*Oh, hello. In case my rambling and Prof's...questions were a bit confusing*
Magnetite is the most magnetic of all the naturally occurring minerals on Earth. It is everywhere, and forms from the cooling of lava, asteroid impacts, etc. "Lodestone" is the strongly magnetized version of magnetite, and was humanity's first contact with magnetism (it was used for our first compasses, hence "lode" or "leading" stone). The leading theory...ugh...is that lodestone is a result of lightning strikes. BUT WHY PROF? WHY? Because the intense heat can make the atoms in the mineral moveable again, and the intense electric field creates a magnetic field to which the electron spins in those atoms align.
This is the exact process we use to make all the magnets you're familiar with. We find suitable minerals, powderize them, shape them with heat in a mold, and then heat them up again to a certain temperature (the Curie Temperature). Right then, we zap them with an INTENSE magnetic field generated by a giant spike of electricity. This aligns the magnet, and when it cools down, the alignment is maintained. Almost every magnet you've ever seen is man-made.
So yes, the Earth's only natural magnet may be made by lightning, but other minerals are magnetic and not magnetized in this way, and man-made magnets use manageable electricity.

I loved seeing Kyle's self confidence and sanity deteriorate at an alarming rate... The Prof is like radiation.
The Prof wore him down one Lighting strikes Rock comment at a time. By the end Kyle was a defeated man.
Can we get a shoutout to the editors and the production team on this. Of course Prof and Kyle kill it but everything else about this vid just goes above and beyond

I love how this kind of looks like a modern cientist trying to explain to a wizard how magnets actially work and the wizard going "we've been striking things with lightning all the time and sometimes they work".

Kyle said that not everything comes from lightning, but some theorize that volcanic lightning may have sparked the first proteins that created life, so that's another point for lightning magic.

This is one of the best TH-cam videos I've seen in awhile and i would absolutley watch the hell out of a kyle and prof science show. I learned and laughed at the same time. Well done! 👏
I feel like Kyle Hill was not warned that he would be having a co-host for this episode. I don't think we're now ever going to see him on an episode of Sesame Street explaining science to the muppets.
Looking at this episode, I honestly don't think Kyle would be able to talk science at kindergarten level. He may be very knowledgeable, but he's not very good at dumbing things down.

As someone with a degree in creative writing, with plenty of friends who are either engineers or physicists, this is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining videos I have ever seen on youtube, and doing this myself to my friends extends my lifespan, to the detriment of theirs.
This video was absolutely amazing, and it was pretty enlightening as to how magnets actually work, I hope to see more in the future

This has to be the most enlighting (get it?) and funniest video I've have ever seen! Seeing Kyle lose his marbles and Prof obsessively talk about lightning = stuff was amazing!

FYI: I would like to add, as a physicist, that lightning rods are probably (we don't strike rods with lightning where I study, so it's an educated guess) NOT magnetic and so paper clips won't stick to it. The purpose of a lightning rod is for it to "stuck to ground" or be "grounded", however you wanna call it, which means it's 'surface charge' is 'sent' to the ground. So, with no surface charge, there's no associated electromagnetic field that can be felt or interacted with by the clip after the lightning hits it, so no electromagnetic field = no magnetism felt by the clip. But being fair to the prof, in an instant, like nanosecond, in which the lightning hits the rod, it may be magnetic and attract the paper, but only for a nanosecond! Before the charge is taken to ground, so maybe the prof was also correct, but please don't stand near a lightning rod with a paper clip to test this...
This was delightful. I've often been The Prof in these situations, so it was fun to see exactly the kind of harm I'm causing to my loved ones with my shenanigans 😂
