for phone functions like music, calling, assistants while riding. The Hey Sena doesn't work at all for me now, Hey Siri does however.. I feel this thing is pretty expensive for what it is, but seems everything motorcycle is expensive. The app doesn't have landscape mode. The audio is nice but the adaptive volume (music) is silly, if you turn the music down it'll just adjust it to max volume again in seconds (I feel like it should honor a max setting of the jog wheel). I did a factory reset to see if maybe upgrading firmware left some bad settings but still the same. Audio quality is good, but I don't have anything to compare it too. I bought this because a riding buddy is a Sena user, sad its like everything else and you have to buy into ecosystems. I've never used the comms yet, yes my riding buddy hasn't actually ridden with me.. lol
Just bought the 50S today and you're wrong it is so quiet Compared to my cardo freecom 2X unlike the senna you can actually hear the music blaring while I still have the helmet on me
Man, back when I got my Cardo 2 or 3 years ago I figured maybe I should wait until Sena comes out with their next unit. Good thing I pulled the trigger, years later and just now on par with Cardo if I am understanding all the features correctly. Are these water proof/resistant?
Every video needs to, in editing, mute the trigger words for smart devices. That should absolutely be a no-brainer. I have literally had videos that I was playing on my phone pause because somebody said the trigger word and my phone's assistant came up. We know these things exist, half of the people in your office probably have the same problem, just cut the trigger out.

Decent details. I'm guessing you meant the fast charge is unique as PacTalks can be charged whilst in use too. I think I still prefer the PacTalk over this, what would Revzillas thoughts be.
So I had to listen to 8 minutes of listening to Spurge, to find the only difference between the two is an extra hour of talk-time? (The obvious jog dial doesn't count)
What is the best offering wireless / bluetooth offering for Harley-Davidson. The reviews on the H-D site for wireless with a half-helmet are terrible...I have the WHIM installed as I want/hope to use this with Apple CarPlay through the head unit and the wireless unit. I am just looking for CarPlay for solo riding with the ability to community with my passenger...not interested in bike-2-bike etc... Thanks.
So you're looking for a bluetooth helmet setup with short-range/bluetooth communication that'll pair to your motorcycles stereo? Just about every comms unit made since forever will do that. I have heard the Cardos have better speakers, but that's subjective. (Sena or Cardo both sound great to me) Grab something in your price range and you'll be alright. The only things the really expensive ones do is the mesh/long range stuff and you don't need that. Clear as mud?
The Spiders will have the same volume max as the 50S/50R units, however the 50S/50R units will be getting an upgraded speaker system to the Harman Kardon versions. Still the same max volume but better quality sound and EQ.
It's a great unit for music and voice controlled assistant, but if you use it as an intercom- look elsewhere, the wind noise is horrendous and Sena's suggestions to fix it (ie put a latex glove over the boom mic and tie it off) is ridiculous especially with a full face - if they know there's a problem since the 20S and the solution is a latex finger tip, should it not come in the package or fix this problem?
Have you tried moving the mic around or adding a bigger foam cover to it? I only ask because we've used Senas (specifically the 20S) for nearly all of our bike reviews and on-bike audio without issue. Usually we find it has more to do with your helmet's chin vent or air circulation than anything. Hope that helps! @@RevZilla Thanks for the advice! Just be cautious with this, most states actually have a law against having two headphones on while driving. Helmets get away with two as to the law, they are seen as "speakers" like in a car and don't lower the subsequent sound around you. Using the iPods though, make them no longer mounted in your helmet.
You need to have the volume maxed out on the phone and on the jog dial u need to turn it to increase the volume for the unit. Got mine yesterday and let me tell you it's plenty loud. Good bass. Clear and no buzzing
How the f... can they charge for a piece of plastic with 4 buttons, a battery, some headphones and a BT comm unit more than a smartphone which has all these and more? Cardo and Sena are thieves and no one should allow such business practices.
I'm laughing my ass off, at the children, having blind loyalty to inanimate objects & the people that make them. However, Cardo does need to move over to BT5 & USB-C fast charging. C has been the industry standard for years, after all. I mean we're on 5.2 as of now.

Not sure if they’ve upped their game now but lots of reviews for Sennas had complaints of water getting in and knackering them
@@Dave_D yeah, its not outside the realm of possibility... But I would think it's unlikely to be an issue from a known brand

Same here i have it for 4 years now and stil works really good
10 year old Sena SMH5 still works great

@Saad Alqarni my dad got my 20s as a present when I was born. He passed them down to me and they are still working...lol
"If you're more than a mile apart, you might be trying to lose someone anyway" lmfao love it
They're only like 3 years late to the mesh game. Also, $350 per unit? No thanks, I'll stick with Packtalk.
@5putput Sena is not Indian.
@5putput sena is korean company i think
The 30k has mesh
Got cardo bold and its lightyears ahead with Sena
ad78 same, love my packtalk bold
Packtalk slim is so far ahead of Sena, it's crazy to think anyone would buy sena.
@@justinwise4098 what kind of ear plugs are you using?
Honestly don't see a single reason to go with either of these vs. an offering from Cardo for half the price...a 2-pack from Packtalk or Freecom from Amazon is same price (or a bit over) as a single one of these... That's a no from me dawg.
Yyyyyup!
"lots of voices in your head, I've already got plenty" haha
Sorry Spooj. This was a sales pitch, not a review. After going from S20's to 50S's, I wish I'd gone back to Cardo for a PackTalk set.
So is this Sena trying to catch up to Cardo's mesh system?
lovelessissimo exactly.
Yes
I think the 30K was Sena trying to catch up to Cardo. That failed miserably. So next up...the 50 series!! 😂😂
I’m using 20S, and like the 10S, no music and intercom at the same time without audio dropouts. So, what I’m more interested in is better speaker 🔊 technology and less intercom frustration.
Get a cardo then
Got a dual Sena set as a birthday gift. I am shocked that they are not waterproof...why would you make a rider comms device that is not waterproof?
Very interested in head to head comparison of Sena and Cardo together
There are videos out there that do so . I myself have a Cardo and I love it . Easy to use especially when you download the app cardo has for it . I ride a lot and I honestly get around 10-12 hours out of a full charge . The audio is good enough , both with the music and the intercom . And you could buy separate JBL speakers for it . But overall I’m satisfied
Look up long way home TH-cam channel for comparison
Blake VanDamage yea that’s why I said you can buy separate JBL speakers
Is Sena still keeping up their waterproof-but-no-warranty bullshit with this one?
Pass , still not water/splash proof and noise/wind cancelation far superior on cardo , i will keep my Packtalk slim.
I’ll go with Cardo Pactalk Bold with JBL speakers and being water proof and also saving some money.
They are the exact same price on Revzilla? Sena usage is nicer but the water proof unit is still the difference
@@Axel_trouble I think Sena's are water resistant enough unless you like riding in a torrential downpour. Add to the fact that the 50R/S has USB-C, fast charging, BT 5.0 and open mesh put it above the Cardo.
@@Kingepticon i think people have their own taste and the difference is not that big at this price point too.
3 or more riders: Cardo Packtalk for premium features. 3 or less rider: Yideng BT-S2/S3 budget comm that works, upgrade headset speaker to a JBL standalone.
4:10 the borg LoL 😅
You should have Dan do all the headset reviews, he is a fountain of knowledge with com systems.
No mention of mics?
If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our Gear Geeks at 877.792.9455 or cs@revzilla.com. Ride safe, -Pat
@@RevZilla phone and unit maxed out. The left speaker on the first set was so bad that I tested it against the right one for frequency response and it was much worse at higher tones and inaudible. Second set was improved but not by much. Seems to be a QC issue. Other speakers tested fine.
Need noise reduction. Anything over 30 mph transmits noise from the passenger mic to the rider's headset if intercom is constant on.
The price is outrageous!
That's a hard "pass" for me.
How’s the wind noise with an open face helmet? The Cardo totally sucks even with mic sensitivity set on low.
This price is ridiculous! I'm still using my SMH10R
Same here! Just ordered a new dual pack for less than $200. Works perfectly fine for what we need 🤷🏻♀️
Five years on my SMH-10 now, I think.
I still haven't seen a real reason to upgrade yet.
but did they get rid of that popcorn sound when 3 people are connect?
Wondering when Sena will come out with a 50R or 50S equivalent that integrates with the Shoei Neotec 2?
I’m looking to use my own purple panda mic. Is there a way to connect your own mic?
I've never used the comms yet, yes my riding buddy hasn't actually ridden with me.. lol
@Blake VanDamage not with the 'mesh' tech your paying $$$ for.
@Blake VanDamage My complaint is products force you into a choice, that's all man.
Is the 50S compatible with the Harley Davidson WHIM Harley Davidson solution
Just bought the 50S today and you're wrong it is so quiet Compared to my cardo freecom 2X unlike the senna you can actually hear the music blaring while I still have the helmet on me
Man, back when I got my Cardo 2 or 3 years ago I figured maybe I should wait until Sena comes out with their next unit.
Good thing I pulled the trigger, years later and just now on par with Cardo if I am understanding all the features correctly. Are these water proof/resistant?
50S is "water resistant" and the 50R is supposed to be waterproof. I have ridden with my 50R in the rain with no issues if that helps.
Damn it spurg, when you said "hey Google" it paused my video and brought up my voice assistant.
Surprisingly I'm still using my Sena 3s from 4 years ago..
How is it? Any signs of battery deteriorating?
@@RiloElton still in great condition surprisingly for daily usage and touring for 5-6hours
@@syedismael2886 nice. It's decent battery then. How's the sound quality compared to earphones? I want to buy this instead of Sena 5S, felt like straight ripoff
But is the cardo better?
Cardo's are waterproof and warrantied for it, their noise cancellation is worlds better and so are the voice controls and audio quality.
Cardo's mesh has been out for several years and has had many software updates since release. It's going to be a while before Sena catches up.
Packtalk slim is still firmly the best.
Hey There- my current SRL can charge while riding but not talk. Does this version allow function while charging like the older models?

Still has a ton of bugs in their software, many of them carried over from their previous models. No thanks Sena. Your consistently crappy products have made me a Cardo man for life, which can easily be had for far less. Give these a hard pass.
Same here.
Why 50r & 50s? Jog wheel vs. Buttons, that's basically the only difference and a little less battery life. I'll stick with my uclear which my group of 4(can accommodate 6) works just fine.
Can you "mesh" Sena units with Cardo units?
Great question.
At this point, you can only mesh Sena units with applicable Sena units, they do not mesh across brands.

Lovely review 😍😍
Going Cardo on my next comm. Sena cost too much and the battery life / waterproofing is a joke.
With my cardo , I honestly get 10-12 hours on a full charge . It’s pretty nice .
(Sena or Cardo both sound great to me)
Grab something in your price range and you'll be alright. The only things the really expensive ones do is the mesh/long range stuff and you don't need that.
Clear as mud?
How do the speakers on the 50s/50r compare to the Spider series? I'm coming from a SMH-10 unit and would like a little more volume.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our Gear Geeks at 877.792.9455 or cs@revzilla.com. Ride safe, -Pat
@@RevZilla Thanks for the advice! I've actually tried everything from changing the microphone (boom, hybrid boom, wire) to putting a latex glove finger tip over the foam of the boom mic, putting the microphone behind the cheek pads-

does the sena mesh work with the cardo mesh networks or do they have to go with a blue tooth option
They're not cross-compatible except via bluetooth. Probably on purpose.
the 50s is not able to bridge universal intercom connections into the mesh. whereas the 30k is able to do this. i'm really disappointed w/ the 50s in this regard.
What’s the difference between the 50S and 50R?
Main difference is that the 50S has the jog dial while the 50R uses a slimmer 3-button main layout w/o the jog.
