After 10 years of teaching kindergarten, I switched from a mixture of leveled readers and decodable texts to all decodables this year. I can't believe the difference it's made in my student's ability to accurately decode words and not simply guess based on the first sound, picture, etc. Thank you also for highlighting how running records can still be used to help determine a student's area of phonics strengths and needs. Although I no longer track student errors through MSV, like you mentioned in the video, I do my own running records to look for areas of phonics knowledge where students are strong and what they need to review or be taught next.

There are a set of decodable books that go with the weekly ELA curriculum. We use AR but I prefer Fountas and Pinnell levels.

Hey there! My decodable readers come with running records - th-cam.com/users/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqa1BOQXVIX0NGTk9XOUV0YjJ5bFU2dS1aTlU5d3xBQ3Jtc0ttTGtjdkItd1FzaE1JZzQwWmFKWUdBWVktZXYwRlFRNzc0OExObHRrMXZTTUItN0xNM2VJUnRWNVFJRXhXNUJqR0w4NmtHWUhhZ1FuNmFKUHZSYmd5SEE1YzRXUno5djQtTXBHWEZHbnBrUlZUeWxEcw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.teacherspayteachers.com%2FProduct%2FDecodable-Readers-Book-and-Passages-Formats-K-2-Mega-Bundle-SOR-aligned-6648790&v=KvGN9wLTe3I

I am doing mostly decodables and I could care less about "levels" but our district requires us to input levels monthly...

I think a lot of people can relate to this!! At least you're able to use decodables in your classroom.

In the comments, let me know if you are currently using only leveled texts, only decodable texts, or both?

I am using only using decodable for instruction. Hoewever, I am forced to use leveled readers for the running records. But the leveled readers skills do not match the phonics skills that the students have learned yet. Ex, Level A has magic E words, why? This is a first grade reading skill. Not a kindergarten skill, which is what level A is. This really throws off the student and decreases their confidence when they read a leveled text for running records.

I switched this year to mostly decodables. My district and school uses DRA and leveled books. I am still required to provide the district and families with a reading level.
