Excellent tips. I'm a mother my son is in first grade needing help reading fluently. Searching for tools to help him and I appreciate this video.
My son is in 2nd grade and he reads very slow. According to some test he took at school his at a kinder level. However, when he reads at home with me he reads level 2 books. He was homeschool with me 2 yrs so idk if he just doesn't do well with someone else, his wŕtting is behind too. Yet with me his more comfortable and does well. Ugh😮💨! He'll just shut down with everyone else

I don’t see your literature books behind you. I always look to see books you are emphasizing. Thank you for your quick but helpful informational videos.
I was filming in a different area of my office! My favorite fluency books (which I referenced for this video) include: Reading Fluency by Jan Hasbrouck, Developing Fluent Readers by Melanie Kuhn and Lorell Levy, and The Megabook of Fluency by Timothy Rasinski (this last one is mostly a bunch of activities you can use with your students!)

When will your literacy club and writing club be open?
What do you do with the students that are with you?
Is it ok to ask them what they understand from what they read when teaching them fluency the way you suggested.
It's always a great idea to ask students what they've learned, yes! I would have them repeat the text orally a few times first for fluency practice and then see if they understood. Comprehension is always our end goal!
I want to be a reading specialist...do you know an online course that you could suggest i do....i would want one that will provide me with a valid certificate that is recognized....it has been my passion for a while now. I am already a teacher and for some reason i always get remedial students...i really get satisfaction out of seeing them leave being able to read. By the way i love your videos.
Hi Laura! Thank you so much and that is wonderful to hear! I don't know of a fully online course you could do to become a reading specialist as I think the requirements vary state-by-state. Here in MA you need to already be a teacher, have a valid license, take the the correct courses, and have an in-person practicum under a licensed reading specialist to earn your license. I would definitely ask around locally and see what the requirements are! That being said, if you're looking for more information about structured literacy and to up your credentials, I highly recommend the IMSE Orton Gillingham+ virtual course. It is 30 hours and most states (MA does!) will allow you to earn PDP credits for the course. It was great and you could use the knowledge and credentials to tutor while you work on your specialist license.
