  • Trevor Groom playing "live" on a 1976 recording of the Horovitz Euphonium concerto from a radio broadcast G.U.S Gloucester Cathedral conducted by Geoffrey Brand. This is not the best for sound quality but is of historical interest.unfortunately the cassette ran out of time during the 2nd movement but does continue when tape is turned over .This is a rare chance to hear this magnificent performance by my euphonuim hero Trevor Groom . I have to thank my late friend Roland Clark for recording this rare radio broadcast.Enjoy

Thank you for saving this lovely performance!
I think I heard the concerto, or parts of it, for the first time during a masterclass I attended (as a spectator) at the Lemmens Institute (Leuven, Belgium) in the early 1990s, was very impressed with the piece as well as the technical dexterity of the players at the time.

    Well.
I never was sure about this piece but like THIS I get it!

This performance is sharper and more brisk than the commercial recording by the same team conducted by Joseph Horovitz (Trevor was never satisfied by that commercial recording as the composer had turned up at the studio and Stanley Boddington - the GUS conductor who had fully 'bedded down' their interpretation - handed over the baton apparently without any rehearsal. The tempi and feel were therefore very different and, for Trevor, somewhat distracting and unsettling.) The superb legato playing and intricate passage-work by Trevor in this 1976 performance are truly in an expressive-technical class of their own - a true 'gold standard'. One final detail: the conductor, Geoffrey Brand, originally commissioned the concerto for the National Brass Band Festival of 1972.
