- A Rare Frank Rosolino trombone track Quiet Nights from the In Denmark LP rec 30 Aug 1978 .This was the track that was omitted from the cd release,probably because of the 14 minutes length but well worth a listen and a cool ending too Thomas Clausen piano Bo Stief Bass Jarne Rostvold Drums
Frank sounds incredibly great on this recording.
Carl Fontana and I both agreed that Frank did not do that deed. I saw Frank at Donte's that night. It never came to light. Frank was the main man and Carl as well. Cannot say Watrous and Frank sounded alike. Frank approached the music from a different perspective than Watrous or Carl. All three and Kai as well as J.J. and Slide Hampton all great. All different. Frank is my favorite.

His mastery of playing stays alone from all trombonists back that time. Yet many new trombone players copy and follow his manner of playing. Fabulous musician ! I love his solos in record named "Body Heat" of Quincy Jones.

this is the master of the trombone at work.frank and carl fontana were the leaders of the pack closely followed by watrous an co.frank still had more to offer but sadly we know what happened.i think he remains the main influence of trombone players even today.many thanks.
No trombonist played like F.R. but his style influenced a century of trombone jazz performance. Carl and Watrous came after Frank. At time b4 I saw him live I thought it was a valve bone. And there was another Frank (rehack).
he has been at least a subliminal influence on every jazz trombonist since his day. I find that I have "picked up" much of his style, phrasing (if not his incredible technique!) kind of by osmosis...just listening and admiring him so much for so many, over 50, years. thanks so much for posting this.

I too disagree with the idea that there are similarities between the styles and sounds of Rosolino and Watrous.

This is a fabulous LP - but I'm a little taken back to hear Frank's style compared to Bill Watrous.
Both great players - but completely different styles and sounds.
I'm sorry but if you tell me that Carl and Frank have similar styles I'll say kinda of but in 2 or 3 seconds I'll tell you who it is, but to suggest Frank sounded similar to either of them or any bone player, well you must have board ears. Having played with 2 of theses 3 cats I'm mystified with some of the comments. In so far as Franks death, I'll leave that alone, but will say that at that time there were credible cats (I knew personally) that his wife's infidelity was the catalyst. Those in the circle know the story and ill leave let that tragedy alone. Rest In Peace Frank and I will focus and enjoy his magnificent musical legacy!
Truly masterful playing - similar in many ways to the style and sound of Bill Watrous.
How on earth could Rosolino have ended up killing himself and shooting his two sons, one of whom died and the other blinded... Tragic.
Frank was much more melodic in his improvisation than Watrous. Yes, different styles for sure.
More the other way around....
It's never been proven that he shot his sons or himself. There was no suicide let or hints by him that he planned doing anything. His wife had gassed herself with a car in the garage. I believe she delivered the shots, then gassed herself. As to sounding like Bill Watrous, please listen to more Rosolino and also Watrous. I see few similarities. Rather, I think Watrous and Karl Fontana were closer in their playing styles and solo structures. Frank was the Man!
What the H..l difference does it make? Just listen to them independently and appreciate it.
Complete nonsense. One of Frank's wife did kill herself. But that was years before Frank's death.....plus, there is zero evidence that he was murdered.
As much as his fans would like to believe he was incapable of doing what he did, he did indeed do it.
